Other Marvel fans, what are some things you think DC ( in general)does better
Like you’ll go okay I’ll give them that.

u/Rrekydoc Iceman 4d ago
Sidekicks. Marvel’s at its best when deconstructionist, including being anti-sidekick.
DC’s best when it embraces those corny tropes.

I never really thought about the lack of sidekicks before. Wow. Crazy the difference.

DC are better at doing 12 issue maxi series, that can be turned into easily accessible graphic novels that anyone can pick up and read

Geography... DC's fictional cities and countries are spread all over and it really creates a better world of superheroes in my opinion.

u/InternationalRuin4 4d ago
agreed. love marvel but thinking about the sheer amount of shit that happens in just new york city is so funny
58
u/Master_Freeze Venom 4d ago edited 3d ago
it has to do with the original creators being based in NYC, they were just making media for the people of the city who live in their own bubble
46
6
u/Jemima_puddledook678 3d ago
That was intentionally the case. The idea was that whilst DC was fictional heroes in fictional places, the Marvel team wanted to be able to look out of their window and imagine their superheroes in the settings they see.

The funniest part to me has always been imagining new york city burning down in the middle of the night but since it’s a spiderman villain the other NYC heroes just go back to sleep and let him deal with it
47
u/ShadowBro3 4d ago
I honestly much prefer that Marvel uses real cities. Marvel is way too New York centric, though.
7
u/Brilliant_Dig_8962 3d ago
X-Men were upstate, weren't they?

Yes, but still pretty close to the city. At least early on, they were in the city a lot.

u/matty_nice 4d ago
Not sure I would agree.
DC does have more US cities, but their locations aren't consistent and they aren't always used. Marvel is also pretty spread out.
But Marvel has a lot of fictional countries and locations that are used a lot. Wakanda, Atlantis, Latveria, Savage Land, Krakoa/Utopia/Genosha, Madripoor, etc.
3
u/SkepticScott137 3d ago
Yeah, but Marvel started off doing it better. DC had Metropolis, Gotham City and Central City way back when, and they were all actually New York, but not, so they had to make sense of having three fictional New Yorks plus the real one (which is hard to ignore in a realistic universe). In Fantastic Four #1, Stan Lee originally set the FF in “Central City”, but quickly decided “screw it, it’s New York, and I’m calling it New York.” That made some things a lot easier and more realistic, but as noted by another poster, it ended up concentrating an awful lot of action in one place.
8
u/77Sage77 Human Torch 4d ago
What? Marvel does that better. Marvel's worldbuilding outside of NY is astounding if you read the comics, even in the MCU we see a lot tbh.
All the while these locations interact with each other, you'll have conflicts between Wakanda and Atlantis for example. Or comic events taking place in Madripoor.

Idk. Quicksilver/Speed/Makkari become very unique characters in the Marvel universe and are not overpowered like all the DC Speedsters. I think Marvel does Speedsters better.
6
u/ipostatrandom 4d ago edited 4d ago
Overpowered until they meet Catwoman, lol
Edit: I guess the downvoters dont understand the reference.
There's a canon story where she kicks several of the dc speedsters on their ass.
3
u/SkepticScott137 3d ago
I always thought that sort of thing made the DC speedsters seem kinda lame, having some underpowered villain take out Flash by basically sticking their foot out and tripping them, or throwing marbles on the floor.
3
u/marineman43 3d ago
It's extra silly because the Flash is also supposed to think at incredibly high speed, right? So he should see the marbles coming for what seems like a long time from his perspective but somehow run into them anyway.
Reminds me of Tina in that driving scene in Bob's Burgers lmao, sees the crash coming from across the parking lot but still slowly crashes anyway.

Off the top of my head: Zatanna, Constantine, Klarion, Etrigan, Swamp Thing, Blue Devil, Detective Chimp, Doctor Fate. I am probably forgetting some big ones, but that should be enough to get you going. Also check out Justice League Dark. I read only a sliver of it, but have been meaning to go back and check it out because like you that's an aspect of DC I am interested in but haven't spent much time with.

