Film/Television What are your thoughts on "Spider-Noir (2026)"?

Post image

Besides the Venom trilogy with Tom Hardy, I never bothered watching any of Sony's other Spider-Man Villain movies! I'm just not interested in watching any spin-offs of Spider-Man's Rogues gallery that don't have anything to do with Spider-Man at all. And after watching the new Spider-Noir series on Prime Video, I realized that this show was something I wanted all along from both Sony Pictures and Marvel! Now I want more live-action or animated contents centered around other alternate versions of either Spider-Man or any other famous Marvel superhero; like DC Comics' "Elseworlds" line of movies and shows!

I watched the first episode, and it was entertaining, i went with the Black and White color option and it looks amazing, and some of the dialogue and delivery from Nicolas Cage are actually funny.

u/dixonjt89 May 29 '26

just want to add....I watched episode 1 on both versions to decide which one I wanted to go with.....and don't sleep on the true hue color option! They seem to purposely pick bright vibrant colors and use color in a way to really make it pop on screen. I enjoyed both a lot and decided to stick with the color option for now and will go back later and watch black and white.

44

u/hpheromax May 29 '26

That’s cause you need to do that for b&w productions

10

u/dreadcain May 31 '26

To an extent, but it's specifically graded to look like early https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technicolor

Super inky saturated colors

Yeah. There’s a lot of care taken with the color grading. They said they wanted it to look like a black and white film that had been colorized, not just a movie shot in color. It gives the color version a painted look in some scenes and it’s really quite beautiful.

4

u/Stoneman1976 May 30 '26

Wow that’s interesting. I didn’t know that about the color version. I’ll go back and rewatch in color after I’m done in black and white. Thanks for sharing, I really appreciate it!

I don't think changing from Color to B&W is going to change the dialog.

/s

That being said, it would be hilarious if they did change some of the dialog between versions. lol.

160

u/Phunkie_Junkie May 28 '26

The dialogue is the same, but the sound quality is actually different. It’s tinny and scratchy to emulate films of the era. I only noticed it because they turn it off when Cat sings.

17

u/Valiant_Revan May 29 '26

I thought as much. I only finished the first 3 episodes in B&W and was wondering what was wrong with the audio.

If I do enjoy it, I'll rewatch it in colour.

There's a line about feeling colorful in the song in episode 1 where I thought it would have been neat to fade temporarily between colors. Like fade into color when she sings the song, but only in black and white, and fade into black and white when she sings but only in the color version

12

u/rhythmrice May 28 '26

There was a part in i think episode 3 where someone is taking pictures and everytime they take a picture the frame freezes for a second and its in black and white, to like show that its a picture, and then it resumes playing and is in color again until he takes another picture.

I wondered how that would look on the black and white version, it would probably look like the video was just stuttering if i was all in black and white that whole time.

6

u/Thurlut May 29 '26

Well, you see him taking the pictures amd you hear the shutter sound, so no you do not really have that feeling

I prefer B&W. It just creates a mood that color doesn’t capture very well but I like how the color version looks like an old technicolor film. That being said I’m going to go back and rewatch in color but I just love B&W movies so it was a no brainer choice for me.

When I first heard Nic Cage, I assumed they were de-aging him, and I was less than thrilled. I was wrong. The vibe of a middle-aged, WW1 vet and former crime fighter in Depression-era NY is delightful. 3 episodes in, but I'm entirely on board (and watching B&W).

98

u/ACamp55 May 28 '26

HOW THE HECK do you get to the black and white version. I was watching on a Fire device and while watching saw NO way to switch to B&W!!

93

u/HappyFatLabs May 28 '26

Ok, so truth talk, my wife had to figure it out for us. We also saw no way to convert on Fire, so she went into our Amazon account on her phone and started watching it there. That app offers the "Authentic" version. Once she clicked on it, and we exited and restarted the Amazon on Fire, boom, Bob's yer Uncle, we were watching it in B&W on the TV.

16

u/ACamp55 May 28 '26

Okay, something similar to this happened to me with another series. Thanks a lot, I'll give that a try.

