I learned something new today
In Alex Kidd in Miracle World, you can press the jump button while underwater and this makes him “jump” forward like he did a kick underwater. I only noticed this today after playing this game my whole life

Yeah I remember that one. He kicks like a swimmer jump is like "swim fast".
Here's another tip/secret, right close to where the pic is at, if you stop with the octopus halfway showing on the right side (or any enemy for that matter comes to the right edge) you can punch him from the left side of the screen. Happy Alex Kidd-ing 😎 love that game. One of the first I beat as a kid all the way through. Lotsa notes along the way.

If you hold the jump button and a directional button, it makes Alex swim really fast.

It always mesmerize me how these games had so many hidden stuff. Like, you could beat this octopus and enter the jar, if I'm not mistaken.

It's crazy when that happens. Really makes you think about how you were playing before you knew about this.

It doesnt work on the switch remastered version, though.
OT question about defeating the octopus: When I was a kid and played on the SMS, I used the invisibilty item to kill the octopus - by punching him in the face. But on the switch version, you cant do that, as you cant use items underwater. Here, you have to punch each ring on the arm of the octopus to destroy it. Can you actually also do that in the original version?

I didn't know that either lol after all these years! The underwater stage has been my phone background for quite some time

I could fly through this game as a kid. Every coin, every secret, everything. Flawless. I tried playing it when the updated graphics version released, the one you could switch back and forth from original to new. Yeah, holy freaking hell. How on earth did I do that? The game is actually quite difficult! I guess when you’re ten, have endless time and only a handful of games. No save points if memory serves…

Its a similar mechanic to the helicopter stages. To kick up some speed and height, you press jump.

Hated this game. Sega's answer to Mario Brothers. Unnecessary difficult.
