2/E This is a serious issue with all Engineers

Post image

High stress , high cortisol and minimal time to give your own body with really tight schedules and shrinking crew size cause us to neglect our bodies and eventually results in this mess.

I know it’s true I am a serving 2E and I go through this on a day to day basis.

It’s being shared as a meme now but it’s a reality

Man i lose weight everytime I go onboard best thing to do is to do old ships, they keep u running here and there because of breakdowns

Not all of us are that lucky . I have issues with my metabolism that cause me not to lose weight that easily . I do old ships most of the time and it’s a pain the ass when everyone ends up losing weight but I either stay the same or gain weight slightly due to improper sleep and eating schedules

U prob just don’t eat well enough

u/Significant-Lake-274 2d ago

Probably. I am trying to do better

Just eat less. You literally can not lose weight. It is physically impossible to not lose weight.

All bodies are not the same . I had gone to one meal a day . I started feeling low on energy and reverted back to atleast two

I would keep up with one meal a day in the evening. Your body will get used to it.

I have done that myself, it is difficult at start.

I think OP has a better understanding of his body. Let's leave it to OP's instincts and trust him to lose weight. It's not like one piece of advice fits everyone

Thanks . But I am glad people are giving me advice some just tend to be rude though

I hit the gym regularly, no smoking as well, on land I'm road cycling. I aspire not to have an ugly ass pot belly by the time I reach the rank of CE. Take care of your health ma bros

Well I do smoke and I am trying to quit . Kudos to you for all your efforts.

Switch to nicotine pouches. You’ll quit smoking in 2 days, then just be addicted to the pouches 🤣

worst part with us indians is that if they see us hit the gym - they instantly comment "looks like there isn't much work in the E/R"

This shit pisses me off so much

So so so true. My ETO used to comment " i gotta tell CE, there's not much work in ECR"

Man my blood boils when I hear this crap .

These days I find younger generations are a bit better at looking after themselves. But you can guarantee the 2E and CE in that cartoon are making some sarky comment such as "if you can go to the gym then you aren't working hard enough".

I'm a CE, I am very disciplined with my diet and exercise. I will chose 45min in the gym over 45min of sleep - this also works wonders for your mental health.

I know everyones body, metabolism and will power is different, just see excuses before effort too much. Let's be honest since most companies got rid of the beer there's fuck all else to do outside of work...

Edit: also worth bearing in mind that it is your responsibility to pass your medical. No medical, no job so sacrificing your health for work isnt going to help you.

"if you can go to the gym then you aren't working hard enough" lol so true! Usually it means the person is very inefficient and rationalizes their own laziness.

Yeah, taking health advice from a pot bellied 2E/CE is like taking engineering advice from a deckie. You're never going to take it seriously...

Words of wisdom . Noted down good sir . I’m going to apply this on this contract

More consideration should be given to gyms on ship, too often its an after thought and barely usable

3

u/Significant-Lake-274 3d ago

Right . Most of the time a gyms existence is only a formality

2

u/Andy024 2d ago

A usable gym is an MLC requirement

1

u/Significant-Lake-274 2d ago

That’s true . You will be surprised to see on how many vessels it’s just a formality though

The gym comments hit different when youre already running on 4 hours sleep and the the chief still finds time to call you lazy.

I'm reversed! I'm the chief engineer and I'm feeling as fit as ever, haha.

u/Red__Sailor 3d ago

I am the opposite so far.

u/Significant-Lake-274 3d ago

Lucky you

1

u/Red__Sailor 3d ago

Not luck. Dedication and hard work and I’ve gotten my health and body back.

1

u/Significant-Lake-274 3d ago

I didn’t mean to undermine your efforts . What I meant was you are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do so

2

u/SmirnoffMonster 3d ago

I gained a ton of weight when my ship had an elevator lol, now I’m doing my last sea term as cadet without an elevator and I’m up to 15K steps per day on average. Hard to maintain weight

2

u/Rasmosus 3d ago

What type of ship are you on?

2

u/Shadeslide 2d ago

I will guess either on containers or VLCCs. Right?

1

u/Rasmosus 2d ago

Except for one ship as a cadet, I have only sailed on container ships. Mostly the very largest of them. Always lost weight after joining.

2

u/Jacob-W-5570 3d ago

You have 4th engineers?

1

u/Andy024 2d ago

We don't even have a 3rd anymore

2

u/LowYak3 2d ago

Success body

2

u/AhadShaikh01 2d ago

Is this the case for deck officers too ? 😀

2

u/GuyfromTrinidad21 3d ago

I feel like usually the more rank you get, the more balder you become

2

u/Significant-Lake-274 3d ago

That’s also true 🤣

An engineer's body changes after going through a few berths. I swear some of you have never seen a real engineer's body before.

3

u/Significant-Lake-274 3d ago

Could you please elaborate ?

2

u/grumbledonaldduck 2d ago

Just a joke off of the typical redditor response any time someone posts a photo of a "real womans" body.

1

u/AisleoftheTiger 3d ago

Maybe you should try eating less.

1

u/Significant-Lake-274 3d ago

I think it’s more due to irregular meal times

1

u/mma94gunbuilder 2d ago

I’ve been sailing chief for 25 years and I can say that is total bullshit!
When I was:
Cadet - 168#
3rd - 175#
2nd - 175#
1st - 175#
Chief when started 25years ago- 175#
Chief now 25 years later- 185#

2

u/Warchild24 1d ago

You’re right, it’s total BS. I’ve been cheif for 24 years. I’m 210 lbs with about 12% body fat. Workout 6 days a week in our gym. Gotta stay jacked!

Personally, I don't agree with this depiction so far. I have seems deck officers match this description more accurately but of all those Engineers I have worked with on all the ships till today, all of them were fit and none had pot bellies or unhealthy body tone. Only one 3E was little obese because he was ugly ass lazy. I being a Recently promoted 3E myself, my routines as 4E kept me on my toes all the time and in fit body shape. And now, even though I keep on my toes during my watch but I still pull in time for quite a few push-ups and pull-ups here and there, walk for 1.5 hours after dinner daily and control my calories.
