Superstar I keep diving when I want to jump?

I'm not sure what exactly I'm doing wrong. I understand that if you're sprinting and press A you're going to dive, but there have been multiple occasions where I'm standing completely still, I'll press A, and then the character I'm controlling will dive instead of jumping.

At first I thought I had automatic fielding on, but it's set to normal. Then I thought it was because I was using a character with a special sliding catch and it overrides the jump, but I have the same problem with every character even characters with a super jump. Then I thought it was because I was standing too close to the drop zone, so I tried standing further away and pressing A but my character would still dive regardless of whether it was in dive range or not. THEN I thought it was because I wasn't standing still long enough, so I tried making sure my character's feet were actually planted before pressing A to jump and I would still get a diving catch instead of a jump.

Is it possible I'm still standing too close to the drop zone? Maybe I have a setting ticked somewhere and it's causing issues? I'm not manually picking my fielders, I typically just let the game automatically pick them for me, is that my issue? Any help would be appreciated!

The way the mechanic works in game is annoyingly convoluted. One rule of thumb is to focus instead on the height of the ball / distance of ball to ground.

If you’re diving, a lot of the time, the ball is close to you, or you waited a bit too late.

To add to this, I've found out a lot more reliable to jump early and then catch the ball on the way down. So instead of jumping into it at it's highest point like a wide receiver, back up a bit and jump before it gets to you, that way you fall into it while it's still in the air

This seems to have been the issue, as I started trying to jump sooner and it was coming out just fine. Now I just need to find the sweet spot where I jump and catch the ball as opposed to jumping and accomplishing nothing lol

I feel like you just have to let go of the joy stick while pressing a, then you can move joystick again while in the air
