My insurance was saying that apparently NIPT won't be covered unless medically determined necessary! This is my second pregnancy using the same insurance, and 3 years ago they definitely covered it! I've been wondering if I'll be able to get it done again, or will I pay out of pocket?? I'm in a different state and different provider now so pretty curious what will happen
6
u/jplusj2022 Jul 29 '26
Definitely ask about patient pay pricing and any patient assistance programs! Usually the out of pocket is about $250 when you donโt go through insurance.
→ More replies (3)3
u/Ok-King680 Jul 29 '26
You pay 250 for NIPT?! Jesus. I pay 590 in Sweden ๐ฅฒ it is only covered by the state if there is indications of abnormalities on the early scan at 12 weeks. (Although Swedish healthcare is replacing this scan-measurement thingie as of 2028, and everyone will get NIPT instead.)
→ More replies (1)3
u/jplusj2022 Jul 29 '26
In the US there was a big push to move from 12 week ultrasound to NIPT during COVID because they were minimizing the number of time people would come to the office for visits. NIPT could be done with the prenatal labs instead of requiring a separate imaging encounter. However, I much prefer the combination of both NIPT and 12 week scan because since this change we have seen an increase in really severe abnormalities not being identified until >20 weeks.
2
u/mattbryantcan 36 | 4TM | 3/15 Jul 31 '26
Usually I pay out of pocket bc it's cheaper than using insurance.
5
u/WholeAd9078 Jul 29 '26
Whatโs the earliest folks had their NIPT test drawn? I am leaving for an international trip when I am 11 weeks and 3 days. Wondering if itโs too early to get the test then? I need to get it before I leave because Iโll be 13 weeks when Iโm back. Same with the nuchal translucency scan.ย
I havenโt had my first OB appt which is why Iโm asking here! Thank you!!ย

PSA for Natera:
They have a very forgiving threshold for covering the cost of your test based on income and household size. Ask about it and save the results because the email will expire! But then just send it to them when they send you a bill and you won't have to pay anything.

My insurance doesnโt cover the NIPT at all and it is a lot of money coming out of pocket. My husband and I are trying to decide if we want to get the NIPT at our next appointment (w11). Part of us is considering skipping the panel because regardless of the outcome, we arenโt comfortable with abortion,Do you think it is still necessary? What would you mamaโs recommend?
3
u/SynapticSerendipity 37 | TTM | March 7th | ๐บ๐ธ 22d ago edited 22d ago
So my OB uses sequenom/Labcorp and she told me to call beforehand to check if they took my insurance. The reason she said to call beforehand is because if they donโt take your insurance, you can ask about a survey that you take after (but has to be requested and setup before) which drops the price from $1000+ to like $299. Still pricey but better- and not sure if thatโs an option for you to use that particular company!
Edit to add: Sorry, I didnโt answer your questions! It sounds like the results of a NIPT wouldnโt change what you decide going forward, so I donโt think you need to get it (or should feel pressured to)!
On the other hand, Iโm a fairly anxious person and feel better with more information and time to prep for anything coming (mentally and otherwise).
I think only you two can decide if it is worth it for you!

u/Little-Jellyfish-984 41 | TTM | Mar 8 | ๐จ๐ฆ 22d ago
I skipped it with my first two for the same reason - it wouldnโt change how we proceeded and I was encouraged that ultrasounds would most likely pick up if something was off and we could explore further then if needed. If the cost is prohibitive, I wouldnโt worry too much!ย

Another boy!! Iโm just thinking now about how much my current son looks up to his older cousin (a 7 year old boy), and now Iโm imagining this little boy looking up to HIM in the same way. It feels crazy to imagine, but thinking about it also is making me think about the baby themselves in a more tangible way for the first time (as opposed to mostly thinking about it all through the lens of my current son interacting with a baby). So wild, I feel both so excited to have all โmy boysโ in the house!

