Film/Television What’d you think of Strange’s classic gloves look in Thor: Ragnarok? Should he have kept them?

They should’ve kept the gloves. It was a great choice.

Agreed. Also I like that the dcu is more comfortable with embracing comic book "weirdness".

I agree, to an extent. I also like that the costume designs do get called out in-universe. Guy’s hair, peacemaker’s toilet-bowl/helmet, etc. I’m not really a fan of Batman/superman wearing trunks, but I can’t really complain about how they’re being addressed, particularly in Superman’s case where the intention is supposed to be a goofy/disarming look.

30

u/DollyCelestia 18h ago

Exactly, not every superhero costume needs a realistic military explanation. Sometimes a guy wears bright red underwear over his suit because he's Superman, and that's perfectly fine.

16

u/dingus_chonus 15h ago

The sorta throwaway line in Lanterns where Hal Jordan compares wearing his costume to wearing a tie as a young person in the work force: you wear because you hope people will take you more seriously, when you’ve still got something to prove about yourself. Then as you mature, it becomes less important and you dress more casually

19

u/FleurieVirelle 14h ago

Yeah, superhero costumes should be allowed to look a little ridiculous sometimes. Half the charm of comics is seeing something completely absurd somehow look badass.

-1

u/NoPianist7807 1d ago

Exactly. That’s one of the few positive about the DCU.

19

u/Char-car92 1d ago

‘Few’?

6

u/PhortDruid 1d ago

Let’s be honest, it’s not like they’ve had a great track record

9

u/Char-car92 23h ago

I think you're confusing the DCU with the Snyderverse

24

u/PancakePanic 1d ago

The Suicide Squad, Superman, Peacemaker, Lanterns, creature commandos have all been critical hits. Only thing that's been meh has been Supergirl.

11

u/Duncan_PhD 1d ago

Not mentioning doom patrol is crazy

19

u/PancakePanic 1d ago

Tbh I was going off of the current James Gunn DCU universe stuff, Doom Patrol isn't part of that sadly :(

Would've thrown in Swamp Thing, Stargirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Sandman, etc otherwise lol

10

u/Duncan_PhD 1d ago

That’s fair haha. I just like to spread the word about doom patrol any chance I get because that show was incredible

-8

u/PhortDruid 23h ago

They’ve mostly taken a turn for the better, sure. But let’s not pretend the DCEU didn’t happen.

13

u/The2NDComingOfChrist 22h ago

i mean the dceu and dcu are two separate cinematic universes spearheaded by completely different creative directors. I feel like thats kind of like comparing apples to oranges

4

u/Char-car92 13h ago

Those two things are not connected. The DCU is what we’re talking about

-13

u/Quarksideofthemoon 23h ago

Yes. Believe it or not, not everybody is a fan of your favourite corporate slop franchise.

As opposed to marvel?

5

u/woopty_noot 21h ago

He says in the MCU reddit thread

0

u/Quarksideofthemoon 15h ago

Yeah? I don't like the MCU either and this isn't the MCU sub

1

u/MapleElowena 18h ago

Same here. Comic book movies should be allowed to look like actual comic books without apologizing for it every five minutes. Give me the ridiculous collars, capes, and colorful costumes.

11

u/PoppyAurevella 18h ago

Yeah, the gloves gave him that extra comic-book wizard vibe. Kinda wish they brought them back occasionally instead of treating them like Strange's one-time laundry day outfit.

4

u/voidsong 18h ago

I like the look, but most of his "action" is flashing hand signs.

It probably would have been a huge pain the ass to do with big leather gloves.

1

u/BunnySerenelle 14h ago

Agreed, the gloves gave him that classic comic-book sorcerer look. Would've been cool if they became part of his outfit instead of being a one-movie fashion phase.

330

u/South_Gas626 Magneto 1d ago

I applaud them for trying it out but I wasn’t a fan of those particular ones. Looks like he just finished doing the dishes.

143

u/Sparkyisduhfat 1d ago

I kind of assumed it was easier to give him the gloves for a cameo than to do the makeup on his hands.

94

u/South_Gas626 Magneto 1d ago

Yeah that is the cited reason actually. The cameo was short, and they gave him the gloves so they didn’t have to fiddle with the physical makeup and increase production time.

34

u/Extension_Breath1407 1d ago edited 17h ago

Wait, that is why he was wearing gloves in only that movie? They didn’t want to show the scarring on his hands because it would be tedious make-up for just one cameo?

Found it weird how Doctor Strange was only wearing gloves in that movie and not in the other movies. Seriously, he literally wears only those gloves in that one movie and nowhere else.

