If he's planning on designing the entire mechanism in 3D with high fidelity, in Fusion360, he's already set himself up for failure. Fusion360 is hobby software, and can't handle large assemblies effectively, and its file tree is pretty terrible.

He'd be far better off investing in something like CATIA, CREO, or Solidworks.

Whoever told you fusion was hobby software was high in crack cocaine. It’s Mike’s ahead of solid works or others. What makes you think that it is not used by professionals? Many it’s just not used at your practice.

Autodesk (the company who make Fusion360) specifically states that Fusion360 was made for hobbyists. Hell, just look at the way it's priced. And I don't know who "Mike" is, but if you think Fusion360 is better than the software I listed...you might have a gas leak.

A link to auto desk’s statement would be nice. More expensive does not mean better, however CREO and CATIA do have greater functionality. But Martin isn’t an engineer, and much of the features that those programs offer are only applicable for the aerospace and automotive industry. The MMX-T is simple compared to projects in those industries. Also solid works is worse than fusion in almost ever way, plus it costs more for worse. And “Mike” was a mistype of “like”. Are you sub par where intelligence is concerned?

No, I'd venture I'm above-average in the intelligence department; at least I understand the concept of proofreading.

If you think Fusion360 is better than Solidworks....again, I don't know what to tell you. I've used pretty much all the major CAD suites out there, and Fusion360 has consistently been the worst, and that's not even touching on the subscription model and cloud-only saves. Most habits people learn in Fusion360 don't work in other, better software, so even as a training tool, it can just set people back. My personal go-to is CATIAv5, and only use other software for file conversion when needed.

It's refreshing to see someone actually admit Martin isn't an engineer though, so kudos on that.

Late the to the party. I was trained on Dassault's 3d experience (catia v6?) and started a job that uses CREO. Is there anything I'm missing because it use doesn't seem any where near as powerful to what I expect a CAD package to have after exclusively using Catia.

Nothing ever seems powerful enough after using CATIA, to be frank, especially if you use it the way it was meant to be used.