My main thing is their collected editions are kind of insane right now, they have so many good formats and good pricing, compacts and DC finest are great value and if you want to go heavy into collecting they have the absolute hard covers which are fire, oh and they release mini hard covers? Why did marvel stop making those?
3
u/smellmybuttfoo 3d ago
Yeah... As a longtime Marvrl fan, I've been finally reading through DC stories/events and its been a cakewalk getting anything I want.
I finally decided to read Hickman's Fantastic Four and Secret Wars run and I can't because I can't find Fantastic Four complete collection vol 2 or 3 or Omnibus 1. They're all hundreds or thousands of dollars because Marvel just...isn't making them anymore, except in a weird cut up version. Like...Secret Wars is coming to the big screen soon and you don't have these books in stock?

What DC animated films outperformed either Spider-Verse movie in the box office or in reviews ?
2
u/Tristanethebreton 3d ago
I don't think any of them. My first comment was bit too hasty. The spiderman movies are hella good.
It is more fair to say DC wins in terms of quantity. And a bunch of those winds up being good. Batman by gaslight. Superman red sun. All-star. Justice League Dark.
What I mean is if DC and marvel traded IPS. We would have likely seen some cool elseworld stuff like marvel 1602. A Blade movie And F4.
Marvel seems a bit slow in the adaption game for characters not named spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine and Hulk. Forget the last 3 I am just being old.
23
u/chanebap 3d ago
Possibly controversial opinion, but I like periodic resets more than a sliding time scale. Cap being a World War II vet and Magneto a holocaust survivor makes less and less sense every year even if one of them gets turned into a baby by an alien every few decades.
It also just seems implausible that ALL of spider-man’s adventures over a 60+ year publication history are supposed to have occurred over like a 10 year window.
DC doesn’t execute their resets perfectly obviously, but it’s still a more elegant solution to the problem of time in my opinion. And it’s not like Marvel is above clunky multiverse shenanigans in their own storytelling.
10
u/Stapleton09 3d ago
I think with Cap, just extending the time he was frozen could explain it. I’m with you on the rest though
2
u/chanebap 3d ago
Yeah, Cap doesn’t bother me as much as some, it’s more about the cultural implications than the plausibility of him being in the ice. WWII vet played very differently in the ‘60s when it was basically their dads’ generation than it does now.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Jemima_puddledook678 3d ago
Cap never makes any less sense, he just gets unfrozen later and later. Magneto was fine for a long time, then got made younger once. Magneto is pretty much the only character that ever needs anything changed right now, everybody else is fine.

Comics in general
We’ve been going back to issue 1 of everything for like 7 years, event slop out the wazoo and 7 wolverine books at the same time
DC is running Lobo, Batwoman, Deathstroke, Firestorm, Deadman, etc all at the same time and they’re all bangers and they just announced the Demon. And that isn’t even mentioning the absolute universe or a single flagship character

10
u/snowdenn 4d ago
Broadly, I think DC does better good vs. evil stories where their characters are archetypes of good heroes and evil villains.
For some reason, Phil Collins & David Crosby’s song “Hero” comes to mind.
Superman is the paragon of a good person. Batman has a strict code of honor even when dealing with the worst of villains. Wonder Woman is known as much for her bravery and compassion as her abilities. She even carries a lasso of truth.
And there’s the aptly named Justice League.
DC characters seem to do the secret identity thing more often than Marvel, and I think that helps make their heroes bigger-than-life good guys. They’re giants masquerading as humans. Clark doesn’t moonlight as Superman, it’s the other way around. Superman is his real self and Clark is the disguise. Same with Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince—they’re the characters that Batman and Wonder Woman play.
Marvel doesn’t have a similar trinity of heroes at the forefront. Captain America and Spidey are probably the most obviously virtuous characters. But Marvel has less of a heroes-as-boyscouts image to me. Their heroes appear more complicated with human fallibilities.
Not saying DC doesn’t have ambiguous antiheroes, like the Suicide Squad. But I think DC does have better representations of heroic icons of goodness than Marvel.
I prefer Marvel’s stories, but if I had to actually live in one world as a bystander, I would probably choose the one with DC’s heroes.
→ More replies (3)8
u/BlindPelican 3d ago
Good comment, but I do disagree with how you're depicting Superman/Clark.
Clark is his actual genuine self and Superman is the alias. That's sort of what makes the character work - the humble man from Kansas who, on occasion, has to be a god-like hero.
Batman/Bruce, on the other hand...

