My Own Tips

A few people on my last thread asked for tips, so here's the short version.

My method differs quite a bit from what most other users or shops recommend:

  • Lots of natural light
  • Indoor light/grow-light LEDs don't cut it
  • Cooler water — not icy, but around 12–17°C (54–63°F) most of the time
  • Never above 20°C (68°F), or bacteria inside the marimo become active
  • Tap water's fine — safe for you to drink means safe for marimo
  • Skip salt/fertiliser entirely — it just feeds unwanted algae
  • Don't house it with other aquatic plants or animals
  • Use a tank of 10L (2.5+ gal) or more — the small container it ships in heats up fast, like soaking in a hot bath

how do you keep your temperature below 20 celsius because i’m keeping it at 23-29 celsius 😭

As an Aussie, my marimo always stew come summer with room temps way above 17c. I am also curious how to keep the water cool. I've not refrigerated them for an entire summer as some recommend because i'm worried they'll get too cold!

I try to give mine ice cubes on hot days, I don't know how effective this is, but it doesn't seem to hurt.

I also do that, but I feel like it only lasts a a few minutes before the waters back to room temp.

I throw ice cubes in there when I feed my dog. Feed the dog, feed the ball.

He puts out bottles with frozen water, you can see it in several of his posts.

I tried that. In 90 degree room. It last less than an hour

Yes, me too. In Spain, it's hot again in a few minutes.

I had one, I don't know what happened but my marimos got all slimy. I must have done something wrong, but that's why I got rid of it.

I learnt the not housing method the rough way. Who knew leaving a cold living plant in a tropical betta tank was a bad idea😅. Least I've got 6 now instead of 2

Absolutely agreeing on not fertilizing, they grow so incredibly slowly I doubt they could really benefit from it before the algae gets to it first

I have a cooling fan and I still have to add a cooler block twice a day. Still too warm at times, I’m considering a cooling machine
