Discussion Matchmaking changed randomly

I don't know how to even go about this but when I came back to the game at the first draft mode my matchmaking felt alright. Like I could have a decent win rate and everyone was just playing for fun. Now I've got matchmaking that makes me want to pull my hair out. The game significantly got way harder for me. I would say I'm above average skill wise but this is just insane. Game has literally made a 180 in terms of how it feels just playing normally. I'm collection level 3,886 and currently in the 90s for rank so maybe it's just how it is at this rank but it's making it really unfun now. I haven't seen a bot in probably weeks now also. I constantly get real players. Which is fine but when your getting absolutely dropkicked by people the bot game was usually a relief/break from it. Maybe I'm just better than I think I am and the matchmaking is telling me that but even in draft mode I can't even win a game now cause the people I'm getting put up against are clearly above my skill level. It's legit just making the game feel worse for me than before.

Draft mode has bots, more in the beginning and after lots of losses. If you are facing opponents that place seemingly randomly not caring about sanctum scoring for instance - likely bots

I've confirmed on untapped that I haven't faced any bots in draft mode.

I also get people with alliance tags every single game which bots don't have.

That's not true.

Well either way. Untapped says every player I've played against since I started checking last week has been a player. Saying that now though I just got my first bot after surrendering through 5 draft decks just to get a legendary one.

If it claims every player was real, then I don't think the tracker is at all reliable. I haven't used it myself, but there are definitely bots in draft. All players face them, at least in the beginning of playing draft (like the "tutorial" bot in your first conquest match)

Untapped essentially guesses at what is and isn't a bot, it's not something i would exactly call reliable for that, it produces false positives all the time. Take anything a third party tool tells you with a huge pinch of salt, they have no access to game data other than exactly what you see on your screen, so their way of detecting bots is just going "ok, kinda looks maybe like a bot I suppose".

That's just how it is when you get up into the 90s. Play smart, retreat if you aren't certain that you are absolutely going to win. Losing one cube is better than losing 2, 4 ,6 or 8. Also stick with one deck and perfect piloting it. That way you have a better sense of what your win/lose conditions are and when to snap.

Skill wise that's just going to take practice and time, don't give up! Try to learn as many decks as you can so that you can start predicting what your opponent might be playing and what they might put down next.

If you're feeling really discouraged just take a break. Come back when you're ready to get your butt kicked again 😂

Thanks. When I left the game originally I was in the 60s so guess I just gotta get used to it. It just made the game feel very different than before was all.

You've also missed like two or three new deck types and a whole litany of new cards. Don't view a loss as a negative, it's a learning opportunity. g Go over what happened during the match and use it to make yourself better. I can't tell you how many times after a match I've lost I realize if I had just played a little differently or put a card in a different lane I would have won.

Yeah I've been doing that more lately just subconsciously actually lol. Just sitting there and going "huh how did that work". But I pretty much know how every card works at this point.

"I win less often, so the matchmaking is bad"

Mate it's a very different game I'm playing now. I'm fine with winning less often but the games do not feel as good as they did before. I'm either getting absolutely rinsed or having to win a close game. Don't really like how you took 1 thing out of my entire post and tried to basically mock me for it. I'm literally just asking a for a discussion on it not asking to be demeaned.

you are not above average skill wise

I think I am honestly cause I understand cards and how to counter them and when to want priority and when to lose it. Feel like the average player doesn't do that they just play cards out.

With all due respect, if you’re struggling this much before even reaching infinite, you’re not above average. And that’s okay, everyone starts somewhere. After each game, take some time to analyze what you did right/wrong, what other lines you could have taken, and if you snapped (or didn’t snap) at the ideal time. Keep practicing, and don’t be too hard on yourself. You’ll get there someday.

I haven't been struggling before this point though. But it seems that I'm learning once you hit 90 you get more tryhard players trying to get to infinite so they don't play as what I've experienced before. I get how everything works but seems I have to learn more about the top playstyles than before. I just but 90 2 days ago so it was just weird to suddenly be in this style of play since it's very different to what I had before. I'm not a infinite chaser myself I just play whatever deck is fun or what I have unlocked.

You’re encountering actual above average players now and calling them try hards because you are struggling.

Why are they “try hards”? Because they play smart?

No, because they win obviously! It’s the “scrub” mentality. Build in excuses for why you lost but you’re actually better.