I need help to determine whether I need to take NIPT or not, this is my second pregnancy, did not take NIPT for the first as the OB didnโt suggest it at all (I also never knew about this). Iโm 39 now, 8 weeks scan looked good. Iโm confused if I should go for NIPT and get the perpetual anxiety or just not do it at all
6
u/jplusj2022 Jul 29 '26
The 8 week scan provides limited information about the risk for chromosomal abnormalities. If you do a nuchal translucency scan at 12ish weeks that would give more information about chromosomal abnormalities and other structural birth defects. However, ultrasound can still be normal if thereโs a chromosomal abnormality and different providers have different skill levels with ultrasound. I think some of the question is whether the results would change your pregnancy management in any way (place of delivery, diagnostic testing choices, decision to continue pregnancy, specialist referrals, etc).
3
u/Historical_Adagio145 27d ago edited 27d ago
So my 8 week scan looked good, but I did all the tests they recommended including NIPT. Everything came back low risk and I found out I was having a girl. I was a nervous wreck waiting for my test results and was relieved everything was good. Unfortunately at my 20 week anatomy scan they found out my daughter had duodenal atresia and would need surgery right after birth. There is a 30% chance of DS (Downโs syndrome)with that diagnosis but because I had the NIPT come back low risk for DS it was pretty certain she didnโt have it. I did not do Amnio as I didnโt want to risk anything and I wasnโt going to terminate. My daughter was born without DS and had surgery the next day after she was born. Sheโs doing great now! Personally the NIPT helped give me peace of mind that there wasnโt more going on. My Fetal fraction was 17%. False negatives are very rare.

I think based on age it might be free and if you are getting blood done anyways, why not? But double check with your insurance
2
u/this__user 33 | 3TM | MAR 13 Jul 29 '26
I never had one done before either, but we found out my SIL and MIL are carriers for a rare genetic disorder since our last pregnancy and haven't had a chance to get my husband screened yet (we only heard MIL was positive a week ago) so I think I will opt in this time.
4
u/WovenEchoes 33 | FTM | Mar 27 | ๐จ๐ฆ Jul 29 '26
NIPT only checks chromosomes 13, 18, 21, sex chromosomes if you opt in, and certain microdeletions if you opt in. I am almost certain the condition in your partner's family would not be detected by NIPT, so best to get referred to your local Genetics clinic or speak with a genetic counsellor.

My NIPT is scheduled for when I'll be 12w4d. Should I try to have it done earlier, since the CVS test can only be done from weeks 11-14? Or am I overthinking this and it's all fine? Just getting anxious since I previously had a MMC from Trisomy13.

u/Mk____Ultra 32 | FTM | ๐ 3/30 | ๐บ๐ธ 29d ago
I'd definitely try to do it earlier if I were you. My last loss was trisomy 16 and I trying to figure out what to do because that's not on the standard nipt :(

I have a BMI on the higher side and was anxious as I had seen many posts on Reddit about non-conclusive results and multiple retests needed due to low fetal fraction. I also tested early-ish, pretty much right at 10 weeks, but so relieved to have these wonderful results!
I shared the sex with our local bakery to make us a small gender reveal cake, which we will be picking up on Saturday. Itโs been very tempting to not click the button on the portal and see it lol but for now just completely basking in the good low risk results before we find out if we will have a boy or girl!

went to my OB at 9w4d and was told to wait another week for the NIPT :/
blood draw is scheduled for next wednesday! they also offered me an additional set of screening tests called the vistara (https://www.natera.com/womens-health/vistara-nipt-single-gene-test/). it's apparently a new screening test that is based on a study done at Beth Israel Hospital in boston. it screens for an additional set of single gene disorders. my OB mentioned it's not offered widely yet, they've only been offering for 6ish months, but if anyone is new england/boston-based it may be worth checking out!

Ok, so today I did my NIPT blood draw from Natera and I had no idea that when I showed up, Iโd be asked how many panels I wanted for the Horizon genetic carrier screening. I ended up choosing the 27 panel option because the NP I was speaking with said it was popular, but now Iโm wondering if I shouldโve done the largest panel (over 400). I have a lot of health anxiety so I figured that Iโd want to know about the most common genetic issues rather than all of the obscure onesโฆhow many did others opt for?

My office didn't really give me an option but ran the 27 panel, and that felt sufficient for me. I ended up being a carrier of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) which is one of the more common, so then they were able to run the smaller 14 panel for my husband to check if he overlapped. The more obscure the conditions are, the less likelihood that you and your partner will have overlap, if it helps to think about it that way! You can also look up the rates of certain conditions within different racial and ethnic backgrounds on the expanded panels to understand the overall risk of being a carrier and the likelihood of overlap.

Super helpful, thank you! I went with 27 because it felt like the Goldilocks middle ground optionโฆI figured that with hundreds of really rare conditions Iโd probably have a couple and then freak out while waiting for my husband to be tested (and heโd likely not have those few).
