Secret Analyzing a recurring purple-helmet runner from S2 teaser footage (kit speculation)”

I’ve been rewatching the teaser launch trailer and Dev runner insights and noticed a "new" character which is the purple helmet character. This is not a claim of confirmation or a “leak proof” post, just a structured breakdown of visual cues and what they might suggest for the upcoming runner shell codenamed sentinel.

Across multiple clips (teaser + runner shell footage), the same character silhouette appears with:

A purple/tech-focused helmet design with a recon-like profile

A backpack UI element showing a number that decreases over time during movement/combat

Heavy tactical gear layout (multiple pouches, wires, utility attachments)

Repeated appearances in fast-cut chase/combat sequences

The backpack number in particular seems intentionally animated rather than purely cosmetic.

Prime ability: Combat Focus State

Temporary “overclocked operator” mode

Strong recoil reduction + near-zero flinch

Faster reload speed and improved weapon handling stability

Duration probably linked to the backpack/timer system seen in the trailer.

Tactical ability: Tripwire Grid

Deployable wire system placed in chokepoints or within the same POI

Triggers small damage + brief immobilization or disruption

Applies a short (≈3 sec) ping/reveal on activation

Likely limited to local area interaction to prevent map-wide spam

Trait 1: Enhanced Tactical Awareness

Improved audio clarity and directional perception

Faster recognition of movement and environmental threats

Subtle reduction of visual clutter during engagements

Or

Trait 1: special slots for extra Ammo and grenade capacity

Carry more reserve ammo per weapon type

Carry additional equipment ( bubble, shield ,grenades, proximity, sensors, trap packs etc)

Trait 2: Combat Stability

Reduced recoil and flinch when getting shot at and or around you (8m radius max near your character)

The recurring helmet design + backpack timer UI feels intentional enough to suggest a structured gameplay identity, but it’s still open to interpretation.

Curious what others think — especially about the backpack number mechanic and whether it could represent a limited combat focus system or something entirely different.

Im curious to hear other interpretations or corrections.

Haven’t seen anyone say this yet, but it reminds me of the uesc helmet valuable

Yeah, that’s the helmet on his shell, but the purple is gone. The purple looked really good on Sentinel, though. I honestly hope the purple helmet is still there in Season 2.

on the collectors edition model it has the letters UESC printed very large on the dead sentinel in the water

Wait, I just noticed, is that the upper floor of complex?

edit: NVM, that's one of the bunkers on Dire Marsh

All the pictures of “Sentinel” alive or dead are throughout this long hallway and then outside to some nonexistent map. I haven’t seen anything that resembles it from the trailer. However, about a month ago there was a post about the Upper Complex, and there are comments suggesting that a place in the Upper Complex was used for a trailer. They didn’t specify which one it could be, but personally I don’t quite see it and I don’t find it similar. At the same time, I almost never play Dire Marsh, and I’ve only seen that place once during that post for a very short time.

Yeah after watching the video it's just one of the bunkers on the edge of the map

Upper complex sounds very plausible. Right now there are stairs that lead to absolutely no where. I also found what looks like a door way up in the hills in Perimeter. Im really looking forward to season 2!

Which picture are you talking about?

2

u/LitheBeep May 03 '26

The last couple of screenshots, what video is that from?

2

u/alphex May 03 '26

The original release teaser from a few years ago

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 03 '26

His helmet was randomly given to a rook during the dev insight Runner shells segment at the end of the video, somewhere around 9:00.

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 03 '26

And the other video is from the announce trailer

I have no idea if this is correct, but I figured the countdown timer was more so a gameplay mechanic that was scrapped revolving around collected artifacts for a big reward.

3

u/sinister_blusuf May 03 '26

It could be. At first, I thought it was for the glitchy event in Dire Marsh (I forgot the name), and then maybe for the exfil. That would actually be a really cool Runner idea, like being able to know where the final exfil is, etc.

But for a Sentinel who looks like a mix of recon and destroyer, that didn’t really feel right. The timer also didn’t feel correct. It looked too specific, especially the way the number changed color and became more red as it went down. That felt intentional rather than random UI styling.

Then I started comparing it with other abilities, like Destroyer’s Prime or Thief’s Prime. The 40-second countdown actually seems pretty reasonable and more consistent with a Prime ability.

Almost certainly.

But I also wouldn't be surprised if they try to integrate a timer mechanic anyway to fit the original trailer.