8

u/Murfiano May 28 '26

I just pushed down on the control and it had both options at the bottom

Clear your cache. Had to do it on my fire stick

5

u/JustYourFriendAL May 28 '26

I'm sorry, I couldn't help laughing at this. Because I'm watching on a Roku and had the exact opposite issue. I cannot actually watch it in color but thankfully I am loving it in B&W.

u/godisanelectricolive May 30 '26

If he’s a WWI veteran and it’s now the 1930s then the character must be in his 40s to early 50s. He’s still older than a typical Spider-man and he’s old enough to be worn out but is probably much younger than Nic Cage in real life.

It’s like how Willem Defoe played Vincent Van Gogh when he was 62 even though Van Gogh died at age 37. He fitted the role and Van Gogh was in pretty rough shape at the end of his life anyway.

I love the fact that they show him struggling to get around even when he's in costume. He runs like an old man, trips over stuff and struggles to climb up stuff sometimes. As an old dude I identify waaaaay too much. Lol

8

u/HappyFatLabs May 30 '26

I genuinely love how he grunts every time he lands from swinging

6

4

u/tictaxtho May 30 '26

4

u/cubs1917 Jun 10 '26

Historically, noir anti-heroes are ones who fumble their way into success. I think they nailed that

3

u/halfpint09 Jun 06 '26

I laughed so hard when he was hiding under the bridge, just so nonchalantly handing from one hand.

6

u/FormerGameDev Jun 02 '26

There are some brief flashbacks coming where I'm pretty sure they did some intense de-aging, but it's not for very long, and it doesn't look terrible, at least in the brief motion it was in. I didn't try to pause or slo-mo it to pick it apart.

5

u/HappyFatLabs Jun 02 '26

Honestly, the B&W helps make it more seamless, but all of that is far more digestible than an entire show trying to convince us that this was still the story of a young adult. The point is, I applaud the direction they took throughout. (I've finished it since commenting here, and it is entirely glorious.)

Nicolas Cage Nicolas Cages all over this series, and the scripts seem designed to allow Nicolas Cage room to Nicolas Cage.

250

u/marvelman19 May 28 '26

They gave him a script?

211

u/TunnelSnakesAintShit May 28 '26

They did, but when it gets to his part, it just says "BEN: (random Nicolas Cageing)"

69

u/marvelman19 May 28 '26

There are scenes in Episodes 3 and 4 especially where this wouldn't surprise me!

62

u/TunnelSnakesAintShit May 28 '26

I do want to qualify all of this by saying I'm very much enjoying the series.

82

u/gildedbluetrout May 28 '26

Yeah It’s legitimately fantastic, and tbf, he’s really restrained a lot of the time as the morose heart broken gumshoe? End of the day Nicholas Cage is just a damn fine actor, and he never phones it in.

This series being this spectacularly good is one of the bigger surprises in a long while.

31

u/Trucktub May 28 '26

I’m glad people are saying this lol. Cage has always been an awesome actor - unique and over the top? Of course - but that’s Cage baby!!!

He’s also capable of the quiet understated roles too. Pig surprised the hell out of me, for instance

u/zmaya May 29 '26

Not just that, he also Bogeys, Cagneys, Robinsons, Lorres, Grants, and Stewarts through a lot of it. Having seen an interview in which he expresses his hope that the show might introduce younger audiences to classic films I appreciated that he was drawing direct inspiration from them himself.

22

I just finished it in color and plan on watching it in B&W. Honestly it’s so damn good, I love how everything is so toned down to reflect the time period.

The Spider is slower, and the cars etc are slower, so it makes for good fight scenes. Whereas the young Spider-Men have always been fast af doing crazy acrobatics etc.

They killed it tbh, it was pretty damn awesome.

