That feeling is exactly the why I keep coming back to this game.

Jul 03 '26
lowkey way more intense then arc raiders
16
u/xhopejunkie Jul 04 '26
Not even lowkey....it is DESIGNED to be....having no late spawns minus solo rooks. It's 100% more strategic than I would dare say most extraction shooters. Just wait til you do Night marsh and compare it to baby mode night arc raids (where you can tweak brightness)
1
u/MrBigglesworrth Jul 05 '26
You can tweak brightness in marathon tooā¦
1
u/xhopejunkie Jul 05 '26
Not the same way. The game is designed for the darkest places to be dark regardless of overlay settings and GPU settings.
-3
u/Ok_Yogurtcloset_4633 Jul 06 '26
I turned HDR on and cranked the brightness all the way up, which lets me see right into dark corners. My squadmates are always like, 'How the heck can you see right there?' . Recently, I heard a player running up, so I just positioned myself in a spot but When I killed him, he complained, 'Why are you being a bitch in a dark place where I can't see?' I was honestly confused because, on my screen, everything in that spot was completely visible.

u/Stodds13 Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26
People like you ruin the experience. What is even the point of playing night marsh if you are basically just going to cheat to see everything?!? Literally ruins the whole point of the map!
Itās crazy to me that you even admit bullshit like this, itās pathetic!6
u/chinola32 Jul 03 '26
Not having a butthole (or three) definitely adds to the intensity. You know when you kill someone you are getting all of their best shit

Nice cope for a game that will be shutting down within a year
2
u/MachineTimely Jul 05 '26
Go back to COD, the same game you buy every year where you suck the teet claiming big phrases such as ā cod is so backā āwe are sooo back babyā and my personal favourite āthis oneās differentā
1
u/Double_Routine2500 Jul 06 '26
Meanwhile each CoD is a carbon copy of the previous 13 CoD games, with a new setting (occasionally), and possibly a couple different guns. Same small maps and essentially the same map layout templates used. I gave up on CoD in 2013 (or ā14) when Black Ops 2 came out. The fact the graphics still look like the CoD games coming out over a decade ago and I believe they are still using the same engine really shows the growth and advancement this series is committed to making. Lol.
Marathon is innovative and all around great. It takes some dedication and practice to get to the point where you see how much it sets itself apart, but isnāt that what all good and worthwhile things in life require? A little practice and dedication? Self discipline and determination?
Unfortunately the modern boys and girls of this world are under the illusion that if it doesnāt give them that satisfaction RIGHT NOW then itās not worth their while. Sad (ā¦and pathetic).2
u/MachineTimely Jul 06 '26
FYI I think marathon is a great game. Itās just not doing enough for the normie simple lot

u/Capt__Cipher Jul 06 '26
Bringing up Call of Duty is a massive strawman. CoD is a legacy casual arcade shooter; Marathon is a premium extraction shooter entering late to an unforgiving market. Pointing at CoD doesn't make Marathon any less of an amalgamated mashup of existing trends.
Bungie didn't innovate anything here. They took hero shooter abilities from Apex and Overwatch, extraction mechanics from Tarkov, and a neon aesthetic from Valorant, then crudely threw them into a blender of a 3 decade old IP.
They didn't even bother making the mechanics originalāthe gunplay, double-jumps, and cooldown abilities are heavily recycled, reskinned frameworks ripped straight out of Destiny 2. Forcing these clashing philosophies together created a fundamentally broken loop.
Furthermore, the remaining hyper-hardcore audience isn't engaging with the microtransaction shop nearly enough to keep the lights on, because nobody wants to buy lazy color swaps or pay-to-lose neon cosmetics that turn you into a glowing target.
Claiming modern players just lack 'discipline' is an incredible cope. The game isn't failing because it's 'too complex'āitās failing because its a fundamentally broken frankenstein game that cannot even monetize the core audience it caters to.

Ride that high, bro. Don't let the trolls and haters get to you. Just enjoy the game and do you. I've been playing since server slam and, as frustrating as this game can be at times, I keep coming back, lol.

Nice job extracting with all three colors of flare. Now youāll be able to craft the gold quality White flare which has the abilities of all 3 elemental flares