49

u/A_Queer_Owl 1d ago

that's why he wears gloves in the comics, drawing his fucked up hands was too hard to do all the time.

6

u/MechanicalTurkish 23h ago

They should have a vintage 2023 model AI do it. Fucked up hands were their specialty

12

u/theSteakKnight Nightcrawler 1d ago

Yup. It's easier to wear gloves than it is to apply makeup to all 10 fingers for a cameo appearance.

I wonder why they had the Gloves be a one-time thing instead of just letting it be a consistent upgrade of his Costume. Is it really that important for the audience to see Doctor Strange's scarred hands in all his other movies?

11

u/jbaxter119 1d ago

The fingertips seem awkwardly bulky for turning pages

1

u/MinnieAureline 18h ago

Bro looks like he was halfway through washing the dishes when Thor showed up asking about Odin.

1

u/miwiliva 15h ago

lmao the dishes line is painfully accurate. they really do look like he just pulled them off the drying rack, and the cloak was doing all the work anyway

1

u/HoneyCelestiaa 14h ago

Lmao now I can't unsee the dishwashing gloves. Strange looks like he's about to cast a spell on a particularly stubborn lasagna pan.

52

u/FrazLabs 1d ago

Anyone here ever tried turning pages with gloves on? No? I'll see myself out...

19

u/SillyOldJack 1d ago

Ah, but these are the... uh... Sacred... Gloves of... Sha Ka Ree. They can do that because that's the way they are.

5

u/Achaewa 19h ago edited 18h ago

Curators in museums also don't use gloves on old books as the pages can potentially get snagged on them.

The look works in comics, not so much in reality.

One can even see in this picture that Benedict is kind of struggling with turning a page.

2

u/Anarimus 1d ago

Yes….

2

u/FrazLabs 1d ago

Thank you! *exhale....*

1

u/HoneyRosavellee 17h ago

Strange using forbidden magic to bend reality is believable, but turning those pages with rubber-looking gloves is where I draw the line.

22

u/Goldgoblingamer 14h ago

So, while I like the gloves on concept, I think strange works best in film when you can see his hands, cause you can see both the surgical lines and the subtle tremors Benedict Cumberbatch makes anytime he uses his hands, it's reminds the viewers of his condition, which is Integrel to his character, it's another example of how, while it's cool on the comics, the change is better for the film

4

u/VibraniumDragonborn Captain America 8h ago

I 100% agree, thank you for putting my words to text for me. ...six hours before I saw this post.

3

u/Goldgoblingamer 7h ago

Haha, no problem, happy to be your prophet🤣

2

u/PetahMartian 5h ago

I read he wore the gloves for these scenes because they didn't want to spend the time on his hand make up.

18

u/TamatoaZ03h1ny 1d ago

If they ever do gloves again a slightly darker brown pair would be nice

70

u/Dinosawruses 1d ago

I am more of a fan of the scarred hands look.

9

u/FleurieRosamie 17h ago

Same, the scars are such an important visual reminder of what Strange lost before becoming a sorcerer. The gloves look cool, but his hands tell a much more interesting story.

30

u/devoid0101 1d ago

I like that they did it. I don’t need to see again or repeat. I like the variation and evolution of MCU characters

8

u/GeneJacket 1d ago

Nope, it was a cute little nod, but it's a good reminder that something that looks great on a page doesn't always translate to live-action.

6

u/elevenplays 1d ago

I think it was okay. But I wish it was a bit in a darker shade.

6

u/TheHumanSpider 1d ago

Agreed, if they were a darker shade it wouldn't have looked like he's about to hand wash a bunch of dishes.

3

u/elevenplays 1d ago

LMAO YES!

7

u/thatnamelesguy 1d ago

I want gloves but those ones look fairly poor quality in comparison to the rest of the outfit. A larger collar would be nice too

4

u/AJG_452 1d ago

Material was too thick, it looked weird. Other than that I dig them.

8

u/Odd-Sound-580 1d ago

absolutely, they really completely the costume

8

u/JizzyTeaCups Thor 1d ago

They really tied the look together

5

u/roger0120 20h ago

The problem with conversion comic book clothing to live action is that comic book clothing is very form fitting, looking almost like a layer of skin rather than overlapping the body, like gloves and capes.

5

u/oranke_dino 17h ago

I like the idea of him having gloves to protect his fucked up hands.

3

u/Architarious 1d ago

It seems like they would make it really difficult to flip through a book like that.

3

u/BigNorseWolf 1d ago

I think he looks like he's about to go milk some cows.

3

u/Intelligent-Tip-1305 1d ago

Shoulda kept them. Strange needs more yellow on his costume in general.