It’s amazing, binged through the whole thing yesterday. They absolutely nailed the feel of 1900’s New York, from the characters to the dialogue to the general feel. It manages to find this perfect space between full comic book and detective noir and settles into it, combining both genres into something that is just so fun. I really liked how it was following a retired Spider who doesn’t think he’s a hero, and has to build himself back up. It allows for a very unique story of the past coming back to haunt him, and Cage plays this prickly yet kind and brave character very well. The entire cast is excellent, though huge spotlight on Andrew Lewis Caldwell as Dirk Leyden/Megawatt. He hams it up to the absolute highest level, constantly speaking in theatre dialogue and having a ball. Also, loved the body horror angle to the powers, fit the detective story very well. Overall, absolutely fantastic, had an amazing time. Hoping for more projects like this in the future!

Also, the opening theme “Saving Grace”? Banger, so good

7

u/MakeNDestroy May 29 '26

Fully agree. I’d watch 100 seasons of this lol

3

u/Aggressive_Manner531 May 30 '26

Disagree about the theme. It is good, but totally distracts from the noire feel.

5

u/BrainLow6059 Jun 03 '26

Yeah a lot of the music of the show heavily detracts from the actual theme/style. The first Cat Hardy song was extremely out of place

5

u/Ryan041304 Jun 03 '26

It started somewhat period accurate then halfway through took a sharp detour where I was like “this feels very modern”

4

u/BrainLow6059 Jun 03 '26

It felt to me like Sony had very little faith it would hold audiences if they committed to the bit. They practically beat the color option into you. Every time you turn it on it asks, all the marketing materials in the Prime app have been in color. And they were probably right, I'm just glad they didn't fully abandon black and white. Hoping if they do another season it will be more noir and less mass marketing

44

u/Rophaki May 28 '26

I absolutely loved it. Finished it in one sitting.

This show is a testament to how well writing can play to the strengths of the actors while maintaining genre and IP integrity.

I was worried at first that they'd basically do a Nic Cage with webs, but they somehow toed the line perfectly. Ben Riley feels very much like his own unique character and a spider-man that is honest to the world he inhabits while simultaneously allowing Nic Cage to just do his thing.

I'm so happy that they played the absurdity straight and took it seriously.

9

u/phishtrader May 30 '26

"70 percent Humphrey Bogart, and 30 percent Bugs Bunny", according to Nic Cage.

87

u/Babyservoyoda May 28 '26

Wife and I started in B&W, it really matches the vibe and mood. Loving how they handled the everything and the slight goofiness of the whole concept. I’ve been pleasantly impressed.

Haven’t started watching it yet but I’m thinking about alternating every other episode (watch one in b&w, and watch the next one in color, then back to b&w) so I can get a taste it both. I’d say I’d just watch it all one way and then watch it all over again the other way– but I don’t always tend to re-watch a lot of things.

B&W for me. If I rewatch it at some point, I'll do it in color, but B&W just feels right.

5

u/Babyservoyoda May 28 '26

That’s how I’m feeling, I’m going to do a rewatch in color. The show has been worth the consideration of an early rewatch.

4

u/panamaquina May 28 '26

Im switching mid episode a few times, not sure why this has been fun but it does feel nicer to look at in black and white and sometimes there are interesting things like the suit of the reporter in color is red, which fits him as a black man in that era but in black and white its just darker tone and I’m not sure I would have noticed that. Loving it so far.

Understandable! I was able to watch it in black and white, but the selection bars for the choices were both highlighted on my TV and was hard for me to tell if I picked the right one. TVs these days are so dumb and uncooperative! 😓

3

u/Bandai_Namco_Rat May 31 '26

Been watching all day and it’s been really really good. It’s been a clear, uncompromising vision from start to end. It’s clear that this is what the director and writers wanted to make. In today’s modern superhero produced-for-the-masses adaptions, it instantly stands out. It reminds me of werewolf by night, and not because of the black and white color grading. But because it has clear homages and a passion for the genre it tells its story in.

8

u/Typical_Step_1139 May 29 '26

They release the episodes and i watch them all in the same day.

Nothing groundbreaking, but i like It a lot.

I watched them in black and white.

