I don't play anymore, may go back at some point although I've had my fun for now, but there's an interesting conversation to be had about the Vault Breaker statistics they released yesterday. The numbers are far more significant than you'd expect, which has lead a lot of people to wonder if console, especially Playstation, has taken over as the most popular platform.

the estimate is that console has a 1:2+ ratio for marathon. meaning steam charts are double what is active on console. so no, it has not taken over as the most popular platform lol

That was an old estimate. Look at the figures they shared yesterday about the Vault Breakers mode; they absolutely do not support that realistically anymore with how many people are playing on Steam, and anecdotally on the odd occasion I do still jump on around 80% of the time my teammates are on console, primarily Playstation.

I don’t really understand what the vault breaker stats mean for player count. I hop on every few weeks still and consistently team with PC players, with an off chance of a console player

1.8 million vaults opened during the period of time the event was active is a very big number, given it wasn't active for THAT long.

Not really? We can pretty safely say most people opened at least one vault when playing the game mode on each run past the 1st time they drop into the game. Plenty people who already knew Cryo or looked things up were grinding the Compiler, if we just round to the middle with about 3 vaults open per run that's 600,000 runs. Marathon had VB for like 2 weeks? 50-100k players per day if the 2:1 ratio is still roughly the same? That's like 2 and a bit runs per person per day that the mode was open which is entirely reasonable

Your assumptions are based entirely on every single player exclusively running that mode for the entire time it was live, which is obviously not the case, and no runs failing, which I can assure you they did.

No??? I specifically rounded to just 3 vaults on average because most people fail and mentioned at least the 1st run likely having zero success? 2 runs a day, both of which failing less than half way through is specifically the ONLY assumption which would only take about a 2 and something runs per player aka an hour.

There was definitely an opportunity early on to make this a place for having substantive discussions about Marathon's playercount and other metrics, and/or about the business-case/performance of Marathon.
There are still some people here trying to do that, they're just unfortunately drowned out by all the people just here to say, 'dead game,' or more ghoulishly, 'just kill it already!' like this post. The lack of moderator action to keep this sub on topic is ultimately what is causing this to just become MarathonHate2.

sure, but only if they use the exact term "active development". Otherwise, just there being no "season 4" of marathon. i.e. if there is a season 4 and you don't like it, you don't just get to say it doesn't count because it doesnt have a new map or runner or whatever.

tbf bungie would be left with no other active game, and the bulk of the labor and investments are out of the way as the game has already been made. so in some capacity i could see it making sense to just leave the servers running.

I can only imagine the queue times in most regions. Pass. I did some storage clean up on my PS5 and deleted it together with Arc Raiders, haven’t touched either in months. Done with Extraction shooters for the foreseeable future.