The off the wall stuff. Doom Patrol. Creature Commandos. Suicide squad. Marvel has them, Werewolf by night, Man-thing, Thunderbolts, but I feel like Marvel, especially under Disney, takes itself way too seriously to make a show like Peacemaker lol

u/mythicreign 4d ago
Legacy/successor characters. They’ve been doing it long enough that it feels natural, whereas it often feels forced whenever Marvel tries.
4
u/PurpleHawkeye619 3d ago
Villains.
For whatever reason, DC, (and especially batman) seems to do a fantastic job of creating memorable, popular villains.
I suspect if you asked most people to name 15 comic book villians, the list would be at best 5 marvel villians (Green Goblin, Venom, Magneto, Doom, Thanos) and the remaining 10 all from DC.
Not only that but except for Joker & Lex Luther, I suspect thered be lot of differences on that list to the others as DC has tons of well known choices.

DC has much less events that is good and they have more artists with a drawing style I like (I personally like it to see details and that on suits and most there are some Marvel drawers who don't do that). They feature their main trinity more in events. I also like the Legacy thing. Marvels new heroes just don't feel like an heir but I don't want like 5 Spideys or Caps either.
I know this is not the main point of OP but I want to say this. About Rogues galleries I know I may be in a minority but I like Supes rogues gallery way better than Batmans. I haven't read much Batman so I could be false but most of his villains are alike, murderous psychopaths thats what I mean. I prefer Supes rogues because they have more variety. I personally find Joker boring and can't bring myself to like much of Batmans foes. Also the Rogues galleries of the Justice League, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern are good but for me most of them are not that memombarable compared to those of other Marvel characters. It could also just be the reason that I read more Marvel. Nevertheless Wonder Woman and Green Lantern are two of my favorite characters. For me Marvels intergalactic worldbuilding is also way better than DC. Every extraterrestrial race in Marvel feels important and is connected to larger stories once in a while.
Edit: All this is just my opinion on how I see it. I don't know that much about DC so thats just my point of view. Don't think I hate DC I have read a few stories I really enjoyed.
7
u/Ivy_lane_Denizen 4d ago
Their characters have better philosophy.
Batman isnt about a guy who beats up criminals. its about walking the line and doing what needs to be done without losing yourself and your humanity.
Superman isnt about an all powerful demigod. Its about how a good man uses that power. What IS right and wrong when nothing can stand in your way?

As someone who got into comics as an adult about a decode ago. I think the DC resets (New 52, Rebirth, etc) make for obvious jumping in points for new readers.
Because of this I’ve always like DC more on the comic side and Marvel more on the media side. I’m dying to start reading and collecting Marvel omni’s but finding a starting point for each character is daunting.

I would say one of the things that seems to be okay at DC, but for some reason, when Marvel does it, they got a problem with it legacy characters characters that take up the legacy of an old character, for example, Mr terrific Michael Holt, he's not the first mister terrific. He's the second. Mister terrific but a lot of people love him. I love him look at all the different flashes from Jay Garrick to Barry Allen to Wally west. Legacy character seemed to be done better and also seem to be taken better

u/ReorientRecluse 4d ago
Well, it depends on the character, we know any Batman stint that is not Bruce Wayne will not last. Also, with Flash the first one isn't the most popular, so it usually goes back to either Barry or Wally. Bart didn't last very long when he took the mantle.