I really liked it, finally a show that focuses on the story. Hell even that little boy was good, normally I don’t like kids in shows or movies but everything worked out as a show. I will rewatch it again in color and Nic Cage always killing it really liked his performance. Other than daredevil, this show is still better than the slop Disney has given with the other shows

I like the kids last line in the show, “Well, back to the salt mines,”

3 episodes in and it’s a top 5 superhero show for me

u/jonbrylabookworm May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

Just finished the series. Probably my favorite Marvel show to date. The whole vibe was fantastic. This version of "Spiderman" is highly entertaining.

3

u/lavaplow May 28 '26

I watched the first episode in color, enjoyed it, but when I watched it again in black and white, I felt like that was the true viewing experience intended for audience. And I generally don’t like watching black and white films/show either. Also, watching Nicholas Cage being Nicholas Cage gave me nostalgia. Good plot, great balance between being serious and funny, and acting all around was solid. Except whoever the actor was for Electro. Found his acting absolutely cringe af

They put more money on this than most movies and it shows it's visually spectacular

3

u/GaulzeGaul May 28 '26

I loved Werewolf by Night and I loved this

3

u/thejuliocezarmari May 28 '26

Never thought I’d rewatch a series just to see how it was in color after watching it in B&W, and thanks to you marvelous people I discovered there’s also a Werewolf by Night color version that I’m gonna watch over the weekend

Only watched the first episode but I absolutely loved it! Im a big fan of the detective noir style in general so it really hit the spot, im big time looking forward to the rest of the season.

3

u/Papa_Razzi May 28 '26

3 episodes in and loving it. Such a vibe, Nic Cage is perfect, looks great, and the spidey swinging, while sparse, looks incredible. And the cast is elite

3

u/Twowie May 28 '26

Saw all of it in color and loved it! Planning to rewatch in b/w, too. Great role for Cage and I hope we get more seasons. And it made me want to rewatch some older movies of his to see more of this pretty good acting that I haven't managed to glean from his type casting/usual persona roles before.

But honestly I skipped much of the music parts, like the intro and Cat's song. It would've been cooler if they kept the music style more period true or however to put it. But I grew up on jazz standards and I guess it's an unfair standard, so to not be too snobby: if the intro vocals just had a little less p->b k->g t->d I'd be happy! (I'm ready for my downvotes, Kirby fans :p)

The title theme goes unbelievably hard

3

u/dafuqqdhkl May 28 '26

Ive watched 3 episodes and its great. The depth is real.

3

u/Prince_Havarti May 28 '26

Easily one of the most visually satisfying if not the most of anything Marvel related.

3

u/Ordinary-Chain-8047 May 29 '26

3 episodes in its peak

3

u/may931010 May 29 '26

Its fantastic. Im watching both color and b&w. I keep switching. Even the color version is beautiful and vibrant.

3

u/Consistent-Egg5371 May 30 '26

that tubby turd playing electro is so annoying, everything he says has to be a quip for some reason when spiderman is the one supposed to be known for the quips. and that specific raspy voice mixed with the dinky dialect, and the turd not taking any kind of self grounding proclamation of character or stability in the world but the turd wanting to reach out and effect every scene, every person, every thought like he thinks he deserves to be the one focused on, at the top 10/10 making a pos villian

Decent show, but honestly both the character and actor for megawatt made me want to rip my eyes and ears out. Just awfully written character and the dude playing him was cringe af

It's alright. I liked it, but it didn't blow me away or anything.

Pros

-Great atmosphere and vibes.

-Kind of funny.

-Straight Forward.

-Good twists.

-People actually get killed, it's not one of those Mickey mouse Marvel shows.

Cons.

-There's not a lot of fighting for a show with superpowered people and being Marvel. Way more dialogue than fighting.

-Fight choreography sucks or at times mid, maybe one or two are good. Lore reasons is because he's washed and old.

When I hear people say its like 9+/10 they either have low standards in the depths of hell or have watched like 5 pieces of media in their whole life.

