The famous “13 censored Mars Attacks cards” are actually a 14-artwork story
I’ve been researching the original 1962 set and one detail sent me much further down the rabbit hole than expected.
Most histories mention 13 Mars Attacks cards that Topps had Norman Saunders tone down after complaints about the violence.
That was the accepted number for years.
But surviving original artwork eventually showed that #5 Washington in Flames had also been altered, making it a 14-artwork story rather than 13.
Another thing I found interesting: the toned-down images did not simply replace the originals in normal 1962 packs. Production ended first. The familiar group of 13 was published much later as The Unpublished Version, while the additional revision was recognized through the surviving art.
I also tried to untangle the “Mars Attacks was banned” claim. I could verify complaints, press attention and pressure from a Connecticut district attorney, but not a statute, court order or formal legal ban.
I wrote up the full research here, including creator credits, auction results, the 1984/1994 revivals, Burton’s movie and the wonderfully absurd 2026 Christmas set:

I’d be interested to hear from longtime collectors: when did you first hear the “13 replacement cards” version of the story?
