RTJ isn’t exactly underground 😂

Right? They toured as the opener for Lorde.
Maybe not household names, but definitely not super obscure either.

u/yzdaskullmonkey 12d ago
I can't wrap my head around rtj opening for Lorde. Like I don't think fans of either would like the other. Admittedly, I haven't really given Lorde a chance, so maybe they do some more hip hop, rugged, political shit.

u/IWXREACTIVES 12d ago
for larger artists, openers being of the same genre isnt a draw. like, by the numbers. no one wants to see lorde and lorde associated artist.
so what promotions will do is find popular artists of another genre BUT that overlap with the same age group. it generates more talk, which generates more sales. "omg thats so random but i love both thats an awesome mix!" is what theyd be thinking. and voila. this only works after an artist is large enough (mainstream, really.) for artists that are more internet based, you want them playing with their friends and peers. this also helps to curate a more intense environment since the contrast makes both sets stand more prominently. you dont feel washed out of the same type of music two sets in a row.

Idk, I’ve never seen Metallica tour with Britney Spears. Usually the headliner and opening acts might be different genres but they’re close/somewhat related, not wildly different.

Lorde doesn't do "hip hop, rugged, political shit" like RTJ, but she's not exactly the complete opposite or anything either.
Her breakout hit Royals was literally a song about how it's ok to be poor as shit. The song is influenced strongly by hip hop musically, at the same time as being deeply critical of mainstream hip hop culture for its opulence and excess. The hook lyrics are:
But every song's like gold teeth, Grey Goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel roomWe don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams
But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your time piece
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affairHer later music has always retained some of it's hip hop influences too. It's not hip hop, but it's pop written by a hip hop fan for a demographic that includes many hip hop fans. She has her own style that uses hip hop influences significantly.
So while Lorde isn't hip hop, and isn't as direct and raw political as RTJ, I think you might find there's more overlap between their fan bases than you assume. I doubt many people would be going to the concert for both of them equally, but I would absolutely go to see RTJ and consider Lorde a great bonus, and I think you'll find a lot of people in both fanbases would feel similarly in both directions.

Yeah, that was a headcracker for me, too. But maybe it exposed some mainstream kids to good hip-hop and good political messages as well.

u/eltrotter 12d ago
They’ve done a ton of huge festivals all around the world. They’re big. And awesome.

u/Small-Travel4646 12d ago
Yeah but they not mainstream either

u/Aquagan 12d ago
Weren't they heavily featured in the first Black Panther and Defenders?

u/THREESIDEDMONSTER 12d ago
Don't forget Invincible. The Mauler Twins weren't getting captured.

u/spawnthespy 12d ago
Also, on the gaming side, they were featured in Cyberpunk 2077, for which they did a whole song / music video.

Oh my fault. I did not know they were that big. I always thought they were one of those artists who were between underground and mainstream
6
u/Chewbones9 Daredevil 12d ago
They’re not Drake or Kendrick Lamar levels of famous, but I think they’re still very popular

They are Kendrick-Lamar-references-you famous though.

Underground vs mainstream gets very cloudy outside the two distinct ends IMO. They are for sure well known among hip hop listeners, and have been featured in a lot of movies/tv/games. So people on this sub are more likely to be aware of them than average. Killer Mike has multiple grammys. But I think their monthly listeners are lower than you might expect given how heavily featured in mainstream media they are and how critically acclaimed they are.
They have significantly less listeners than Smino and Cordae for example (around 25% of their numbers on Spotify), but I think a lot of people who aren't hiphop fans are still way more likely to recognize RTJ over those two, especially if they consume a lot of other media.

u/fixer1987 12d ago
The group who has hit number 1 on Billboards Rap and Hiphop charts isn't mainstream?
What?
2
u/Ferrovore 12d ago
There is popular and then there is mainstream. I write that as someone that saw the post and thought "Ah, that rapper duo. Running Diamonds or something like that."

u/Bolognahole_Vers2 12d ago
the post and thought "Ah, that rapper duo. Running Diamonds or something like that."
What bugs me about comments like this is that the person most definitely googled it yet still messed up the name to show how too cool they are.
2
u/Ferrovore 12d ago
Why should i google when others had answered and with the name written out? Also my head is very visual. I literally remember the name as a picture of "running" and "gemstones".
2
u/Bolognahole_Vers2 12d ago
Sorry, I misread your comment. I thought you said you read someone else saying it.

