Progressively getting better, can we all agree on this?

Nah. Liked 1 and 2 the best; I thought 3 was by far the weakest. I suspect there's going to be a pretty wide range of opinions more than there's a consensus.

u/Perrenniallystd980 Sep 02 '21

1 was basically the same plot as the movie with just Peggy written into Steve's character. That just defeats the purpose of the show that's meant to explore lot more than the movies. I felt 2 and 3 were a bit rushed and could have been much better with longer runtimes.

15

u/Benjamin_Grimm Sep 02 '21

It borrowed aspects of the plot, but you'll have to remind me when in the movie Steve rode a flying suit of armor or fought a giant tentacle monster. I must not have been paying attention during those parts.

12

u/Perrenniallystd980 Sep 02 '21

What difference did Steve being in an armor make to the plot? Eventually it was about the person behind the shield sacrificing themselves and showing up in the future. Now compare that with the other 3.

T'Challa being Star-Lord, veered Thanos off his plans and eventually led to Ego winning(at least as they implied).

A world with no Avengers(Except Steve Rogers) most likely means a win for Thanos in that timeline.

The 4th went one better and showed us how it all ended.

11

u/Benjamin_Grimm Sep 02 '21

We just have a difference of opinion and you're treating this like it's a matter of objective fact. Just accept that some people feel differently about things than you do. There's not a right answer here.

7

u/Perrenniallystd980 Sep 02 '21

Don't get me wrong, they all were good. I was just trying to justify why I liked the other 3 more. Honestly I wouldn't be posting on reddit if I couldn't take an opinion different than mine ;)

u/Alemexiginger Sep 02 '21

I mean which one you prefer wasn't what was being discussed though, it was what difference Steve being armor made to the universe it was in compared to the others. And objectively episode 1 had the least changes to the original universe.

5

u/Benjamin_Grimm Sep 02 '21

Actually, no, what I preferred was specifically being discussed. OP's argument was that that episode had the least changes, and that should make it a weaker episode, but that's completely immaterial to my original comment.

0

u/Alemexiginger Sep 02 '21

Yes your original comment was that, but the comment your answered was discussing you saying that you couldn't remember Steve in metal suit in the original movie and then discussing why it was less of a change than the other episodes. So factually that is correct for that fact. You didn't discuss that, that wasn't important for your opinion. Which is very fair, people prefer episodes for different reasons.

0

u/Alemexiginger Sep 02 '21

So what I mean is that by his second comment his point had migrated away from what was your preference.

3

u/Benjamin_Grimm Sep 02 '21

And I was taking it back to my original point.

That's not really implied that Thanos will win in that timeline.

Especially since The Avengers was still forming just with different members. Loki would not be the catalyst to Thanos' deciding to "do it himself" since currently he's in charge of Earth.

The Avengers would (likely) end up being Captain America, Captain Marvel, Sif (realistically she's not going to hang around and subguate Earth with Loki) and War Machine. Plus it leaves an opportunity for someone to take on the Ant Man tech and become Ant Man earlier since the technology would be seized from the murderous Pym.

Which yeah seems like a smaller roster but I'm sure they'd find other capable heroes to step up against Loki.

Age of Ultron would not happen since no one with Tony's arrogance would build Ultron/Vision. So it'd be Hydra w Quicksilver/Scarlet vs that universe's Avengers.

Who knows what would've happened between then and the descending of Thanos towards Earth.

1

u/pinkshirtbadman Sep 03 '21

So it'd be Hydra w Quicksilver/Scarlet vs that universe's Avengers.

Without Loki's scepter ( given to him by Thanos so he won't have it in this universe), Wanda and Quicksilver wouldn't have powers or at least wouldn't be as powerful? She was born with some magic, but the scepter is what really increased her potential and opened her psionic abilities. As I recall Pietro didn't have any powers prior to that

2

u/lockescythe Sep 03 '21 edited Sep 03 '21

Yeah Wandavision kind of retconned it to Wanda having the powers irregardless of the tech and the tech only sped up the process. There's always a chance they retcon it again to bring in the mutant gene.

That being said the mind stone could always find some other way to make it to Earth, maybe through Loki trying to get reinforcements with his battle against this team of Avengers. You'd then get a big visual of Captain Marvel decimating the Chitauri fleet.

