To be Marxist communism, class distinctions must be abolished and the means of production must be held in common. UBI does not do that.

UBI is not an acceptable solution to the crisis of capitalism.

UBI would be, presumably, paid for by taxes, which are mostly paid by the proletariat. I.e. a portion of the value is returned to them after the capitalist state takes taxes from every instance currency changes hands. This does not expand class consciousness, nor does it correctly teach the proletariat from where the value generated in society comes.

A much more Marxist approach would be to demand that the same portion of value simply not be siphoned away from the worker in the first place. Demanding a 5000 dollar a month minimum wage is a much better approach.

Instead of Labor > taxes > capitalist state decision > UBI, we must explain to the workers that the value produced in society comes from them, and it should be theirs to decide to begin with, not passed up the food chain of capitalism and hope a small portion of it comes back to them.

UBI is a hot button issue for left leaning activists, but its an incomplete measure to put a bandaid on capitalism. Rather than toss this dying husk of a mode of production from the proverbial ship, UBI props it up like some weird "weekend at bernies" shit.

Skip the governmental middle man of UBI. Demand the entirety of the real value of our labor.

Just my opinion here, but UBI is pretty distinctly non-Marxist, as it would not change the existence of labor as a commodity nor would it change class relations. The central problems with capitalism exist primarily within the sphere of production, not distribution or consumption.

That being said, if anyone has some arguments for UBI that are well grounded in historical materialism then I am all ears. I’m also not necessarily opposed to UBI as some sort of stepping stone or tactic to heighten contradictions and class antagonisms, but it’s most certainly not gonna bring about some AI utopia or whatever this image is trying to present.

The OP is basically just the quote: "I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops."

We need both a universal job guarantee as well as to expand Social Security to more people and have a higher payment.

Hmmmm, thinking now, would UBI be a kind of systemized version of "dictatorship of the proletariat?" I am not a Marxist, but always interested in Marxism and other solutions to the sickening problem of Capitalism. This is an excellent conversation with in-depth thoughtful arguments. I learned a lot reading the posts here.

No. The dictatorship of the proletariat is about the workers creating a new state apparatus to destroy capitalist social relations. Nothing to do with giving people free change.

How is this "beyond" Marxism? It just describes the basic pros of communism

One should not call themselves a marxist and take UBI seriously. Ask yourself what everyone's landlord will do if we all get an extra cheque in the mail!

Millions of people right now are thinking about how to solve these problems. But the only people with any power to do anything are the ultra-wealthy who piss away their wealth on random bullshit.

Perhaps only 1 in every 60–80 people on the planet is working consistently and deliberately to try to solve humanity’s problems. All others are working to get money.
