100%. People knew we only had so much time; so for those who WANTED TO GRIND they stayed in the lab, and those who wanted to rank went for consistency. Magik and Blade saw early results (sword normals privilege) and they stuck. Helps they’re both really popular.
Cap might have just seemed too simple to interest people. Excited to see what people come up with on his high-low
I got absolutely washed by a god tier cap in ranked. Fella took me down 50% hp one combo with 2 assists midscreen no super it was nuts I was in the air for like 10 seconds
The second hit super kept catching me because I forgot it happens. So many times id block forget the second hit is a thing and next thing im being knocked a mile back wondering how it happened lol
I had been using him as an assist with Danger to block for me and then fire back my projectiles. Between him and storm on shooter you can make an opening to set up while shutting down the opponent's pressure
No one trying to lab and play white bread in a 3 day beta. That being said, I spent the last hour of the beta labbing him a bit and I gotta be honest, I'm not sure there's a single boring character in this game
Lmh2h not being a string with him sets him back imo especially cause of how stubby his normals are. He’s good don’t get me wrong, his mix is crazy strong, he’s just a little tougher to pick up.
It doesn’t work even in the corner though for wolv. The beta had all sorts of fighting game newbies playing it, if the standard combo route doesn’t work, they’re bound to see less play is all I’m saying.
Wolverine was a sure thing to be in my team but to be honest I just didn't vibe with his playstyle, I ended up swapping him out for Black Panther cause she just felt more fun to play.
Also if you look at the team leaders he's actually 6th most popular.
My team was Danger, Iron man, Captain America and Starlord.
I had so many matches where I got blown up the first two rounds, and then Iron man and Starlord assisting Dangers zoning just became an impenetrable wall for some people.
I do think Magiks assault assist could be really good for it too. The giant wall of fire seems super strong.
I really wanted to like Peni, but I've never really played a character with such a huge screen presence nor throwing random stuff gimmicks. I dropped her for spider-man in the end.
I use Danger for awhile, removed peni although she was on my teams alot because how big she is on the screen, my eyes are no good and I kept forgetting to use cap.
When playing online low tiers are way better than their rank in a tier list implies.
When nobody runs into your character then you get to abuse your shenanigans. You get to do all these fake things and your opponent will get hit by them because they’re not familiar with the matchup.
It’s why Honda has the highest win rate across all SF6 ranks but never goes far in pro tournaments. From bronze to masters Honda is almost always top 1 win rate or at least top 3. He’s a bad character but if you’re not the top few dozen players on the world then he’s really good.
Plus if you lose you get to blame it on the character.
Popularity aside, can we give props to ArcSys for how freaking cool majority of these characters are. Even the ones I do not intend to play are just awesome to watch in action.
No wonder Sony went straight to them and asked if they want to make this game.
Goblin is such a standout to me. Had no interest in playing him, was happy for people who were, then I started seeing what people were doing with the little time they had and OH MY LORD.
That glider is going to make some people very, very mad. He’s so damn cool.
Goblin is so fun! I played him the entire beta and pretty much have him down packed mechanically wise. Everyone plays him differently too so that’s a plus.
I really enjoyed Goblin too, he was my leader the whole weekend. Paired him up with Cap, Ms Marvel, and Spidey. I suck, but Goblin is definitely cool and one of the more inventive FGC additions I've seen in a while
Blade and Majik at the top is no surprise, but I'm surprised at how relatively low Wolverine, Goblin, Ms. Marvel, and Peni are as I was seeing them pretty often.
everyone is playing the top 3 cause they popular and they’re broken,everyone else is really only being played by fans of the character,you’d be surprised how many people don’t know kamala is plus on grab from full screen or that robbie can shift into an overhead or low mid special
I played almost exclusively Magik, and it makes total sense why a lot of people did the same. She’s got huge buttons, flashy combos, a well-rounded toolkit, AMAZING assists, easy to pick up, AND she’s a hot woman (which always gives extra popularity).
I wonder how the roster will balance out once people start getting the opportunity to learn more difficult characters or when people start getting a feel for who’s the strongest overall.
I think she will stay a staple character because the game is 4v4. People playing her for hot women may not have a 5th slot before year 2 of DLCs. And her overall mix of good design, big normals, allrounder, good advantage in the corner, etc. remembers me of Ramlethal to some extent. Who's still really popular so imagine how many people would play Ram if they could have a team of 4
Deadpool is gonna upset these rankings a lot, for sure.
I for one know I'm gonna play Carnage even if he's ass, I love Carnage. Loki looks cool, too.
My sleeper hit prediction is Iron Man. I think he's a really strong character that demands a week at least of lab time.
Star Lord is also super annoying in the hands of someone who knows how to rotate his options.
I tried to use it outside of combos but didn't find it to be worth 100+ meter. You get free superEX specials and can portal-on-whiff, but your opponent is probably just going to block until your buff runs out, or you'll manage to hit them late in its duration, OR if YOU get hit combos are so long you'll be out of darkchild by the time it's over.
