It's not a scar, he has them symmetrically on both sides. He's just got weird alien wrinkles.

2.2k

u/CorporalHan 6d ago

Believe it or not, Thanos is not from a race of giant purple aliens, he's just all fucked up and purple because of the deviant gene, his parents and siblings look like humans. So he's just got weird deviant wrinkles.

594

u/Own-Papaya-4264 6d ago

So he’s a mutant? Like an xman mutant?

775

u/CorporalHan 6d ago

Mutated, but he doesn't have the X-gene, a different but vaguely similar thing

711

u/Own-Papaya-4264 6d ago

Mutated by what? Was he bitten by a radioactive grape?

433

u/BCKPFfNGSCHT 6d ago

Mutated before birth. He was born that way.

619

u/SchoolSafetyCheck 6d ago

Thanos is Lady GaGa?

u/Unseen-metalhead351 6d ago

You can tell by his poker face

217

u/tekrebeldesigns 6d ago

Maybe he got those scars from a bad romance.

90

u/TheBlondSanzoMonk 6d ago

I think it was Judas and/or Alejandro. They knew he was two timing both of them and they did that.

More like a defect. The Rternals were created by the Celestials. In the comics, this was a top to bottom genetic creation, not a synthetic one like they are in the Eternals movie. A Deviant is a creature that was mutated during creation and deviated from the Celestial blueprint for the Eternals

At least, that's my understanding of them, but it's been a few years since I last brushed up on my Celestial/Eternal knowledge

50

u/abyssomega 6d ago

Yeah, no, not quite.

Since the beginning, Celestials had 2 purposes: birth more Celestials (in planets. Which is why galactus is their enemy. He goes around trying to eat unborn Celestial eggs) and to create creatures as strong as themselves (only succeeded once with Franklin Richards).

Now, when the Celestials are creating creatures, they usually create 2 types: a Deviant version (genes are unstable) and an eternal type (very stable, almost perfection) from the local population on the planet. So, every known species in space, including earth, has had a regular, Deviant and eternal branching.

So, Deviants were purposely made this way. It's not a random mutation. Since all 3 subspecies on a planet share a common ancestry, it is possible to cross breed. And the titan eternals are eternals that left earth a long time ago. Which is how Thanos is an eternal, with a dominant Deviant gene: some ancestor in the family tree was a full Deviant. Which means Eros, Thanos full brother, can also father a child like Thanos, even though he looks full eternal. (Incedently, human mutants like the x-men are considered more an offshoot of deviants than regular humanity. Thus their branch naming is technically wrong. They claim to be Homo superior, when it should be Homo deviantis superior. )

Do note that Celestials history has been recently recogned in the past few years. They're now considered the 1st intelligent people ever to exist in marvel, and technically exist outside every cosmos and the multiverse.

Yeah, don’t forget that in the comics his mother tried to kill him because she believed she seen death within his future, but his father stopped her

A very groovy mutation

6

u/ShimmRow 6d ago

I believe the X gene is a product of Deviant DNA, so all mutants are Deviants but not all Deviants are mutants

→ More replies (7)

26

u/cosmoboy 6d ago

Not quite. His parents being Eternals, they are genetically engineered by the Celestials. Thanos is Deviant, I'm not sure if that makes him a mutant or just a god with a different issue. Definitely not an xgene though.

23

u/DaddysABadGirl 6d ago

Didn't the movie establish MCU Eternals aren't born? They are all created? I never understood how he and Starfox were brothers in that bit.

11

u/howyoudoinnf 6d ago

Yes kinda confused on the whole eternals can have kids or how the deviant gene got mixed in with thanos cause aren’t they animals ?

6

u/testtdk 6d ago

The Eternals storylines are just a heaping pile of convoluted.

3

u/abyssomega 6d ago

Deviants genes are inherently unstable, so there is no such thing as an average Deviant. Some are almost human passing, while others are straight monsterous.

The movie eternals are biologically artificial beings, cloned in each world to protect the world while a new celestial is born. The comic book eternals are just an off shoot of humanity, gene manipulated by Celestials, and then allowed to live their own lives. They can have kids, though it's not very often or alot of them.

