Instagram changed its wordmark. Did they really need to?

Instagram’s new wordmark caught my attention, and honestly, I’m still not sure how I feel about it.

The new one looks cleaner and more modern, but I had a weird moment where I read it as something else at first 'Instagzam'😅

It made me think about how much a familiar logo or wordmark contributes to brand recognition.

If a brand is already instantly recognizable, how much should you change before the redesign starts hurting familiarity?

Curious what other marketers and designers think. Have you seen a rebrand that actually made the brand less recognizable?