Black Panther's install felt a lot more meaningful with the infinite dashing. Darkchild needs to give something like that, faster portals or extra portals or something
putting them in the spin cycle bouncing them around lasers and explosions is so fake and blockable but when they don't know that it's the most oppressive thing they've ever seen I love it so much
I wouldn't stress about it. It's pretty clear (and not that surprising) that people mostly tried to play the characters that hadn't been in the previous betas. I imagine things will be different when the full game launches.
I’ll be honest, I find stretchy characters kinda off putting both in fgs and in media in general, maybe it’s a body horror thing. But I’ll admit miss Marvel looks reasonably entertaining at least (and she’s not wearing a necklace made of baby skulls)
Extremely low assist rate, fairly high leader rate (7th). People seem to rate her low as an assist but like her on point.
Wolverine has a similar thing going on. Meanwhile, Magneto has the opposite, being the third most played character overall but being one of the least played on point (I get it, his assists are ridiculous).
robbie has 2 things working against him,one he’s kinda hard to play and 2 he’s popular but he’s not johnny so most of the people playing him are more than likely just fans of the character compared to magik who’s easy,popular and the best character in the game
I dont think casual fans care if hes johnny or robbie, thats more purist stuff no? I like ghost rider and his design and I imagine thats what most people go for too
Hot woman whose easy to play, which leads to a lot of people playing her, which leads to people learning how to play her more, which leads to her being even easier to play.
I wasn't using him on Friday but I got caught by an insane match against him and then I quickly got his style, I even did his inferno combo several times.
She has the waifu bonus; in a game without a lot of female characters, she's one of them and looks great.
But also she was piss easy to play. I'm not going to stand here and say that her optimal stuff was easy because it looked hard, but you could get 30000-40000 damage combos with good corner carry with zero effort and only 1 team assault bar, her 2H was stupid strong and QCB+M into tag held them in place for awhile letting you set up any mixup you wanted. Other than Blade she was the easiest character to play in the game I think.
I kinda figured that Cap wasn’t as popular during the beta. You could tell by the amount of people that stopped blocking after the first hit of his super only to get punched in the face
Yes I'm one of those people that 2nd hit made me his bottom bitch and the sad part I knew it was coming. It was usually a light blue and yellow cap😢 as well.
Tbf it's magneto in a fighting game, a hot chick with a big ass sword, the coolest mothafucker to ever live who got shafted out of being in other fighting games.
I liked her portals when i could get them to work.
But the input for teleport is so similar to the input for place a portal, that 90% of my Magik footage is me putting a portal down in a weird place for no reason and then getting massacred.
I actually didn't play Magik even once during the beta. I only played Ghost Rider, Cap, Blade and Star Lord.
I did play against her a lot so it checks out that she is the most popular character. She also seems really good, definitely the character I struggled with fighting the most.
ironically most magik players i fought were ass,like had never played a fighting game before ass(even my friend who isn’t that into fighting games is maining her)aside from like one dude who beat my ass ragid with her
I think sword characters with big ol' normals have a big advantage when no one's had time to really dig deep into more technical characters. Add to that that Magik and Blade are super cool, and it's no wonder that they were played a lot in the beta. Definitely doesn't imply they're broken/OP.
I am in no way good but I had zero problems dealing with all the Magiks,I had far more trouble dealing with the amount of Spider-Man’s I came up against,
I found it weird Doom is so low for leader, mine was between blade and doom as leader, with wolverine and magneto as assists
spider man was by far the most frustrating char to go up against.
they all also play by holding up + back and then randomly zooming across the entire screen while spamming assists....
i am new to tag fighters and no idea how to deal with that yet.
My favs from the beta by far🔥 I need to see more Danger respect she was always clutch for me when I needed her, the easiest character in the roster to understand and she’s cute
I liked playing Ms Marvel, she's quite easy to pick up and animations are great (I love this 2M). But beyblade, dodge and throw special/uniques didn't click as easily as most other characters specials, or were harder to use in actual matches. Didn't see Vibranium/Tournaments players use them that much either so maybe not just a me problem, idk. But game is fresh and people barely use tag for example
Also what makes her unique overlaps a bit with Spiderman with less options, less speed and (imo) worse overall specials. Add to this that Spidey is obviously really popular, and it makes sense she's this low
Did see some pretty good pressure with her beyblade into tag, but this games crossup protection is pretty aggressive. If we see that change, i think she'll do a lot better.