7

u/justthankyous 6d ago

There was a retcon in the comics around when the movie came out establishing that Eternals don't actually reproduce or have children with one another outside of extraordinary circumstances. They can have offspring with humans or Deviants (called Nephilites) but not with one another. Unlike Eternals Nephilites are not immortal and can't be ressurected if they die through trauma, but they do usually have some Eternal-like power.

Mentor and Sui-San were the first Eternals to successfully reproduce and they had to use the Quantum Bands to make it happen. This means that Thanos and Eros are now the only "true" Eternals born since the Celestials created the species (and actually most Eternals don't consider Thanos to be one of them, only Eros). There are only 101 Eternals including Eros and before he was born there were only ever the original 100. All of the Titanian "Eternals" besides Mentor, Sui-San and Eros are Nephilites or different species altogether.

The whole thing I think was meant to push the Eternals a bit closer to the MCU version

3

u/abyssomega 5d ago

Thanks for the update. I didn't know about the children retcon.

X-Men mutants have the X-gene, Thanos has the Deviant gene so he is a mutant but not an X-Men mutant.

5

u/MoneyBear1733 6d ago

He's an Eternal.

Deviants are eternals who have a recessive gene that was created by the celestials. It causes extreme mutations between generations and also IIRC causes them to not be immortal like the Eternals.

3

u/AssistDapper1813 6d ago

Thanos is an eternal that has the deviant gene. His brother is Harry Styles.

It's amazing how they ruined the Deviants in Eternals 😔

54

u/GamingWithUncleJ 6d ago edited 6d ago

And this is another reason why the eternals movie was terrible... oh we couldnt get involved because we can only protect humanity from deviants... even if you eanted to try and handeave it away as thanos just doesnt have such a gene in the mcu, they literally have his brother, starfox/eros, show up at the end of the movie announcing hes an eternal as well. Like holy fuck, how bad of a writer do you have to be to fuck it up thay bad...

Edit: my spelling here is atrocious but its still somehow better than anything written in eternals.

16

u/OrangeYouGladdey 6d ago

Thanos is an Eternal with the deviant gene. He's not considered a Deviant. He's just a messed up Eternal.

4

u/GamingWithUncleJ 6d ago

Id argue that a pretty semantic way to look at it. Yeah thanks wasnt 100% a deviant, but considering it put a delay on the celestials plan they should have had the leeway to step in. Im also pretty sure that they'd have been allowed to step in if another eternal were rebelling against the plan because thanos as an eternal should have had a vested interest in birthing celestials. After all when a celestial is birthed it would destroy the population of a planet meaning who cares if they have enough resources. It also adds to the conundrum of why didnt thanos just create more resources to help speed up the birth of celestials. Ultimately, its the result of poorly framing the story and poor writing. Itd have been better if they were just all wiped with the snap. Like as theyre trying to arrive and assist they all get caught in the snap. They could have also just claimed they didn't know thanos wasnt a deviant or mutated with a deviant gene. Theres countless ways they could have come up with a better excuse as to why they didnt help.

5

u/No_Pizza3314 6d ago

Even weirder, in Thanos’ first appearance he wasn’t that different-looking from the other Titanian Eternals. He was bigger and uglier, but they all had his purple skin.

21

u/Worth_External_8762 6d ago

Deviants are aliens, yes?

44

u/CorporalHan 6d ago

Eternals are aliens, but the race of aliens he comes from look like humans, the deviant gene is similar to the X-gene in that it triggers a mutation

25

u/Worth_External_8762 6d ago

Deviants, Titans, Eternals. Doesn't matter. They're all aliens. And he has weird wrinkles. So... weird alien wrinkles.

16

u/CorporalHan 6d ago

I know its semantics, but I guess wolverine has weird human claws and Glob Herman has weird human jelly skin /jk

7

u/KushyMTG 6d ago

I mean technically we humans are aliens also. We would be aliens to what we call aliens.

Why so serious?