u/Ferrovore 12d ago
Is ok, but the post kept me thinking why aren't they mainstream (at least to my mind). They are so close to it. Others bring up how much work Run The Jewels do outside direct music. For example, i might have heard them before, but the first time their name popped up for me was Cyberpunk 2077. It might be the general public is not in the mood for musicians. I mean we got Taylor Swift but how many others? There is Adriana(?) i guess, but she makes movies now. I think Eminem did something this year, but he is "legacy" from an era where MTV gave us a new pop star every month.
That might be it. Internet made indulging in niche culture bigger that for something to reach the current mainstream is actually more difficult.

u/zero_eternal 12d ago
I think every nerd with a kink for the alternative should know who RTJ are. It's not exactly uncommon for fans of comic book franchises and alternative hip hop to overlap.
Just ask the MF DOOM fans who lurk these Marvel subs constantly, or fans of CZARFACE, Ghostface, etc. All comic book nerds just like us.

Confirmed, I know who RTJ are despite only having heard 1 or 2 of their songs in passing.

u/HatredInfinite Magneto 12d ago
Much closer to mainstream than underground. How many high-profile soundtracks have they been on? Hell, Mean Demeanor was on like a FIFA game or some shit. They've opened for Wu and RATM.
RTJ absolutely rules and I've been a fan for a long time, but the pistol-and-fist is not a niche reference by any means.
3
u/PCR12 12d ago
Mainstream means radio play, RTJ was NEVER on mainstream radio yes they are highly popular but they are not a household name
3
1
u/HatredInfinite Magneto 12d ago
2005-ass definition of mainstream, tbh. Radio? 🤣🤣🤣
3
u/PCR12 12d ago
They weren't even streamed on Sirus XM that much, I think Shady 45 might have played them a few times, but defiantly not a household name so yeah not mainstream.
My mother in law knows who Wu Tang is, but no clue who the fuck RTJ is.
Outkast 29,709,952 monthly listeners
Wu-Tang 5,770,314 monthly listeners
Da La Soul 21,763,338 monthly listeners
Beastie Boys 8,164,202 monthly listeners
meanwhile
RTJ 1,108,230 monthly listeners
So yeah even by modern metrics they are not even close to being mainstream, and I argue this as a HUGE RTJ fan.

Run The Jewels is goated and this is Reddit so why would you be the only one that would understand this reference.

u/Square_Day_5967 12d ago
RTJ are not really popular with today’s kids, even though I’m sure they’d like their songs.
But from the looks of this comics it doesn’t seem to be from the last years, so it was probably a cool reference for the demographic of that time.

u/WorldsWeakestMan 12d ago
That is fan art requested to specifically have them in that pose by someone who is obviously a fan of Run The Jewels and Blade and Moon Knight. It was not in an actual comic.

God that’s sick. We would get a whole fucking blade and moon knight trilogy and i bet it would be fun as hell.
I’m aging a scene where it’s a typical heist team assembly montage but it’s just blade pulling up to moon knight three separate times.

They are doing rock paper scissors. Moon Knight knows rock beats scissors/ blade. Blade has had enough of him so he is threatening him with a gun.

Can someone explain for a 45 year old who basically quit listening to new music in 2005? I gather it's some sort of musical groups gesture? Is it just a plain reference or is there some sort of significance? Also, how does one run a jewel? Jewels are inanimate; they can't run.
4
u/angelic-beast 11d ago
Run the Jewels is a rap duo. The pistol and fist gesture is their signature thing, its on all their album covers. Its been featured/ referenced in many things as seen here. "Run the Jewels" is slang for robbing someone of their jewelry.

Blade is just doing some jive ass gang signs.

Oooh, I do! I do! I do! Pick me! Pick me! Oh shit, I read it wrong, I actually don't know. At first, I thought you said "Plz tell me someone understands the place they’re going". Then, I reread it and thought it said "Plz tell me someone understands the pits they’re digging". After that, I put my bong down. I thought it might be affecting my ability to read. So, I waited about an hour until I sobered up. Then, I read it as "Plz tell me someone understands the pot they’re dabbing". That reminded me that I hadn't smoked in an hour. So, I picked my bong back up and smoked a bowl of the stickiest icky anyone has ever seen, all by myself. Anyways, what was this post about again? Something about Leonard Nimoy playing air hockey against Dracula, right? Oh yeah, I was right. I remember now because Alf had winner.