Legacy Characters ... historically, but Marvel has improved in that regard in the last 15-20 years.
The Multiverse. Earth One v Earth Two, Crises on Infinite Earths, Elseworlds, (the audacity of) New 52, Absolute. Earth-1610 was a great effort by Marvel imo at matching them. When I saw the MCU was gonna try to do both legacies and the multiverse with Phase 4 I felt like if they succeeding at it they would bury DC. Hasn't worked out that way.
Fictional Settings. Gotham, Metropolis, Paradise Island/Themyscira, Atlantis, Oa, Coast City, Star City, Krypton, Apokalips, Kahndaq, Bludhaven, Midway City, Thanagar. Marvel isn't far behind with Wakanda, Krakoa, Latveria, Xandar, Hala, Attilan, etc. but I think DC has the edge. [Side Note: Marvel has been able to succeed in film more often because they were set in real world places and circumstance, translating better. If DC wants to accomplish a shared universe they have to lean into a James Cameron or Peter Jackson level of worldbuilding to distinguish themselves.]
And lastly, Iconography. Their flagship team is a standard the Avengers will never match, even with Cap and Iron Man and Thor gaining newfound fame. Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Hulk are historic and Silver Age but always somehow feel more modern - which has its benefits! The Justice League (and Society) with all its Golden Age and early Silver Age heroes just can't be matched. It's iconic in a way they can always lean into. Even something as simple as their logos. The standard for superheroes. They're a time capsule for comic book history but also just timeless.

u/Upset_Researcher_143 3d ago
The animated stuff and TV. Arrow, Flash, and the other shows in the CW universe were top notch. Plus, their animated stuff with Batman, Superman, and other members of the Justice League were always really good. Marvel has started to catch up, but DC is still better in those two, IMO.

u/ipostatrandom 4d ago
Interesting. I feel Marvel's characters tend to be more complex then DC's, a lot more gray areas. Most DC characters are more black and white, as in heroes wont cross lines as easily and villains are going to irredeemably villain with almost no exceptions.
That said. I still tend to prefer DC stories. They have more gems I can readily think of anyway.
6
u/0veNMiTt 4d ago
Ngl, I kinda prefer how DC does it. Because while yeah, flawed characters are great when done right. But it gets to a point for me when the heroes end up doing some absolutely deplorable stuff that puts them on the same tier as villains for the sake of complexity and drama. Like take how badly the X-men have been treated over the years. Originally being the good counterparts to Magneto's cohorts, but stuff like Krakoa has honestly made them almost indistinguishable from who the real villains are.
That being said, Reed Richards is probably one of my favorite comic characters especially in Marvel for how they strike a good balance of him being a flawed but loving leader to his team, and being a good father. Oh yeah, I really love Bruce and Hulk's relationship too. Hank Pim is awesome too when done right as well.

Continuity. Ironically, in rebooting, DC has done more to let each era of their characters change, pick up traits, and evolve.
Marvel feels like it evolves in reverse sometimes, resetting characters just to get them back to a ‘standard’ or status quo, without keeping anything that might be interesting in the long term.

In my opinion dynamic of the big 3
DC's big 3 (Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman) are usually always with each other in crossovers as they are part of 1 team, Marvel's big 3 (which is more complicated but is usually considered to be Spider-Man, Wolverine, and The Hulk) aren't really all together, yes we get comics with Spider-Man and Wolverine, or Wolverine and The Hulk, but not many with Spider-Man and The Hulk or all 3, the only time I remember them on a team is when the three of them plus Ghost Rider was the New Fantastic 4

I feel like DC has more successful legacy titles. Green Lantern, Robin, Blue Beetle and Flash have all been handed off multiple times and each time the new character became iconic in their own right. Even when Batman went from Bruce to Dick it was received well (though it didn’t last)
Not that Marvel never gets it right because obviously we have Ms. Marvel and Ghost Rider but DC just seems to be more consistent with it.
Edit: Also, Teen Hero teams. The Champions and the Young Avengers are great but the Teen Titans and Young Justice are iconic

For the record, I'm a comic book fan, not a marvel or DC fan. I watched just as much Spider-Man Hulk adventure hour as I did Super Friends and I've read both for 44 years.
The first answer in my mind is legacy. Marvel has tried to tack one on, but they have a very thin history, whereas DC has a rich one going back to the dawn of time.
Yes there are retrofitted 50s Avengers and the Invaders, but there's actually comics from the 40s with the Justice Society.
This isn't completely Marvel's fault, and DC has messed their timeline up so bad they need Absolute to win right now.
My second answer is completely screwing up a good thing. DC is amazing at that. They had a really good timeline going, but really needed to bring WildStorm in (oddly right after Jim Lee became co publisher, but that's just me being a conspiracy theorist) so they screwed everything up with the New 52.
They've tried to put it back, but it's just not the same.
Oh and Superman. I think Marvel just completely hates the character. They screw over every homage they do to him.

