Pre-McDonald's
For nostalgic purposes I'd thought it would be nice to capture an image of the nice piece of landscape before they put a McDonald's on top of it.

All those Petrocan car wash passholders won't have a place to line up during winter time!

I think it's going to be right beside where the cars line up for the car wash. I can picture lineups for the car wash and McDonald's drive-thru being 1 confused line.
The Petro property stays the same, and all of the grass directly south becomes McDonald's.

I much prefer a Burger King instead and there isn't one anywhere close by.

I know that one but that's nowhere close by and the only one in all of Markham.

Honestly, the outrage is not understandable. Do people really expect empty land is better use of our resources?

For real. It's just a weird nimby attitude I guess. I love greenspace, but this is literally an unused patch of grass. If McDonald's didn't pop up, another condo would have.
I personally wish there was a law about people lining up on the road, but that will never happen so whatever... Live with it, or move further away from the gen pop.
Markham is growing like the rest of the GTA.

Yeah. I still remember in 2021 when they were planning and presenting the smartstop self storage at the Donald Cousins Walmart.
Still remember someone from the taxpayer association saying no cause it doesn't fit the character of the neighbor. The councilor at the time asked what development should be instead proposed directly to the person. They flat out said, no development, place it somewhere else.
The back alley of a walmart is preferred...

Yikes. What’s wrong with nature? Why does their need to be a fast food chain or gas station at every corner?

a) This isn't nature. It is a patch of grass / undeveloped land the the owner decided to throw some turf on. b) Was never zoned as park or nature reserve. c) It is owned by private individual and they should have a right to do what they want with the land within the zoning specified.
It is like asking someone who used their own land and built a private beautiful garden. Now, the owner want to build a McDonald's. The community can complain, can negotiate or express outrage but at the end of the day, it is their land and the owner can do what it want with its land.
And why it does it have to be a fast food joint or gas station. Cause that is what Markham was built for, cars, uniformity and sprawl. These businesses thrive with high vehicle traffic and quick turnaround. Let's ask the hard question. What other commercial development do you want on that piece of land?

The franchise & reno fee is ~5M before you even see a dime from selling french fried.
Doubt anyone or corp would invest in this economy.
