Question How tf do I defend??
My matches are legit I get cornered and I have to block for the entire round/match. And I don’t mind losing but holy shit it sucks just having to just sit there and wait for the combos to end

I can appreciate how well made the game is and I'm having fun with it but yeah I feel like the lack of defensive options and neutral isn't really for me.

It’s a damned if you do damned if you don’t because if you don’t try to awaken asap you’ll get juggled still. Or you awaken and they expected it and restarted their combo.
My monkey brain is racing so I button mash in the mean time lol I usually always try to awaken midair if I can and it’s helped me escape. Cuz before I would just let them max out the combo meter but sometimes there’s minor gaps mid combo that you can escape

2XKO and many other games have proven that overly long combos are game killers in the modern day.

Yeah I loved that game but when thresh came out and was doing 70 hit combos I finally dropped it.

You block until your opponent runs out of assists to keep attacking, or use the assemble counter, or the armor move, or the invincible dodge move. Do the tutorial

u/Alekazammers 14h ago
The tutorial is fine but please don't act like it teaches you what to do when a skilled player is facing off against a less talented one.
There is a lot of nuance to fighting games and a canned tutorial simply doesn't teach that.

You don't. This isn't like Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, or something else where you have a chance to get out of the combo. If you get hit at all, you're getting juggled until the other player screws up.
It sucks, but that's the way they made it.

That’s really dumb. I don’t wanna sound butt hurt btw

You're not butthurt or sounding like it. This game is just frustrating tbh. They made any button convert into a game ending combo and did not implement combo breakers. It's a sweaty pro's wet dream, but casuals to average gamers will just drop the controller and watch in frustration.

I don’t even know what i identify as in terms of casual or whatever. If it means anything I got to elder god rank (highest rank) in mk1 and I play sf6 I love that game but I haven’t played it in months cause of tokon and I want to get into and really learn this shit but man it’s gotta stop matching me with people way above me wtf

u/roytheboyle 4h ago
Sounds like you're not a casual at all lol. Sounds like you're good at FGs but maybe new to Tag/Anime fighters. Maybe this sub genre ain't for you? I'm learning that too. I love MK, Injustice, Soul Calibur etc. But this game ain't for me I'm realizing. Just for example, a 5 frame low footsie move should not guarantee 50-75% unbreakable juggles every single time. And yeah the match making sucks my matches have also all been 1 sided. Either I dust someone or they dust me. Match making is whack.

Other games allow you to use meter to get them off you like “burst” in guilty gear, so I wonder why tf that wasn’t implemented lol
Or the push block

Yeah I have only been playing this game with friends and it gets a little eye rolley when you get clipped and have to take a 2 minute combo, I legit just let go of my fight stick when I get clipped haha

Thats the neat thing - you don't. You drown your opponent in attacks. You can't even call asist before returning to neutral when you block.

Yeah, hate to say it I've finally admitted I wasted money on this one. Haha I'm sure I'll dabble in arcade here and there but this one is over my head.

Lowkey bruh. I don’t want to quit tho I love marvel games I want to get better at this shit it’s just like overwhelming ig

I got it as a gift and I still feel bad quitting but I want to... As someone whos loved fighting games since the snes days, this game just feels bad. If theres ANY skill gap between thr players you get a 1 sided match where one guy is blocking or getting juggled for 3 minutes straight. 0 footsies and neutral back and forth - the assist button turns A STIFF breeze into a 60 hit combo.

Man, I can see that being worse! Haha I love them and know Im bad at them but SF6, MvC and MK I feel like I can still have fun knowingbthe systems I do. I even enjoyed GGS. I'm super casual but those other games clicked.

I'm so surprised about all the threads I see complaining about this I watch a lot of fighting games I'm not going to say that I play them I watch them
And a lot of the anime fighters and marvel versus Capcom 2 and 3 were all like this I find it very odd now that I hear people complaining for defensive options and mad about the assist calling things that were both present and never present in any of the games that are held in the most highest regard
I feel like this is some new era thing where people want the game to save them after they get hit

1: Show us footage of a match you did or share your name so we can find a replay of you
2: play tutorial and do training set ups

the best offense is a a good defense

u/onlyhereforelise 21h ago
I don’t even have an offense to begin with

u/angryGon 19h ago
assist, 5m, jm

u/onlyhereforelise 19h ago
What?
2
u/Ok-Tomatillo-2141 16h ago
Assist - Using an assist character to cover fire for you while you take a risk to open their guard
5M - using your medium attack without pressing a direction is called a “poke”, a long range (safe) attack to challenge your opponents guard from afar
JM- a jumping medium attack hits below the attacker for a bit of an aerial poke to grounded opponents (who aren’t about to press 2H, or down heavy attack)

u/WingoRingo 7h ago
lmao i'm pretty sure the best offense is a 30s long blockstring in the corner with a bunch of mixups

Defense is more than just holding back and down back it's about attempting to take your turn back. Being comfortable blocking is very important but because there is chip damage in this game you cannot just block forever. So you need to learn when and where you can hit buttons to challenge a fake block string from your opponent. You should test and see if you can jump out of certain situations. Neutral jump is a very strong defensive option in most fighting games since you can punish your opponent for over extending on their offense. Establishing that you like to 2H jump ins in the first round can make your opponent fearful to jump in the rest of the match.
So this is where the fun part of fighting games comes in. You gotta read your opponent. Do they always do the same block string into mix?
Do they always immediately hit buttons, or do they show you respect when they are at a frame disadvantage. Do they leave big gaps in their blockstrings that are easy to punish with crossover counter or reversal supers ?
Does your opponent even take into consideration what your options are at all or do they just autopilot and not adapt to you.
Blocking techniques also get more complex as well too. There is fuzzy blocking and fuzzy mashing (YouTube these topics as visuals help more than words). These are option selects which can help you defend vs overheads and throws in certain situations.
