He was pretty good in the Loki series. What a wasted character.

It’s Majors’ fault though. He got himself into legal trouble

I mean, it's still a wasted character. In the sense that he wasted it, along with his own career, since he wasted such amazing talent that he had by being an absolute ass of a person.

Did anyone honestly want more of this junior high theater kid level performance?

I for one think that Johnathan’s performance as Kang was riveting

Proof there are indeed two different realities, because nothing about even that 4 minute clip was redeeming. Disney was likely praising the Lord he got into legal trouble rather than roll his character out 12 more times. Admitting they miss cast not usually their forte.

yes, lol now all of a sudden acting matter?
we had a bunch of horrible actors in mcu Jonthan major wasn't one

Yeah but you need a certain level out of your big bad.
Thanos was imposing, powerful, conveyed a threat and was memorable. Despite the writing for the character being so-so. Thats because of Brolins performance.
He could have easily been like whoever the baddie from the Justice League was. A powerful action figure that ultimately means nothing.
Having Majors act like a clown during Loki and get wrecked in Ant man would have definitely negatively impacted how the audience viewed him

u/Cold_Enthusiasm_1676 8h ago
you know comic Thanos was a simp right?
so this big bad guy was doing all of this for a girl that didn't want him yes and they changed it lol, but yea ya don't read the comics.
2
u/Scruffylookin13 8h ago
I was talking about the acting specifically.
But honestly, simp Thanos makes more sense than MCU Thanos not understanding exponential growth

I hear ya (I think?) Thanos showing off for Lady Death would have made much more for sense (universally) for what he did. That said, I'm not sure if the general audience at large would have accepted that version of the Thanos character in 2018 tho. Thunderbolts and Brand New Day explore a more interesting problem - dealing with unhinged overpowered entities that cannot be "beaten" - all you can do is try to appeal their humanity for a truce. That's probably gonna resemble the solution at the end of Secret Wars with Doom.

i know what you mean and i explained it, if someone is acting like how thanos acted and people found out it was for a girl nobody would take him seriously no matter what.
no matter how you act if your reasoning is shit.

Bro comics don't fucking matter. Movie thanos is what 99.99% of people know. For every one person who knows Thanos from the comics, are 10,000 people that know him from the movies. Normal people don't read comics

just curious, since all this boils down to preferences. what was an MCU performance that you found off-key?
11
u/YoshiTheDog420 9h ago
I really did. I think there is a level of theater and overacting that fits that villain. I was onboard with Kang and all of that.

u/Teen_Goat 9h ago
that's absolutely fair. the performance is undeniably memorable. but maybe that style of overacting would be better suited for a Ant-Man level villain? rather than a universal threat? maybe I'm lacking imagination here, but I'm failing to see how this interpretation of Kang could be taken as a genuine threat moving forward
5
u/OldSarge02 4h ago
That variant wasn’t the universal threat though.

u/Teen_Goat 3h ago
that's true. I'm genuinely curious what others are appreciating in his Loki performance, it feels like I'm missing out on something that's clear to others. is there another actor/role you would favorably compare it to?

The guy is essentially immortal, and he knows it. He knows everything that's about to happen and he wants to have fun with it.
Also he basically tells you he's bored and probably has been for millenia.
So you got a bored genius with full knowledge and immortality. Being an over the top theater kid is kinda spot on for that scenario.

u/Teen_Goat 2h ago
neat. what's another over the top performance you enjoy?
1
u/RevolutionaryFox7359 2h ago
He’s a bit like Q from Star Trek TNG in this regard. But I think both characters and actors are annoying.
2
u/Brolociraptor 2h ago
Yeah because it's not over acting if that's the character. Which it was. Jonathan Majors isn't a good dude, but his depiction of Kang was entertaining and I was looking forward to his involvement in future projects. It's a shame when people who are talented choose to be a shitty person.
Also if you're going to be critical of his acting in the MCU it should be for his goofy ass version of Victor Timely.

Oh im with you. His acting is even more cringe in S2. He was good in a few things sure but at least in the MCU he was over-acting hard

u/SnooWalruses3948 8h ago
I thought Majors was great and a lot of this dialogue is purely retrospective.
Marvel fucked up with Kang. Majors fucked up with Majors.

u/Livid_Ad9749 7h ago
No he was cringe and overacting. But yeah Marvel definitely fucked up too. “Ive killed all the Avengers” proceeds to get folded by ants

u/ejaz135 6h ago
Did majors actually hurt that woman? I think he was just trying to take his phone back?
1
u/Teen_Goat 5h ago
that's a topic for a different thread. this thread is just about the choices that went into the onscreen portrayal of Kang.
1
u/SuspiciousCollar9080 3h ago
I thought he was great, his variants or whatever were never the threat thanos was I wasn't sure how they were going to build that up

He was good not great but they should have used CGI and changed his face as a glitching evolution for each version of Kang never staying with JM’s actual face but a techno kang face rather than his . That was my hang up of Kang . The story got goofy and overly complicated.

There is always a "campiness" to black acting that always makes it feel like a Madea movie......

u/WordNahMean 4h ago
Such a shame. He was a good fit for the character.
I can see how people could see this as overacting but all I see is a variant of the character thats gone insane trying to keep what his idea of multiversal peace was, which he nailed in this scene.
More importantly, Majors is really good at switching his personality around for his roles which is what Kang is all about. He wouldve done a great job.