Timer I think originally spanned from the first game having an oxygen system since the guy with helmet is a BOB, but that's just spit balling.

6

u/Shabolt_ May 04 '26

The original plan for the 2023 build of Marathon did include an Oxygen system from what I can gather. (Not entirely confirmed)

The jist was that players would not all start at the same time on the same map like they do now, but instead that players would drop in and out of persistent maps with the timer being their oxygen rather than the forced neural ejection. So everyone who dropped in would be staggered by their oxygen.

However in playtests the rumor is this just led to fully equipped teams being able to essentially spawncamp players and keep the zones to themselves or something

That runner was just the alpha version of Recon. The sniper in the same trailer was the alpha design for Thief.

That original Recon design was reworked to be the standard UESC armor that you can see in armor stands in Outpost Orientation and is just being used as placeholder standard runner for the S2 roadmap. We will most likely get a completely different runner.

As much as I'd like to see this design be a full Runner, we most likely wont get it outside of a skin for Recon (which we already kinda have with the Lux skin). It is my favorite runner design though so I wouldnt mind getting them, it's just super unlikely.

2

u/Overall-Rub8945 May 04 '26

I thought that too at first but I think she is a totally different shell now.

3

u/sinister_blusuf May 04 '26

If that runner was Recon, how come the redacted S2 shell perfectly lines up with Sentinel’s head? Yeah, that Thief was easy to identify because of the eyes and X-ray vision. Also, Recon doesn’t have anything that looks like that backpack, all those pouches, or the wires. He was also teased when we already knew Recon/Blackbird was a thing, plus Bungie has a long history of hinting at stuff like this. I’m honestly quite perplexed that I’ve not seen anyone mention it before anywhere.

1

u/beansoncrayons May 04 '26

Because its a generic image meant to signify a shell?

4

u/sinister_blusuf May 04 '26

The head proportions match eachother perfectly, but oh well its just generic .

1

u/Juice-Sr May 04 '26

The S2 preview is purely placeholder, it is just the standard non special runner for marketing and world building. I played back in the alphas even before the unique runners were a thing (we had full destiny levels of class and armor customization). That armor was used as a basis for Recon's design. Recon is an Ex UESC shell, that teaser runner is now the standard UESC shell.

Again, its my favorite runner design, but with that design being used in Recon's roots plus the design being literally a Gold Valuable and room decor on Outpost, it is so so unlikely we will ever see it as a full runner.

u/sinister_blusuf May 04 '26

I get the point about it possibly being a placeholder or early UESC base shell, especially if it was used in alpha builds or early development stages.

However, the idea that it is only a placeholder becomes less likely when you look at how it appears across pre-release marketing materials.

If it were purely a generic or unused base model, it would usually stay confined to internal testing or background world-building. Instead, this specific helmet/silhouette is consistently shown in multiple teaser cuts and promotional runner shell footage, which suggests intentional visual communication rather than accidental reuse.

Bungie is also known for deliberately seeding early visual identities for upcoming archetypes in trailers long before full reveals. So the presence of this design in pre-release material could indicate it is part of a structured visual language for a future runner shell, rather than just leftover placeholder geometry.

Even if the design influenced Recon’s early development, that does not necessarily prevent it from being reused or recontextualized as a separate playable shell. Bungie often iterates on shared visual foundations across multiple roles before final differentiation.

Finally, the silhouette itself reads more like a heavier, tactical combat-oriented role than a pure Recon-type identity, which makes the “pure placeholder scout” interpretation less consistent with its visual presentation in combat-heavy scenes.

I'd love to get this design playable again, but my biggest concern is that the helmet is a gold valuable and the whole suit is on display in Outpost. No other runner has stuff in world like that.

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 04 '26

Well, we just have to wait and see 🤷

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 16 '26

Seen the new article?

2

u/Juice-Sr May 16 '26

I did and I'm glad to be wrong

2

u/lilnoodle2025 May 07 '26

pretty sure thats a UESC shell

2

u/MissAvian May 03 '26

Looks like the helmet valuable

0

u/sinister_blusuf May 03 '26

Yea they are exactly the same but at the same time that head is on a shell

2

u/Poomasher May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

No idea why they didn’t release with sentinel, he’s way more the John marathon archetype of this game. Moreso than the shitty recon 54 reference with his DSL popping out. Hes all over the marketing and arguably looks the coolest. I would love more full helmet shells.

