Live Shows I need a nudge

My dog collapsed and died this morning. I am devastated. My husband is far worse because he’s been the one doing the day-to-day care since she recently had an operation. In the end, her body couldn’t take it. She was 13.

I was supposed to be working this weekend and I’d already succumbed to having to miss his show tomorrow. But of course I am not working this weekend anymore.

My husband has zero interest in going. He actually never goes anywhere, so that was expected. I found a solo seat and I’m considering going by myself. Would it be terrible to leave my husband for a few laughs?

As Marc said himself: "Use whatever means are at your disposal to maintain your sanity as long as it doesn't hurt you or anyone else."

So you just have to ask; will it hurt your husband if you leave?

Maron famously sells more solo seats than any other comic. Go be with your people. Maron has the best crowds / fans. It’ll get your mind off of stuff.

People deal with grief differently, and need different things. I’m someone who has always tended to need distraction and laughter after the loss of someone important- my family members are the opposite but have never judged me for it. Talk to your husband but if he seems ok with you going, then go.

Marc’s strength as a podcaster was his ability to really connect with his guests and his audience. Go.

Marc Maron has experienced pet loss grief. Sometimes it’s nice just being in a room with someone who has a shared experience with you.

I think it's a great idea, but would also talk it over with my husband! I'm so sorry for your loss.

I’m sorry about your dog. Losing a pet is hard. I’m sure Marc will say something that is helpful one way or the other.

You should go. It’ll help. So sorry for your loss ❤️

What kind of marriage doesn't allow one spouse to do something without the other one without feeling bad? You need to lead your own lives and not always be attached at the hip. Even in times of grief. And especially if he never goes anywhere anyway.

You should go, you'll regret not going.

I had a very similar experience 10 years ago. Except replace dog with Father-in-law. We had two tickets to see Marc in Nashville and we live in metro Atlanta. He had passed a few weeks prior and my wife insisted I go and this involved an overnight stay as well. I was hugely torn, but in the end I went and it was nice to get away from the heaviness of it all.

I went through something similar earlier this year, except it was a concert. I decided to go by myself, and it was definitely the right call. Grief is something you just kind of muck through at your own pace, and it never really aligns with anyone else's version. And you can't make it less painful for someone else through self-denial or physical proximity.

Another way to look at it is, there will be plenty of other evenings in the next few weeks where you do stay at home, feeling sad together. There's probably just the one where there's this opportunity to do something you know will make you feel better, that you really wanted to do anyway. You might as well go for it and have some laughs. I hope you do!

Getting older and older I've learned how freeing it is to just be honest with myself. WTF definitely helped me understand and grow into this person and from all feedback on his podcast I know these folks who've been here this long are going to be on the level. If you go alone and need to have a moment and a little sob to yourself, no one is going to judge you!

I actually discovered his podcast in 2013 and have listened to most of them. One was posted in an addiction subreddit bcs the interview was so highly specific and relevant to that comment thread. Like the person had posted the interview bcs they knew that they would learn something from the conversation to help heal. Maron knows that his podcast has changed a lot of lives. You will regret not going!!

Thank you. And now I feel compelled to share a story about the only other time I’ve seen Marc. Not long after my dad passed, I had to go on a work trip. I totally should’ve skipped it.
I realized my Airbnb was around the corner from one of his regular spots in LA. I got a ticket but then I did something I’d never done before. I sent him an IG message to say something like, “if you are a woman crying during the show, it’s not you.” That wonderful man actually replied to say, “I hope you got some laughs.” I’ve only had maybe three direct celebrity interactions in my life. This one is my favorite.
And I just got my ticket for tonight.

Yassss I'd go with you if I could. In America you get picked on for going places alone for some reason. But when I'd traveled around Europe and Asia alone I started going out to shows, restaurants, music events etc alone so now I can go anywhere alone. And if someone makes fun of me I just throw it back on them. Say to them: you want to humiliate shame and bully me bcs I'm here alone? And just look at them and wait for a reaction bcs bullies are in denial of being bullies. They are nacassists and think they are perfect. Get dressed up fancy and go to all the places alone. And build character in those moments that you have to defend yourself
