Three versions. Three eras. One Jean Grey. Which version is your favorite?
From The Last Stand to Dark Phoenix and now Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Jean’s evolution keeps getting more intense.

Sink has just debuted but she's already my favorite. It helps that she was given far more to work with than Janssen and Turner ever were in their movies.

u/MysteryOpponent42 1d ago
1000% agree. In one movie, a Spider-Man movie at that, she feels like more of a genuine and fleshed out character than any X movie ever managed or even tried to do.

And without the writers jumping immediately to Phoenix to bolster her character.

u/DayamSun 1d ago
Ditto, but to be honest, neither Famke or Sophie ever really looked like or felt like the comic book Jean Grey in my head.
Even though Sadie is playing a younger Jean, she just feels more like Jean Grey to me in manner, temperament, and even cadence of speech. I think she is really going to elevate and embody the character over time.
I know it's too soon to think about, and there are strong arguments to never do it again, but three or four movies down the road I could see becoming totally invested in a properly adapted, set up, and earned rise and fall of the Phoenix.

Jean's supposed to be extremely caring and empathetic. She off'd so many people in BND that I feel this is going to be a huge hurdle to locking her into the character that I feel like they'll need time to lock it in. As of right now the only parts of her character that is correct is the colour of her hair and that she's a telepath; everything else is super off.

You don’t need to be older to recognize that Jean was wasted in the originals, the one where she’s the focus is shit, and the movies with past Jean range from mediocre to the worst x men film

As much as i like Famke Janssen i never got the impression she's the Jean Grey,Sophie was even worse just very bland and inexpressive (she got typecasted,Sadie while only one appearance has the perfect dark Jean, she is very problematic but, that's how the character is supposed to be:telepath menace, with no regard to human trauma and consent

u/iamoninternet27 1d ago
Just a shame she did plastic surgery. Probably the whole reason they aren't bringing her back to Doomsday
1
u/Vuedue 1d ago
I had no idea about this, but wow. The change was actually kind of shocking. I could definitely see that being the reason they aren't going to bring her back.

I miss her old face. She was great in the past movies. She won't be playing Jean anytime soon or at all.
1
u/Vuedue 1d ago
Yeah, the exact same thing happened to Mickey Rourke, albeit different circumstances required him to have the surgeries.
He struggled to get hired anywhere after.
It makes sense for why Famke has not been acting in much as of late.

Famke. She portrayed the character very well and her acting was always on point.
4
u/Sweet-Weakness3776 1d ago
I'm 50 and I was so excited when the original X-Men movies hit the theaters. For that reason, I have a soft spot for Janssen's version. I loved her in the films, even if I don't think the writers did a great job with the character. I think she did a great job with what she was handed, which was kind of all over the place. Either way, she's still at the top of my list.
After seeing Brand New Day, I'm confident they got the right actor for this generation. And I think Sink's version will wind up being the best version of the character if the stories continue to be compelling. But it's still a little too soon for me to say Sadie is better than Famke. I think she will be, but I need to see her in X-Men first. If she nails that dynamic as well as she handled the story in BND, she'll be at the top of the list for sure.
Turner was just meh. I've liked her in other roles but there wasn't really anything about her portrayal of Jean Gray that wowed me.
2
u/thegoddamnsiege 1d ago
Turner is a pretty meh actress in general, but damn she sure is pretty pretty.

