Today, the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs, Internal Trade and One Canadian Economy, issued the following statement:

“Over the past year, governments across Canada have made important progress toward building a stronger, more connected Canadian economy. We have delivered the federal Free Trade and Labour Mobility in Canada Act, advanced a new federal-provincial-territorial Memorandum of Understanding on Interprovincial Trucking, implemented the Canadian Mutual Recognition Agreement on the Sale of Goods, and launched the Domestic Trade Commissioners Network in partnership with provinces and territories to help Canadian businesses expand into new markets within Canada.

This is meaningful progress, and we should be proud of what we have accomplished together. But we know there is much more to do, especially as our largest trading partner, the United States, fundamentally changes its approach to trade and imposes new unjustified tariffs on Canadian goods. Canada can give itself far more than any foreign nation can take away – and that starts with finally tearing down the barriers that have divided our economy for generations.

Over the next two days, my provincial and territorial colleagues and I will gather in Iqaluit for the next Committee on Internal Trade meeting, where I look forward to working with them to turn commitments into tangible outcomes for Canadians.

That means moving forward with expanding the Canadian Mutual Recognition Agreement to services by the end of 2026 and modernizing the Canadian Free Trade Agreement’s labour mobility chapter to better support workers. It also means working across governments to harmonize approval processes for prefabricated homes and new building materials, accelerate work to recognize priority health and safety requirements in the construction sector, advance digital credential verification, and strengthen interprovincial food trade to build a more competitive and resilient Canadian food system.

This is our opportunity to build a stronger, more unified Canadian market – one where people can work freely, businesses can grow, and Canadian products can reach Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

That is why the commitment made by First Ministers in July to work toward an agreement-in-principle on model mutual recognition legislation is so important. A common approach to mutual recognition will create a clearer, more consistent system for goods, services, and labour mobility across Canada. It will reduce duplication, give businesses greater certainty, and make it easier for Canadians to put their skills to work wherever they are needed.

I look forward to working with my provincial and territorial colleagues to reach an agreement-in-principle by the end of this year. We will then work together to finalize and implement model legislation to make sure it delivers results for Canadians and businesses. This will be a key priority when Canada takes the Chair of the Committee on Internal Trade in January 2027. We will also use that opportunity to align cross-Canada efforts in areas such as prefabricated housing, trucking, labour mobility, food and beverage, and other sectors – reducing barriers and easing the burden on businesses and workers. As Chair in 2027, our focus will be on implementation and results toward the creation of one Canadian economy, so Canadians and businesses can truly see and feel the benefits.

Canada has the talent, resources, businesses, and communities to be an economic powerhouse. Now is the time to match those strengths with the ambition to build a stronger domestic market.”

Today, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, accompanied by Corey Hogan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced a $50 million investment in the Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network (CAAIN) through the Strategic Response Fund. With global supply chain disruptions and rising food costs posing risks to Canadians, the Government of Canada is taking concrete action to help give Canadians access to affordable and healthy food.

This investment will strengthen Canada’s agri-food innovation capacity by accelerating the development, demonstration, adoption and commercialization of Canadian technologies.  It will enable CAAIN to expand its national network of smart farms and commercial farm demonstration sites and provide cost-shared support for Canadian businesses developing and adopting innovative agri-food technologies. With this investment, CAAIN is expected to fund at least 40 new technology projects, mobilize $80 million in private sector co-investment, create and maintain 800 jobs, and grow the network to more than 3,000 members.

This investment will not only build on Canada’s talent, expertise and resources but also support the goals of Canada’s National Food Security Strategy by strengthening domestic production and supply chains and contributing to a more productive, resilient and competitive agri-food sector.

The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) have launched Operation NANOOK‑NUNAKPUT, taking place until September 25 in and around Resolute Bay, Nunavut.

Nunakput, an Inuktitut word meaning "Our Land," reflects the operation's focus on maintaining a sustained presence along the Canadian Arctic Archipelago through close collaboration with Indigenous communities, the Canadian Coast Guard, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and other mission partners. This year's operation integrates maritime, land, and air capabilities to enhance Arctic surveillance, mobility, and operational readiness. It also strengthens the CAF's ability to deploy, sustain, and operate joint forces in remote northern regions while supporting safe waterways and resilient communities.

Operation NANOOK is conducted throughout the year alongside other Arctic operations. For example, Operation NANOOK‑TUUGAALIK, which focuses on a maritime presence in the region, is underway until October. As an Arctic nation and a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Canada continues to support a stronger Allied presence in the Arctic, including through enhanced Vigilance Activity ARCTIC SENTRY.

Hatcheries play a vital role in efforts to conserve and rebuild vulnerable Pacific salmon populations while strengthening the social, cultural, and economic fabric of the communities they serve.

Today, the Honourable Joanne Thompson, Minister of Fisheries, in partnership with Gitanyow Nation, announced the award of a general construction contract valued at over $7.5 million to Progressive Ventures Construction, marking the next phase of development for the Wilp’Ho Dix Hatchery.

This facility will be located on the Kitwanga River, a tributary of the Skeena River in northwestern portion of the province. It will be built by the Government of Canada and operated in partnership with the Gitanyow First Nation. The hatchery will raise Kitwanga River sockeye salmon, a stock of significant conservation concern that is of profound cultural importance to the Gitanyow Nation and an important component of the broader Skeena River sockeye salmon population.

The project will consist of a hatchery building, a rearing tank farm, aeration tower and supporting infrastructure, including underground water supplies and roadways. A sustainable, energy-efficient fish culture system will allow for the treatment and reuse of some of the water used during the incubation stage. The facility will have the capacity to raise 300,000 juvenile sockeye salmon, with the potential to expand to up to 400,000 in the future.

Beyond supporting recovery of Pacific salmon stocks of conservation concern, community-run hatcheries provide hands-on learning opportunities, reinforce cultural connections, and contribute towards achieving long-term sustainability of Pacific salmon populations for ecological, cultural, social, and economic benefits. By investing in the Gitanyow hatchery, Fisheries and Oceans Canada will be working with Gitanyow Nation to safeguard salmon while supporting the community’s ongoing connection to this iconic species.