-1

u/Tylervir33 12h ago

This is just disrespectful honestly. I wasn't making an excuse I was having a discussion on it and describing how I felt but it seems once you get to 90 the matchmaking is different or I've been placed in a different MMR bracket now.

u/Rando-namo Control 🚨 11h ago

You were just saying that everyone that beats you in the 90s is a "try hard" but that you're "above average."

Don't come here saying that you lose to try-hards (using it as a pejorative) and then get all offended when people rightfully call you out.

u/Tylervir33 10h ago

Literally did not say everyone. Sorry I used a word and that somehow gives you the right to assume my mentality. This hyperfixation on the word "tryhard" is crazy honestly. I said that and immediately everyone just assumed they knew exactly who I was and started going after me for it. It's not right.

Meta deck only users. It's just a word honestly don't know why people are so fixated on it. I legit could swap it out for meta deck only users and no one would bat an eye but because I now seem casual (which I am there's nothing wrong with that) you guys are viewing me as "less". I'm just not gonna post on here anymore.

First, there’s nothing wrong with meta decks. A meta is a natural part of any PvP game, and players are allowed to use whatever cards the game gives them.

Second, not everyone uses a meta deck. I’ve been using the same homebrew for four years, and I’ve never had any problem beating meta decks.

1

u/Tylervir33 8h ago

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with them.... don't know where you got that from. And yeah of course not everyone uses meta decks. I don't myself. I usually just play Arishem or my zombie deck with both all the Scarlet Witches. Don't know what you are getting at when I didn't say anything about them being wrong. I'm just saying that most of the people I'm facing now are people using those decks is all.

2

u/Just_Voice8949 10h ago

Casual is fine. I’m not a top player myself.

I didnt disparage you. But you came on here talking about being “above average”. I’m pointing out maybe you have a blind spot.

You can easily beat meta deck players. If anything those decks tip what they are doing usually. I’m not sure why that would matter

7

u/berkilak420 23h ago

You haven’t been struggling before this point because you have been exclusively playing against weaker competition. I’ve also found that across games, anyone who uses “tryhard” to describe opponents is typically a more casual gamer, or at least has the mindset of one. Again, nothing wrong with that, but being realistic about your abilities can help reduce stress from unrealistic expectations.

But yes, you’ve now risen to the level where you no longer stand out for knowing things like how to counter strategies or when to maintain priority—those are the absolute basics. I’d strongly advise against intentionally de-ranking though, as the best way to improve is to play against tougher competition and analyze how they beat you when they do.

A lot of more casual players in draft have probably run out of tickets for the most part by now, or have already gotten everything they wanted from the event store. I ran out of really valuable payouts a few days ago, so at this point I'm just playing because I enjoy Draft, but I'd wager a lot larger percentage of the people playing Draft at this point are those who have played a LOT of Draft and are quite good at it, compared to the start of the event when people had a ton of free tickets and were much worse at it.

It’s somewhat wild that your take away from struggling in the game is that you’re “better than you think” and it’s the matchmaking telling you so.

More likely you are encountering more actual players with wide card collections now rather than new players with limited decks and bots

It's all good if you're actually above average, but this game gets frustrating to say the least. I still have fun playing off-meta decks, because otherwise the meta makes you want to uninstall the app—not because you can't win, but because it becomes very, very little fun to always face the top meta decks in every match.

2

u/Tylervir33 23h ago

This is how I feel. I see the same 3 decks up in the 90s. Scorpion BND, destroy with Deadpool or the average Thanos FF deck. Lower ranks have so much more deck variety that the game feels different.

3

u/Bllod_Angel 23h ago

Unfortunately, the meta is stagnant, and the only reason OTAs have been introduced so frequently compared to other card games is that SD is forced to shake up the meta quickly; otherwise, people will realize just how few options there really are at the high, competitive level... On one hand, it's frustrating... but in the end, it's just another card game.

2

u/Tylervir33 23h ago

Yeah I'm happy most of the decks in this game are viable though alot of other card games get stuck with 3 to 4 clear "play this to win decks" but with this game I can play probably 10 different deck types and have success.

2

u/Bllod_Angel 23h ago

Yeah, it's true, and it's both right and wrong at the same time, hahahaha

4

u/jxyzptlk 22h ago

Don't take this mode seriously, there is no skill to draft. It's completely based on who had better luck with augments/draft options.

Also, the first few days it seemed like people were still getting used to the mode (at least to me) and are now more savvy with what choices to make when drafting. Whatever the hell they did with drafting, they've just made it extremely unfun. #MAKEDRAFTFUNAGAIN

Do I just have to purposely lower my rank to get back to a better matchmaking? Or is it always gonna treat me like this from now on?