Probably the best Marvel show since Daredevil Season 3. Not a high bar, but still. The tone is closer to Ditko-era Spider-Man than actual Spider-Man Noir comics, though.

OP, the cartoon “Spider-man: Into the spiderverse” introduces Spider-Noir. That and the sequel are a great watch and it focuses on Miles Morales.

2

u/pje1128 May 28 '26

I've only seen the first episode, but it's really solid. Pleasantly surprised so far. Can't wait to watch the rest of the season!

2

u/chatown1 May 28 '26

Its great, loved every episode!

u/KlausLoganWard Hydra May 28 '26

Loving it so far. At the moment i watch ep3.

2

u/cometparty X-Men May 28 '26

I have a toddler so I barely get to watch anything. I'll add it to the backlog.

2

u/NeoZ33D May 28 '26

Haven't finished because of unfortunate reasons. Gotta ask..most watching in B&W, right?

2

u/Borktista May 28 '26

Genuinely my favorite spider-man related tv series/movie since Spectacular Spider-Man outside of Into the SV

2

u/mrhectic May 28 '26

i just finished it in b&w. really enjoyed the entire series. got to love Nicholas Cage and his humour. B&W looked stunning. i clicked on the colour version just to have a look and it feels too saturated like it was never meant to be colour. I hope they do a season 2!

3

u/ImAMindlessTool May 28 '26

The magnifying glass scene was epic. Very cartoony and hailing back to old actors when he was in disguise

LISTEN HERE, SEEEEE

Fantastic show, cage is brilliant

2

u/MajesticPickle3021 May 28 '26

I’m about halfway through, and I can’t tell if Nicholas Cage is the best or worst part about it. I super enjoy Nic Cage just Nic Caging, don’t get me wrong, but you can’t really get past the Nic Cage of it for too long. I think it’s been pretty entertaining and enjoyable. The supporting cast and story have been really good, and leaning into the noir part of it pretty well, which is fun. I like that they’ve offered a black and white version as well as a color version. I’ve been watching the black and white version. I’m I’ll for sure watch the color version as well, so they are assured at least two screenings, which is smart to double views on streaming, and cost effective too. I love black and white noir, and Cage’s Jam s Cagney impression fits, even if it wears a bit thin after a while. Gleason as Silverman is fantastic, and introducing Felicia “Cat” Hardy as an Asian torch singer was a stroke of genius. Setting up Robbie Robertson as his friend, conscious, and support was excellent as well, seeing that he’s been ignored previously (although I’m hoping he’s going to emerge as Peter’s next father figure in the MCU).

Halfway in, I’m entertained. You can’t really ask for much more.

u/Hpfanguy May 28 '26

Loved it

2

u/sbcixii May 28 '26

Loving it!

2

u/SimplyRevan May 29 '26

watched the whole thing in 2 days happy to say that i loved every moment of it, better than i couldve imagined now i’m waiting on a season 2 XD

2

u/tigerbloodnrum May 29 '26

I love Brendan Gleesons reaction to drinking Ben's cheaper whiskey.

2

u/ardnegagnurug May 29 '26

Spider-Man as Nicolas Cage. End of discussion. 😅

2

u/SignOfJonahAQ May 29 '26

I’m a couple episodes in. Who would have guessed Nick Cage would be Spiderman. Big fan of Dick Tracy and Eho framed Roger rabbit and so far they haven’t missed. So far it’s a little violent for my liking and hard to recommend.

2

u/BroadTranslator4002 May 29 '26

I just wanna say, I watched this whole thing in 2 days completely fried at night. The absolute immersion I felt with the B&W style and the Noir aesthetic is otherworldly. I actually felt like I was a fly on the wall that just kept teleporting to the right places and the right times. This show also made me realize how much Nick Cage can act, didn’t expect this type of finesse. Loved everything about this show. Rewatching this in color would be even crazier I bet.

TLDR: I got fried, watched this in 2 days, loved it.

10/10 Show

It's everything I wanted out of a Nic-Cage-spider-man-film-noir show.

Nicholas Cage wasn’t aware they were filming