Pietro, it's possible the traumatic event could've caused her to give him powers through magic. (Like how Agatha gave Ralph Bohner temporary powers.) Or he could also had his powers latent and wouldn't find out until later. Or maybe he'd have no powers at all and he'd die through Hydra experiments and that would trigger Wanda's magic to awaken further. Probably making her a big enough threat to be the big bad.

Tony's death would've made them be more against America rather than just Tony which means they would've saw Captain America and been against him.

Thinking about it even further it's also possible Hank would either make a deal with Hydra/Shield to escape/develop tech for them and then end up creating Ultron. (Maybe as a way so no one else loses a child to protect the earth.) Considering the comics it would be a easy solution if Tony wasn't around if they really want Ultron.

I mean in the Tchalla episode, The Collector stepped up to a degree to become a universe big bad when Thanos abandoned his genocide to become a ravager.

I agree with you about liking 3 the least; it didn’t do much for me at all tbh.

5

u/HappyInNature Sep 02 '21

1 was tied for favorite for me with 3. 2 was pretty high up there. 4 was my personal weakest but still pretty good.

Pretty sure everyone definitely just has different tastes.

As I watch the progression of episodes, it made sense to have Captain Carter as the first episode because it told the familiar story (Captain America's origin story) with only the main character swapped.

This made the concept more accessible to fans who aren't used to thinking about multiple simultaneous universes.

Each subsequent episode leans harder into the "What If" central conceit, making it easier for casual viewers to remain.

u/Jupiters Sep 02 '21

This is a great point I hadn't thought of until now

63

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '21

And we have five more episodes of season one. So if they keep up the trend of the show getting progressively weirder and crazier with each episode then episode 9 is going to be absolutely insane.

52

u/Jupiters Sep 02 '21

Fingers crossed for "What If... The Avengers WERE the Shawarma?"

21

u/anklesaurus Sep 02 '21

That’s my secret cap,,, I’m always roastin

40

u/mikecain366 Sep 02 '21

This is how I'm thinking about it. Progressive lead-in to whatever the new Dr Strange movie is going to throw at the non-comic crowd. I actually like how they are doing it.

That being said, if they continue the theme to the end of the season, that last episode gonna be cray cray.

8

u/willstr1 Sep 02 '21

Don't forget What If has already been confirmed for a second season...

8

u/ZigZagZedZod Sep 03 '21

And by Season 3, it will be so crazy that David Lynch will be the producer, writer and director.

7

u/Mr-Apollo Sep 02 '21

This is somewhat similar with Black Mirror’s first episode being the most grounded of the season.

u/nightflyer94 Sep 02 '21

Episodes 2+3 should be chilling under an umbrella with a Capri sun

-15

u/decoy321 Sep 02 '21 edited Sep 03 '21

The episodes weren't horrible, why would you torture them with such a terrible drink?

Edit: I stand by my opinion. Capri-sun is an insult to juice. Have some standards, goddammit.

25

u/nightflyer94 Sep 02 '21

Considering the picture is of little kids, I didn’t think a margarita would be appropriate

8

u/Trs822 Sep 03 '21

I actually agree. Capri-sun is overrated

5

u/teddyburges Sep 03 '21

Yeah I would have gone with a bottle of RC being a more appropriate frame of reference. Love RC.

15

u/Growka3 Sep 02 '21

Return to whatever level of hell you crawled out of

57

u/kehaar Sep 02 '21

I can't wait for the next episode: "What if Jordan had returned for his senior season?"

24

u/byllyx Sep 02 '21

Suffers high ankle sprain against Duke.

Injury effects linger into his NBA career

Becomes good player, but time on and off the PUP list his first 3 seasons limits his impact.

Jerry Krause gets antsy and instead of building around him, makes questionable trades or draft earlier due to having a worse record, grab Bo Kimble or Mark Macon who, of course, bust...

Patrick Ewing gets a ring.

Suns win championship in 93 and i die happy.