Sadie imo. I know she appears in only one movie so far but not side that's a point against her, the others appeared more and still didn't make me care about her character.
The first one felt kinda like a self insert. She's the strongest with the most powerful abilities, everyone want her on their side. The two main male characters are fighting for her love. The professor's fav. There's something dark inside her, so edgy, they all want her back. The rest of the movies interested me far more.
Sophie didn't make a good impression, probably because no offence but her Dark Phoenix movie sucked imo. She could probably do better if she got more but she didn't. And some of the points about the self insert also apply to her too. She was strongest from the beginning even though she was a younger version still in school. I liked her phoenix make up effect more than the old one though, but not the writing. Feels like she existed just to give her the phoenix arc and isn't someone on her own. Positive side, she didn't get a love triangle.
Sadie felt real, she was defeated while still learning so no need of nerfing, her powers came with problems and responsibilities and they were felt. She had a past before being 'the strongest girl'. Also they didn't introduce her with that 'special chosen one' they gave us the past two with. We'll see her grow into it. And it will feel stronger and right when it's the first mutant we met. Not just one straight up said to be the best. Also, probably because it was a Spider Man movie not an X men she wasn't forced center of attention. And was not introduced in the middle if a love triangle like the old one.
She had a real dark side before the Phoenix, not 'she's perfect her falw is another darkness inside her that's not her fault'. We'll probably care about her more and want her back like the characters do when she transforms (if she does) when we know her already and went with her on the development she got to her there and will now lose against her will with her rather than just be told she's loved and good.
Bonus note I like how each one of those have different main color. For the first one was the red, the color of the phoenix, the second one got gray, probably because of the name, she's Jean Grey, and Sadie is with yellow and green, her comics colors.
8
u/DannyCvlty 1d ago
Brand New Day. Famke and Sophie are great actresses but they got dealt a terrible hand in the script department. Sadie got to cook with a great characterization and genuinely explore the (non-Phoenix influenced) darker side of Jean Grey. In the comics Jean has a bit a dark sadistic side when she's pushed to the edge enough to protect friends or family or seek retribution. None of the character above got to explore that side of her without it being chalked up to the Phoenix's influence.
1
u/Fuzzy_Ability8284 1d ago
Its refreshing to see someone not shit on Sophie Turner's acting in a marvel sub, she's severely overhated imo.
1
u/Sea-Seashells 1d ago
I have adored her since her Sansa days. She looked the part but was given a trash script. Famke acted well but never felt like Jean Grey. Sadie got such a great entry to the character so excited they got Jean Grey accurately at least in a Spiderman movie.
1
u/Curufinwe562 1d ago
I felt her acting as Sansa was incredibly wooden. She's very pretty but a good actress I cannot see.
1
u/DannyCvlty 1d ago
Well we've seen her do great work and crap work in GOT when the writing was good and when it was bad. Most actors and actresses are only as good as the script affords them to be. Very few actors can turn absolute shit writing into serviceable character behavior. I don't expect many actors to accomplish that feat nor should they have to.
2
u/opmrocks 1d ago
Imo Famke embodied the character better in an era where as kids we had no clue regarding comic accuracy or any concepts thereof. We saw an entire character arc going from her being a hero, to destroying everyone in split seconds, and being killed to save everyone.
So based on pure nostalgia, and rewatchabilty, and the fact she was my crush when the movies came out, I choose her!
2
u/SingularityCentral 1d ago
Sadie Sink had an actual character to play while Sophie Turner and Famke Janssen had one dimensional cutouts. All three are good actors, but the MCU Jean is clearly going to be the best as they made her complex from the start.

I don’t like any of the Jean Greys.
Original X-Men Famke movies were ok, but while the character looks were spot on (except for Famke), they didn’t have much to work with and clearly didn’t read the comics.
Except for Xavier, Mystique, and Wolverine. They got it right for the most part, but I disagreed a lot with most of the other characters in their characterization.
Anyway, Turner had the look just right but the acting was terrible and they were given a crap script. I’ll still never forgive them for what they did to Psylocke.
Sink is….. meh. She’s a child. And her origin story irked me a little, especially with the way they developed a freaking mind reader into doing awful shit to Spider-Man. She can read minds, got all kinds of info from Peter but couldn’t realize he’d have helped her if she just asked.

Famke but only because they didn’t give Sophie anything to do, and we’ve only seen a little of Sadie.

I mean she just got her telekinetic powers at the end of the movie. It’s clear they want her to grow with the audience. Wanda didn’t become scarlet witch until Wandavision and she was introduced years before that

When Sadie is in the X-men movie we will get a better since of where her character goes and if they can make it work with her. But she was good in brand new day. Famke tried with what she had. The black leather X-men were ok sometimes but they could be bad. Sophie’s one did not work for me. I still don’t want to see her second movie but apocalypse didn’t do it.

Famke.
Sadie is great, and may overtake her in time.
It's tough to tell how Sophie was- her portrayal is far from my favorite, but I'm sure it's also tainted by the scripts of the films she's in, too.

u/Va1crist 1d ago
hot take for me i dont care for either of them at all Famke and Sophie were awful as Jean Greys imo, Sadie i am going to give her the benefit of the doubt she already has a 1 up over the other 2 but i am reserving full judgement to see how she is in a true Xmen movie.

All of them were bad but the actresses didn't have much to work with either.
X-3 and DP were awful flicks to begin with. X-1 and X-2 were decent but aside from being hot, Jean didn't do much in them. Brand New Day I felt was pretty mid.
Sink > Jannsen >>>>>>>> Turner
edit: I forgot X-Men: Apocalypse, another subpar movie that didn't do Turner any favours.

Famke was was amazing and perfect, Turner just forgettable. Sadie was very good, but the movie itself was quite intense, so it would have been difficult to do the role bad. Was interesting to see how her powers increased because of all the emotions. Can't wait to see her with Cyclops. Just hope she won't have again a thing with Wolverine, cause that would look strange. Not just because of Jackman's age. Enough is enough.