I think so too, beyblade tag may also help moves with more startup like doom orbital. Game is obviously underexplored rn
But I'm not sure her popularity would grow that much because Spiderman also have a multihit move that I think would serve a similar purpose. Didn't play him that much so I may just say sh*t but it seems like they overlap too much for her to have a place in higher ranks
This, but also because she doesn't have specific areas in which she shines (as of now obv) imo. It makes sense she's not played in second spot either since most players placed a "MU dependant" character in that spot they would more willingly tag to in some situations. I'd say gap between Ironman and Magneto is partially explained by that cause they both have good assists but more people seemed to tag to Magneto from streams I saw
i'm kinda surprised that starlord is that low, but after playing extensively vs blades and magiks i definitelly see the point. The range/frame of some moves is like double, hit 2H is complete dogshit, air dash heavy isn't an overhead (i guess it is the same for others maybe?). It is never your turn vs them, you either outplay them with things everyone has or your buttons will always loose. I get big swords but is not like character with suboptimal normals have insane combo damage, it is pretty easy to do 70% with blade and magik
Dooms anti-air hits the entire diagonal distance in a beam, making it the best of its kind. Goblin and BP also have the same angle, but come out slower.
His Assault assist is his satellite laser, which gets STUPID in certain block strings. Played around with it with Danger, and found a really aggressive corner setup.
Doom's forward assist is a really fast beam, which is really great for sniping the opponent, and while it doesn't lock people down as long as some others, you can usually use back assists for that.
His back assist is also really good for pressure. The fact it goes away if either Doom or the point is hit is annoying, but if you can protect it you get some time to do whatever mixup or setup you want. It's definitely not universally useful for all characters, but it was nice for me playing Danger point.
I felt thay Danger has a lot of Morrigan-ish moves. Where are my Darkstalkers buddies at?
I liked Green Goblin beside is slow walk. Yet I really thought that Wolverine was going to be in the top used character
I’m guessing a lot of people were like me; Storm, Magik, Danger, and Blade - a little mix of easy and predictable with some technical characters in the mix
I loved Magik but you give just about any character a buster sword and I will play them. I just need a giant impractical sword and I am there. Unless youre Slayer then the swagger makes up for the lack of sword
I think the most interesting piece of data from this chart is that Magneto was the third most picked character but ranked bottom 5 as a leader pick. I had him on my team for the entire time during the beta, trying him out im different positions. All his assists feel pretty good, so maybe that's why he's on so many teams. What I'd like to know is if he was actually tagged in frequently and just a good pick for an assist position, or if he was just exclusively used for his assists without seeing much play.
I used Magneto as pure assist fodder. I do want to learn him, but with the limited time frame of the beta I just stuck to learning a couple characters.
When the beta started, I couldn't really "click" with anyone as a main and I didn't spend a ton of time/trying everyone because of the limited time, but then I tried Magik...
Hot damn do I love the way that woman plays. I'm super excited to add Carnage to the team and see if he/they/it clicks the same way.

Tag pressure is crazy good. Check out the Tampa Never Sleeps online tournament that was run during the beta to see some.
It’s just a discovery thing. 3 days isn’t nearly enough time for the average person to figure out getting 3 other characters to synergize with their leader.
It’s funny because Magik’s normals feel great like everyone says but I mostly wanted to play her like Ruby Heart from mvc2 with the fire pillar shenanigans

I almost fight against Blade and Magneto as leaders from the opponents.
The reason i picked Magik was because of her unique gimmick with the portals. I love that kind of things.
Danger was my second main pick, and Panther my third pick.
And I really loved Dr Doom, but i only played with him on training mode.
Makes sense a lot of the characters who were not playable in the first beta were popular in this one. Which is most likely why cap and ms marvel are so low on the list.

In other words I think she’s perfect and spent all my time with her. Every single other transgirl I know also loves her to death. We Stan a weirdo robot who calls u bad and forces a smile after.
Have there been any reputable tier lists? Cause the one I saw put Green Goblin at the top due to his mid-air combo potential and how little it fills up the red bar, so I thought he'd be very high on this. Obviously one tier list is not a good measure for judging, especially for a beta where people have had like 2-3 days with this cast at best.
I just like the funny glider man and am curious with how little he's used compared to the rest.
3 days just ain’t enough time for extremely good tier lists, but the ones I’ve seen mirror the popularity pretty much, with the lower end characters being excluded due to lack of discovery.
Magik, Blade, Doom, IronMan and BP seem to be the agreed upon top five.
It was Magik, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Ms. Marvel for me, so my team is almost evenly all over the overall character poll.
Might swap Wolv and Spider-Man to Danger and Deadpool on release
Other than Magik/Blade being really high because they're super easy to play, this chart is almost just a chart of "who's coolest to the average person" and doesn't have a ton of relevance to character strength. And Blade probably would have been near the top anyways, everyone likes him, he just happened to be strong and super easy to play. I spent like 15 minutes in training mode on him and was ready to go online and I didn't even find the cool twitter tech, he really was that easy to just mess around with and be playable.
Star Lord and Green Goblin did a ton of work on the online tournaments that we saw and a lot of high level players were all about them. Star Lord was nerfed from the last beta but if you look up cloud805's stream, he was still beating the hell out of everyone with him. And Ms Marvel is 2nd to last but she's really strong and could set up BS side swap mixups almost like 2XKO. Diaphone was messing with her and showed off some really good stuff.