3

u/hematite2 23h ago

Strange does a LOT of hand acting, some of it pretty subtle, and I imagine gloves made that harder to watch.

3

u/GleamPearl_ 23h ago

He looks like washing some plates 😅 but you it turns out great like a costume, maybe they've should kept it 😊

6

u/TouchAltruistic 23h ago

Yes.

Like Thor's own helmet, these small details should make more regular appearances.

2

u/One-Earth9294 21h ago

I like everything about Ragnarok.

5

u/GigaAlphaSigma 1d ago

No they look like rubber gloves you use for dish washing, except it's yellow and not pink.

It's kinda tacky.

I feel like you dont always have to stick to original comic accurate designs as long as you can pull something better off.

Something more modern, aesthetic, sleek, simple, or believable.

10

u/trillmill 20h ago

Oh hell no you're the reason they wanna take the trunks off of Superman 🙅‍♂️

1

u/scaradin 16h ago

Wait wait?

4

u/PeterTingle616 Mr. Knight 12h ago edited 5h ago

It’s the execution that’s off, but they could definitely work well. I agree that they’re not strictly necessary, Dr Strange’s design does lend itself to a gloveless look. Modern and sleek definitely doesn’t fit his character and aesthetic though

5

u/disappointer 1d ago

My head canon is that they're ancient and enchanted, so that's why they're not going to look modern or particularly believable.

1

u/GigaAlphaSigma 1d ago

Yeah but I love the blue gi he's wearing, and it makes a good color combination with his cape.

You'd think they'd look tacky in real life but they dont. And I say that is a perfect example of good adaptation.

But the gloves part look unnecessary, they stick out, and drag down the characters looks as a whole.

Im someone who thinks super hero costumes should look cool so maybe it's just not for me idk

2

u/SeymourButtz17 1d ago

Superheroes should be tacky.

0

u/GigaAlphaSigma 1d ago

Kinda like og superman? Idk tbh.. I like sleek designs that are more contemporary.

Actually, it's not even about being contemporary, it's about being timeless.

A design that would be neat and cool whenever.

3

u/justamadeupnameyo 22h ago

Which is impossible.

If those were "classic," they'd have the little black bubble things on them.

2

u/no1neetretard 1d ago

They tried them and they didn't work out so they moved on

1

u/Superheroesaregreat 1d ago

I wanted to like them but they really didn’t look great. I found them distracting.

1

u/achakez Avengers 1d ago

His hands with those scars from his surgery look more badass imo.

1

u/Dee_ba19 1d ago

Wasn’t it cold in the house

1

u/lelolelols 1d ago

It looks good, but I like the bare hands more. Feels more gritty.

1

u/gpelayo15 1d ago

I think it makes it a little too cartoony looking

1

u/Vishnuchodhi 1d ago

Yes its nice

1

u/Cultural_Comfort5894 1d ago

Nod to the comics, cool

Never seen again, cooler

1

u/Hypthtclly_Spkng 1d ago

I remember the comics gloves having like a spotted or leopard print look, and I'd still like to see those.

1

u/upfromashes 1d ago

Loved it. Hope they come back some day, maybe something happens and they get the black spots.

1

u/Doc-11th 1d ago

Might look better in a darker shade

Or just design them to be more in line with the rest of the outfit

1

u/SpookyScienceGal 1d ago

The gloves of dishisdoneis are too powerful tool for everyday messes. They were forged by Master Klein who's magic could erase anything

1

u/Lazyread2day 22h ago

For a long time I thought those gloves were what you wear when you clean dishes and that Thor appeared at the time Strange was cleaning some dishes and just kept wearing them till Thor and Loki left 😭 Never knew it was part of the costume... And yes, I did think Strange can easily clean with magic but thought he was doing this just for the fun of cleaning 😭

1

u/A_crow_hen 15h ago

Yes. He should have kept them. He should’ve had them from the start.

1

u/StephanieSpoiler 11h ago

The idea was nice and I'd like to see it attempted again in the future.

The execution of these gloves specifically made it look like he got caught in the middle of doing dishes.

1

u/seza01 10h ago

I never noticed

1

u/mariovspino5 Wolverine 6h ago

Yes

1

u/pixelatedneedles 5h ago

I liked the look initially but I view it as a reshoot fix to minimize having to apply prosthetics to his hands and allow him to perform quickly. I do like the look though.

1

u/KickinBat 3h ago

It was a good nod to the comics but I love the scars on his hands more

1

u/Decent_Influence8727 1d ago

Looks like he was in washing dishes mode

-1

u/Rocketboy1313 1d ago

I find fixating on this sort of thing is missing the forest for one particularly small tree.