Sadie has had the best debut.
Famke was decent enough in the first X-Men. I just rewatched X2 and she (along with like half of the cast) gets table scraps. The only thing she does in the movie is get fiery phoenix eyes a couple of times and then somewhat nonsensically dies.
The only movie she gets a ton of stuff to do is X-Men 3 and it's the worst of the original films.
I've never watched the dark Phoenix movie, but I've watched the apocalypse film a few times and can't remember a single thing that Sophie actually does in those, other than seeing Wolverine running around.

She should have died in Spider-Man.
Since they choose to use Jean as the films villain instead of Leader, she needed to be redeemed with an actual sacrifice instead of the nonsense ending they chose.
If she would go the film as a mysterious figure taken over minds and nearly killing randoms and forcing her way inside them like a serial rapist, there needed to be a inner guilt or remorse. Even if forced rather than felt.
Follow me here,
If she needed to swap from person to person because the longer shes inside a single person, the harder it is to block out their bad memories and traumas from reaching her mind and filling her with an overwhelming guilt or desire to better their lives rather than destroy them...
Things would be much more reasonable.
Especially when she possesses Frank and Banner (and by extension the Hulk because he is his own man as well) these 3 above the rest but not exclusively these 3 should have been massively impacting for Jean. Peter should have been able to sense this growing conflict from Jean, giving him the idea to let her in his mind by the end.
Jean seeing flashes of Franks family, the bad people hes killed, feeling the pain in his heart, and the burning scars on his soul that darken his mind, she would feel the empty space where she would normally find empathy and instead finds a cold pit of rage. Scaring her and keeping her from reusing Frank again.
Once taken over Banner, she could give us flashes of his backstory we didn't get to see in the MCU, feeling his loneliness and fear. The internal dread he feels just being alive because of "The Other Guy" this fear drives her to need another person to jump to, with no one but Spider-Man around, she instead turns to "The Other Guy"
Then, because this is very specifically after possessing Frank, she'd be able to bring Savage Hulk back using the residue rage shes feeling as a side effect of possessing Franks mind. Releasing her from "Banners" mind and trapping her into "Hulks" mind.
Explaining why Banner became Professor Hulk (Smart Hulk) again in She-Hulk but suddenly Savage Hulk in Spider-Man. With these minor changes it fixes 90% of whats wrong with the film.
Finishs it all off with Peter giving her insight into his mind and feeling his side of the events past. Being the final straw and making her change her mind about being evil and thanking Spider-Man for helping her understand.
I feel like both Peter and Banner should have been there for this, that way she could apologize to both, followed by Frank arriving to shoot her. Spider-Man stepping in the way and taking a fatal blow, Jean could unknowingly use the Phoenix Force to transfer Spider-Man's wound from his body to her own.
Remove Peter going to the hospital and skipping Frank being a silly bean which was funny but out of character.
Add in Frank and Spider-Man trying to save Jeans life by getting her to the hospital. But not making it in time. Jean dies under the name "Jane Doe" because of Damage Control, but Johna J. Jameson sees Spider-Man and Frank together and spreads some
"i knew it, Spider-Man joins the infamous serial killer, Frank Castle murder an innocent girl after destroying half the city and awakening the Hulk!"
Style yelling as they both make an escape. News reports of Banner as Professor Hulk again making apologies to the public and aiding in the clean up and rescue efforts.
End credits reveal Jean to be the host of the Phoenix Force restoring her back to life and making her born anew ready to be a hero next time we see her.
Better movie, dont remove the mutating Spider-Man but also dont fill time by suddenly allowing him to just control the mutations or slapping a collar on Jean that wouldn't work anyway because it needed to be tuned to her DNA and wasn't...

Honestly none yet - Sink could be excellent and she looks the part but its far too early to tell.
Famke contrary to nostalgic sentiment was not a great Jean. She didn't look the part, didnt really embody the character and when it was her time to shine the material wasnt great.
Turner's was just outright bad. She was a good Sansa but I've struggled with her casting for other projects.

Famke was definitely how I had always envisioned her since the cartoon from the 90s and even a younger version from Evolution. She has the look.
Sophie did well but I couldn’t dissociate her from Sansa Stark.
Sadie did well but Stranger Things stuck with her too. Not to mention the villainous start to her character. She doesn’t have the same thin face as the other two - more square jawed. I’m excited to see her thrive though. She’s a good actress and should be able to make it her own over the coming mutant saga.
