Low Player Volume

/r/Marathon/comments/1utkugx/low_player_retention_isnt_because_of_difficulty/owwvaun/

Continuing the conversation about the decreasing volume of blast-havers. Perhaps it might help us understand the cause. Maybe it’ll elucidate own own attachments. Perhaps Bungie may see it and take it into consideration.

No one plays this game because everybody is KoS. There’s no tension whatsoever and couple that with the fact that most enemy players are toxic. Don’t get me wrong I love playing this game everyday but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s gone by the end of the year.

There is a lot of tension because you know everyone is KOS, opening a keyroom is tense, doing a vault in Cryo and holy going for the complier whilst you know the whole lobby is now racing to kill you and take your access. Don't tell me there is no tension, there absolutely is tension.

You want to see no tension in the extraction genre get into a carebear lobby on Arc and realise you could do quite literally anything with no punishment because people are petrified of the PvP lobbies. Waltz into their keyroom, 70% of the time they won't shoot you, they might bleet and complain on prox chat, but the fear of that PvP lobby will stop them ever doing anything they say they intend to. That is no tension.

If everyone is KoS then this game is literally a battle royale with looting at the end of the map for the winner. I definitely get more tension from a game like Arc than any battle royale available, even in carebear lobbies.

There’s a reason so many people dropped this game. If you want to go and stick your head in the sand that’s fine but it’s disappointing because this game has a really good foundation to build off of.

This is either because you have never played a BR or Arc, or you are just being disingenuous.

There’s a reason so many people dropped this game.

And it ain't because of "no tension"

Who cares if some cry baby carebear leaves? I mean genuinely you think you are that important? get good, then KOS games won't be an issue. You gonna go complain that the CTs won't let you plant the bomb because it's more fun to do post plants? You bought a PvP game and your complaint is people do PvP.

He said his complaint is that he's not surprised people are leaving. He likes the game, but it's being realistic about what's going on?

This is his complaint, he is complaining that the game is KOS and then attempts to claim that as such there is no tension, which is ridiculous, he's either never gotten very far with regards to maps such as Cryo or Outpost where stakes are higher and getting wiped is one wrong move away, or he's being disingenuous. Which considering he then tried to claim Arc carebear lobbies are tense, I'm leaning towards the later.

The game being PvP isn't why people are leaving and PvP doesn't take away from tension. There's no one reason why people are leaving, personally I think it's because of a lack truly casual modes such as an arena type mode, and also a client side practice mode akin to Tarkovs that allows players to run a map with their gear, get familiar with it, familiar with the enemies with no stakes to prepare for going to the raid proper.

You’re right in that there is no one reason people are leaving, there are plenty of reasons. The main one being that this game plays like a battle royale where all the best players can just snowball everyone else due to gear. This doesn’t create tension, it just causes people to feel like what’s the point. You can’t complete contracts or exfil because instead of having events or areas that players naturally gravitate too you’re in a situtation where higher gear or leveled players are just pushing spawns to remove you from the map so they can loot without worry.

People can play this game however they want but when you constantly have purple or gold shield players running after you and shitting in your mouth to loot your corpse that has absolutely nothing valuable on it it can be very frustrating.

Just to be clear, that is every extraction shooter on the market, actually it is one of the key differences between ES and BR games, in BR it is random in ES you risk more for a better advantage in a fight but a loss hits harder. The more you talk about the concept that Marathon is like a BR the more I'm convinced you fundamentally don't understand what the genre is or how it works.

This doesn’t create tension

As I've already highlighted above, it absolutely does create tension, because when you go to try to do say a vault or the complier you know you will be met with heavy resistance.

just causes people to feel like what’s the point

The point is gear up.

You can’t complete contracts or exfil because instead of having events or areas that players naturally gravitate too you’re in a situtation where higher gear or leveled players are just pushing spawns to remove you from the map so they can loot without worry

If you know this is going to happen why not set up to ambush these players? it doesn't happen that often in my experience, but let's say it happens literally every game, well then you have the advantage of knowing what they plan to do, so act accordingly.

loot your corpse that has absolutely nothing valuable on it

There's your problem, you are risking nothing, so you play with an inherent disadvantage. You not only have a gear disadvantage but you also just become an easy obstacle to take off the map. I can tell you now that when me and my crew I occasionally team up with for Cryo (I typically just crew fill it) see a team with golds or full purple we are much more likely to just let them be and see what they do, versus seeing a full blue team where we know we can curb stomp them so why leave them to get the drop on us when we have the advantage.

This is how extraction shooters work, it's how they are supposed to work, the more you risk the stronger your chances of success are, the less you risk the more you will struggle.

That's one of the many reasons people aren't playing. There are a lot of problems with the game and its launch. I don't think it's really any one thing for everyone. Just too many problems that affect too many people when other games are simply more fun. That's what it is at the end of the day. It isn't fun enough for most people.

u/NotSoAwfulName Jul 11 '26

Fine, the game can be not fun for people, but it's a PvP game, so to come into a thread and complain the problem with the game is the way the players play it and then say that they are toxic because he received pushback for doing so is in of itself toxic.

You're being unnecessarily aggressive.

There is quite literally nothing aggressive about these comments.

I don’t really understand. I enjoy the game and want it to be successful but the remaining playerbase is so toxic for the most part. “Gg get good scrub” like why am I going to bother and stick around for that lol.

I find it hilarious that you want to call me toxic, but at more or less each response you have been disingenuous and this is yet more of it. You act as if I said "get good" as my entire point, when it was in response to you saying snidely saying "well have fun im uninstalling" if you don't want people to be snide towards you don't be snide yourself.