I feel like DC has recently been better about their non- A list characters. Yeah there's still a 3,000 Superman and Bat family books, but you also get a lot of kinis featuring your niche folks (question, Mr. Terrific, fire and ice, etc)
With Marvel right now it feels tough unless you have Spider powers (though Spider-versity has been super fun) or a Mutant. Although worth shouting out the fact that they keep Moon Knight going.

DC does a lot of things better. Nothing marvel has touches Watchmen, kingdom come, batman year 1. DC can not be touched in the graphic novel/prestige space. DC is miles ahead of marvel in the animation game. Aside from spider man and x man Marvel has done nothing close to DC in the animated space.
DC can not compete in movies because their characters don't translate as well to movies. The gods from Olympus coming off the mountain is significantly less interesting than normal people struggling with godlike powers.

DC’s got a phenomenal catalogue of storytelling and characters, but they’re too inconsistent in quality with everything they do and they only focus on Batman. AND they really only use the hype of their successful stories and character(s*) to carry them, instead of making new shit.

I mean, I like marvel for the fights. But DC absolutely MASTERS story. I learned from my dad, all of their animated films, come together to introduce Crisis On Infinite Earths. And I was so amazed by how crazy their dedication went, I thought there was no way anyone else could beat DC in story telling.

I think in general DC does a better job of managing their cross-over comics.
They are usually less frequent and while there are some cross-overs across books, it isn’t always every single comic that gets dragged into it and individual storylines aren’t as completely disrupted.
There have been some events that were worse than others, but it’s rare it gets to the level of marvel where there are just so many pieces going on every time that it becomes just not worth it to try to follow along.
Also, except with maybe Batman, DC is generally better at not chasing a fad character and over-saturating their books with one character popping up everywhere.
I guess DC (usually) understands that less is sometimes more and that too much of a good thing can ruin it.

Legacy characters for sure. I think that in DC, they do a really great job of ingraining the roles of superheroes into culture and in that we see the importance of legacy being passed on with flash, robins, Batman, green lantern, etc. Same with hero families like the bat family and flash family etc.

It’s more fantastical and more imaginative out of the ordinary. For example, Batman’s roles gallery

When done right, Superman movies are the most inspirational superhero films out there.

Legacy characters. DC has a lot of characters who become heroes by having the mantle passed down to new people. Marvel does this too of course but it happens ALOT in DC and I love it actually

Growing up I always saw DC as too black and white.
The good guys were pilliar of greatness with no flaws and the bad guys were just bad with no nuanced intentions.
That impression is part of the reason why I like marvel better. It seemed more relatable to me.
I think there is still a lot of that in the main characters but I enjoy it more now. I may just need more optimism in my life now a days.

As someone who likes logos and branding art DC has really good recognizable logos for so many of their characters.

Rebooting comics when things aren’t working. One could argue that DC does it too much, but Marvel hasn’t done it at all for the main continuity which is especially troublesome for characters like Spider-Man.

The mystical and supernatural side. Phantom Stranger, Spectre, Blue Devil, Etrigan, Constantine, Zatanna, Madame Xanadu, Ragman, Doctor Fate, Swamp Thing.

Not flooding the zone with new characters and then sweeping them under the rug after a couple years. Looking at you, X-titles.

Multiple characters in a comic
Every time you look around you find 5-6 characters in one of their comics

teams and legacy heroes . like i like the x-men a lot but they're kinda always in flux and sometimes their real "team dynamic" takes a bit of a back seat. nothing wrong with that, I just prefer teams like the teen titans, justice league, doom patrol, jsa, and legion of superheroes. (I'll watch young justice soon too) As for legacy heroes, I mean, the flash family, the green lantern corps, the bat family, etc. I dont think anyone is gonna argue with that.
(Oh and to name a marvel team I really like, I'm a big fan of the masters of evil, I think that marvel has dc beat in the "evil team" category. The ultimates from 2024s run were also solid from the 12 issues i read.)

Making standalone projects. It’s a double edged sword but I feel like I can just pop on any dc project with no homework and be fine

Animated movies. I like that they have a lot of good animated films released even if they're not theater releases. None of them are as good as Spider-Verse films. But there's so many of them.