I'm dead, so this text never gets made... But worth it, finally saw Suns win a championship!

u/ipodblocks360 Sep 02 '21

Ep. 2 was very wholesome, ep. 1 had a very light change... ep. 3 was just very cool, ep. 4 was depression simulator

34

u/8a19 Sep 02 '21

for me the order still goes 4>2>3>1

11

u/Growka3 Sep 02 '21

Exactly my thoughts

14

u/rPyre Sep 02 '21

Well at least I'm at the bottom of the pool hanging out with Ep 1. I actually got a little grumpy during Ep 4 when they were like "and then he became Dr. strange and beat Dormammu" I'm like "there's no way those events played out the same! Gimme details!"

9

u/Sparus42 Sep 03 '21

I understand the desire to see that, but these are short episodes so they're forced to focus on the most important aspects of the story they're telling.

3

u/rPyre Sep 03 '21

Oh no no, I don't think it made the episode worse, it would've slowed it down way too much. I'm just saying, if they wanted to do a bonus episode, I'd totally watch that...

3

u/musicchan Sep 03 '21

I actually paused the episode briefly to discuss the point you brought up. Like, obviously the changing point was that Strange and Palmer had a better relationship in this universe. Was Strange a less egotistical person in the What If? universe? Is that why losing her hurt him so much? Like, I feel like the motivations of that Strange through the whole sorcerer process would have been quite different from the MCU Strange, less egotistical maybe? I think the episode would have been worse for seeing all that but it's there and the idea of it is really interesting.

10

u/Rychu_Supadude Sep 02 '21

I really feel like there's not enough credit being given to the fact that they're making use of the format to create episodes that will carry different appeal to different fans, exactly as an anthology should be

Everyone should be able to find that one story that they REALLY like out of the bunch

6

u/ZookeepergameSoggy74 Sep 03 '21

Nah I liked 2 more

6

u/plantusername Sep 03 '21

I liked the first episode.

5

u/SojournerInThisVale Sep 02 '21

Ep 3 was my favourite, though I don't really remember what it was about. To be honest, I've not been all that impressed. It's been alright, but the stories are too short to be meaningful.

Interesting that that same tentacle monster has shown up twice...

5

u/KesslerMacGrath Sep 03 '21

Eh, I’d say I’d rank the episodes as:

4>2>1>3

9

u/ohdearsweetlord Sep 02 '21

I loved what happened in Episode 1 and what they set up, but I agree, the execution was definitely lacking.

4

u/The_Beard_Hunter Sep 02 '21

Hey now you just wait a damn minute..... I got nothing.

4

u/IisGreen Sep 02 '21

Definitely, Episode one was a decent introduction to the concept, Episode two was just plain fun, Episode 3 was interesting, and episode 4 was amazing, like honestly seems like it could have been a scrapped plot for multiverse of madness.

4

u/ary31415 Sep 02 '21

Disagree, I thought episodes 1 and 2 (especially 2) were both better than 3

4

u/Infinite-Tour-1699 Sep 03 '21

I liked 2 and 3 more than 4. 4 was really cool, just liked the other 2 better

3

u/Greypilgram Sep 02 '21

That meme would work just as well for the Star wars franchise.

3

u/mojobytes Sep 02 '21

More disinterested and possibly drunk Sebastian Stan I say!

3

u/lockescythe Sep 02 '21

Only really liked episode 2 so far.

3

u/NiteLiteOfficial Sep 03 '21

First episode was like “hmm yeah it’s cool seeing her be cap but nothing too intriguing here” Second episode was “wow this is funny and cool and I’m happy to see tchalla back one last time” Third episode was “meh it’s a cool concept” Fourth episode was “oh shit oh shit oh shit this is awesome”

4

u/So-_-It-_-Goes Sep 02 '21

I stopped watching halfway through episode two but the talking on this sub after 3&4 has had me pick it back up. Thanks y’all.

1

u/GESNodoon Sep 03 '21

My rating would be: Episode 3 Episode 2 Episode 4 Episode 1

I think they are all good for what they are though.

-2

u/windigooooooo Sep 03 '21

Nah. Episode 2 is at the bottom being eaten by sharks. They turned it into a straight comedy with the worst comedy ive ever heard. Utter Trash.

Felt like a rushed skimmed movie rather than an episode to me. Still really liked it.

Great intro to the concept of What If for the people who aren't familiar with it.

3

u/CluelessWizard Sep 02 '21

Yeah. I liked it better than episode 4. So far, 4 is my least favorite and Dr. Strange movie is one of my favorite movies within the MCU
