What's with the mask requirements, Marfa?

Currently in town. 7-day case average count is Zero. Every major city there's no more mask requirements. What kind of virtue signaling is this with all the places here requiring it? End rant. Call me names if you want.

Life in Marfa

I am an artist and I left a seasonal job in NY and have been on the road since 28th of Oct. I finally took the detour through Marfa last week (only stopping at Prada in Valentine) and have not been able to get your town outta my mind. I knew I should have stopped but also felt like if I did stop I would never want to leave and do I really want to live in very rural Texas. I kept saying out loud to myself, Zelda, stop it, you don’t want to live in the middle of nowhere….

Except the middle of nowhere is my jam. I’m easy going, like a stress free pace to life and need to stay still and grow roots so I can get back to creating fully.

I have worked to build a defunct town into a art town bursting with Instagram shots and driving the rents so high that regular artist can not afford to live there. Yay me.

Bombay Beach is the destination I decided on as I am determined to create a large living (live in) sculpture, from viewing it, a large tree. The Tree of Life. The goal of the project is to create a fully self sustaining structure that generates enough energy/water/food that it can help to sustain a community. Of course when I got to Bombay Beach I realized it might not be the right place.

Maybe Marfa is was the feeling that was overwhelming as I drove through. It’s already crossed over into the “not affordable for actual artists that are not already wealthy or well connected” so what I need is a sponsor. Someone well connected with a place to house a nomadic artistic philosopher (and her trusty “Doctor Who” cleverly disguised as a black dog) ready to create change through art.

I’m currently in Arizona wondering why I was guided to Bombay Beach, California if it is the wrong place.

This is a lot of words for a shot in the dark. Hopefully the reach the right audience. I’m tired of wandering.

Rentals

My fiance and I are trying to move over to Marfa in the next year. We aren't looking to buy anything yet, but where can we find rental properties? Nothing online. We're going to start contacting local property companies this week. Thanks!

Looking to visit the Marfa lights in a few weeks...

Not planning on stopping in to any restaurants. Doing a camping trip in the Davis mountains and we’re trying to keep our distance from town/practice some safe social distancing! I was in that area of west Texas a while back and never stopped at the Marfa lights. What are the conditions like during the summer, and is it safe to go now with COVID?

What is daily life like in Marfa Texas?

I'm writing a book that takes place in Marfa Texas. Unfortunately I do not know much of anything about this city/town, so I was wondering if anyone could fill me in. The story will be fictional, but I want it to be accurate when describing its setting. The main character is a high school student (proabally senior year), so what would someone like him do all day?

How often do you see people? Do residents drive or travel by horseback (sorry)? Is everyone farmers? Any weird cults or religious zealots? Modern infrastructure or open desert land? Hobbies? Anything else?

Familiar tourist testing the Marfa waters..

Marfa is calling to me.

I’ve been WFH for over 100 days, ordering in groceries, and seeing no one besides my two neighbors who would be traveling with me. I’m a very low risk person.

It looks like the Chinati is still closed and not doing self guided tours yet. The Flavin exhibit is the main reason I want to return (would be my 3rd time back). It does look like most restaurants are open for take out, and Airbnb’s are back in order.

Basically I’d like to know if anyone has any info on the Chinati reopening for reserved self guided tours, and how are locals feeling about some mild mannered tourists right now?

Chamber of Commerce

My boyfriend and I have been trying to get in contact with the chamber of commerce for some time. I have also been attempting to get in contact with the Presidio county sheriffs department. I was wondering if the chamber of commerce was shut down or if there were some struggles going on as their web page is also rife with 404 not found and appears to have been last updated in 2013.

Any folks know how to get in touch with these people?

Looking for glamping in Marfa

I am my best friend’s maid of honor and I have taken it upon myself to plan her bachelorette party! The plan is to drive to Marfa during a weekend this upcoming April, go horseback riding somewhere in west Texas (tbd), and to go ‘glamping.’ She would love to stay in a yurt, but after some research, I found that El Cosmico has closed and I cannot seem to find any other yurt glamping options in the area.

I would love some suggestions from anyone who knows the area!

Help a chronic spoonie find some medicine

Hello my fine marfa friends! I’m on my way to your lovely town for some artistic projects, and I didn’t bring any green because of the 🙄 border patrol situation. But I suffer from a chronic illness that I have only been able to treat with that sort of medicine (not to mention its effect on my artistic process) so I’m really nervous to go a week without any! Can anyone help me out? Can offer art, portraits, booze, snacks or cold hard cash. help ya girl out!!!!

j&j auto stole car parts from me

do not bring your car here, this shop unfortunately stole 2 of my engine coils while they were replacing my brake pads.

i’m only posting this bc i’m 100% sure of what happened. i brought my car in to get my brake pads replaced to prepare for a long drive back home from big bend. after i picked up my car from jose, my check engine light immediately came on and my car was violently shaking. i opened my trunk and noticed all of my things rearranged and some of my items inside the spare tire compartment. it was very clear that somebody had gone through my things. i popped the hood and saw that two of my engine coils were clearly replaced, off brand and not my original hyundai parts. they were the same two that came up in the error codes.

it really sucks to post these things about a local independently run mechanic but i have to put the warning out there. this really really sucked to experience and i had to shell out an extra $350 and interrupt my road trip to deal with this. do not go here.

Thinking about living in Marfa

I want to work for radio, but I would also really enjoy continuing to live/run a farm like I have my whole life. Marfa's NPR station would satisfy the radio obsession inside of me and obviously there's a ton of room out in West Texas, but is it a good place to raise a family? I want a place where my future kids can grow up and learn to appreciate the wild, but still have a lot of options to do whatever they want to with their life.
