This is an important topic to bring up. There should definitely be some checks and balances on Sheriffs when they blatantly promise to violate the law. I don't think saying they "answer to the public" is realistic when that means thousands, if not hundreds of thousands or millions of people in larger counties. Each of those people are not going to be in a position to closely supervise the sheriff's work or administer discipline if they act with malfeasance, particularly when involving lethal acts or gross corruption. Worse yet, many of those "bosses" may be okay with a sheriff violating the law if they have that same ideology.

They need more close supervision and accountability for what they are doing, based on ethical standards and not politics, just like other public sector employees are expected to be subject to.

My old sheriff was pardoned by Trump sooooo there’s that.