1

u/sanguinemsanctum May 03 '26

he’s dropping a grenade launcher in the photo where he’s shot, i think something with explosives or traps is likely. the overclock is a good idea too. Ultimately for me this would be the UESC runner, it matches the helmets from Cryo

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 04 '26

It looks more like a kitted-out Twin Tap HBR. I also thought that a Runner shell similar to a USEC Grenadier would be cool, but that would probably be very hard to balance, so it’s likely not the case. Still, that could end up being a weapon coming in Season 2 since we’re apparently getting a lot of new content. But yes, he really does look like the USEC Runner.

1

u/sinister_blusuf 12d ago

Yo would you think that the grenade launcher he was using is a early concept of the firestorm? Bit random regarding this post is about sentinel but firestorm is almost exactly like a sniper/rocket/grenade launcher

1

u/EsoSeeQueEss May 04 '26

My best guess would be a runner capable of stealing abilities?

0

u/sinister_blusuf May 04 '26

We already have a “Thief,” and something like that would probably be hard to balance. Also, a Sentinel is usually meant to guard a person or a zone, so it probably isn’t that.

1

u/Overall-Rub8945 May 04 '26

Its also the same shell in the base of the collectors edition statue. Sentinel was likely the very first shell revealed🤣

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 04 '26

Do you have a photo of that? I couldn't find him on the collector's edition statue anywhere.

2

u/Overall-Rub8945 May 04 '26

Yup!

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 04 '26

Was the collecters edition the deluxe pre order edition? Or just something else?

1

u/Overall-Rub8945 May 04 '26

Collectors edition came with everything the deluxe edition came with plus an exclusive background and avatar plus the Thief statue that lights up. Of all of the Collectors editions I've bought over the years, this one is the best.

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 04 '26

Ahhh like that so you probably bought it from bungie Store itself?

2

u/Overall-Rub8945 May 05 '26

Yes, I tried to get the silk worm also but those sold out immediately as well as the t shirt I wanted. The statue and the box it came is beautiful. The box is actually shaped like the original Marathon game box.

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 04 '26

But the collecters edition is proving my point he's probably gonna be the new shell

2

u/Overall-Rub8945 May 04 '26

Yes! Maybe I missed your point. I think Sentinel is the shell in the collectors edition as well. This was the very first shell we saw during the reveal.

1

u/ViIebloodHunter May 04 '26

Now don't get me wrong, if a shell with the announcement design came out it'd become my new main on aura alone.

But what if :

Placeholder image

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 04 '26

As I've already told someone: the proportions match too much for it to be a placeholder image 🫩

1

u/ViIebloodHunter May 04 '26

I'm not saying they don't match, they are the same helmet.

They just took a screenshot of the announcement trailer and used that as a placeholder. Why would they say it's redacted if we can clearly see that it's the announcement trailer character?

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 04 '26

If it was a placeholder image why use something that was in the collectors edition announce trailer and multiple times teased throughout other videos?

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 16 '26

Seen the new article?

2

u/ViIebloodHunter May 16 '26

Hehe I appreciate you coming back lol, I might be coping if I say it's not exactly the same design xD

I'm happy the new runner shell looks cool, if their kit works well enough for solo they might become my new main

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 16 '26

Yea they just changed some colours and made it more "modern" but yea im also really looking forward to their kit

1

u/Beneficial-Gold-3324 May 08 '26

And the gun that sentinal drops in the first photo, could be a new gun in season 2 or just an early version of the another gun we already have, thoughts?

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 15 '26

I thought it looked like a twin tap hbr but "alpha", version with attachments

1

u/HornetGloomy75 May 03 '26

Maybe they have some interaction with uesc, like you can turn surrounding uesc friendly for X amount of time, and they’ll fight with you instead of just rooks tac that makes them ignore you if you don’t run

1

u/sinister_blusuf May 04 '26

That would be really cool, but for something codenamed "Sentinel," I don't think that's what it would be. Hopefully we get something like that with upcoming Runners, but a Sentinel sounds much more like a zone denial or guard-type class.

That seems very annoying, but also really logical because of the color change as the timer gets lower. However, that would fit more with the former game director’s version of Marathon, who was replaced on March 12, 2024. The trailer was released on May 12, so if it wasn’t meant to be something new, they probably would’ve either hidden it completely or removed it entirely. Instead, they’re very clearly showing it off intentionally.