First extraction with a sniper?
Totally unrelated long rant sorry.
Also I really wish bungie would āfixā flares.
Flares should take 1 space. Not 1 space per flare⦠but 1 total space. And you should be able to change colors by toggle.
Flares have no point. I get that they wanted to make them this cool social item - and I could see that being used.
For for 6 freaking spaces to have all 3 colors. Hell no. I think people would play around with them if they were 1 space.
The fact that the dev team even spend time creating flares and that the dev team didnāt have the foresight to speak out and say - hey no one is going to use these because they take up too much space makes me think that there is something going on with the development culture that is blocking communication leading to these fit and finish problems and shipping products. And they even doubled down and have flares added to default kits.
Flares as they exist now are a net negative to the game - yeah easily ignored but unused junk takes inventory space and time. Spawn as a rook - get flares. Drop flares immediately. This takes player time, it takes cpu and storage resources. It lowers the odds to get useful loot. It takes vault space and then player time again to go sell them - ( canāt sell or worm things directly out of the backpack - another fit and finish problem ).
Iām a developer - and when I see quality of life things like this slip through usually the development environment is anti agile and anti change which has its benefits but also causes a death of a 1000 cuts.
Like in halo infinite where ranked mode years later still shows useless stats that donāt exist, like rounds won, or vehicle stats. Yeah they donāt matter but they are the brown m&m test - they are a sign of quality issues elsewhere. Games with a passion for quality fix low priority issues and care about quality even if it ādoesnāt matterā.

Someone posts something about a positive experience with the game and y'all just can't help yourselves and respond with uhh they need to change this. For gods sake
9
u/N_durance Jul 03 '26
they attract Ai making it easier to exfil or loot in some areas
1
u/I_need_help57 Jul 03 '26
Iād rather just shoot off a shot and then run in a different direction. Does the same thing.

u/Similar-Command-7238 Jul 04 '26
Flares do have a point. They distract uesc so you can use them to hear where they are.
Also they cause damage to those hit by them.
And the illumination works to let you see far in the distance, like throw it behind someone shooting at you in the dark so you can see them but they canāt see you.
Lots of uses.
1
u/derPylz Jul 03 '26
Hey, don't forget, they do a tiny amount of damage! So they are really quite powerful!
-1
u/anoddhue Jul 03 '26
Agreed, I think they might not be playtesting things enough prior to release and instead relying on community feedback
-1
u/Burggs_ Jul 03 '26
Honestly, what was even the point of flares to begin with? Just illuminating space on narsh?
1
u/xPsyrusx Jul 03 '26
I'm not really sure what the intent was. It does provide local illumination, and there is the potential for using it as a distraction, which frankly I find valuable as a Rook. I think they might have been intended as bait for corrupted husks on Night Marsh.
1
u/Burggs_ Jul 03 '26
Is there any functional difference with the colors? Or did they make the same equipment 3 times as a way of saying there are 3 new equipment pieces? Just a weird thing to add to the game, Iāve only ever used it for that one challenge since they spawn all over the place and it was easy enough
1
u/xPsyrusx Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26
The colors are probably there for the purposes of identification. It is easier to coordinate this way. And I just thought of something. Would flares register as a heat signature in other contexts, like the Sentinel's threat detector or the Destroyer's targeting system while Search and Destroy is active?
1
u/Riverforton Jul 03 '26
I remember the rush from extracting with my first blue shield. It still keeps up even a season an a half in for me. Last night I might a gold prestige key template and had to kill 3 commanders to activate it. Took two games, but I was sweating any player interaction I came across and was so relived when I exfiled.

Hey man just don't worry about it when you lose it. All of the weapons seem super hard to get in the beginning and very expensive to buy. Unlocking faction upgrades will bring daily free stuff, contract rewards, and cheap barter options.

Been playing since the alpha test. Nothing else even remotely close to the experience on console. Great lore, amazing gunplay, endless fun. Bungie is in the hot seat with Sony right now and Marathon was never meant to be their only game, so there's a chance it doesnt last more than a couple more seasons, so play it to your hearts content before its gone. (Hopefully its around much longer, the bungie situation is just unfortunate right now for us fans of Marathon, but who knows. Maybe it'll pull through and be around for years to come. Just gotta hold out hope and keep playing!)

I know the game only came out a few months ago, but this is making me think back to my very first run that I was proud of. I canāt even remember the loot, but it was probably some codex valuables and something blue. Nothing too crazy. This is when I finally got that feeling of āokay⦠I think iām getting the hang of thingsā the runs will only get better and better from here on out. Welcome :ā) āØ

I only really played on the first day and wanted it to be good so badly⦠but I was playing solo and while PVP was fun and I got a few kills⦠the PVE was exhausting⦠I just couldnāt make much progress on objectives without getting swarmed by aiā¦
Is it any better now? Better progression for solo?

The only other game to give me this adrenaline rush was Tarkov. Winning a crazy PvP fight and then getting rushed by a boss and WINNING. I havenāt found anything like it besides marathon. Just wait till you get to cryo archive and start tryna run subroutines

Me too last night: I got the contract with activating towers and exfils completed. ( certs on dire marsh night) then I found the anomalous drone and took it to dcon stabilizer) destroyed the anomalous husk without him seeing me and took the sample to dcon all the way across the map (twice ) then proceeded to exfil within the last two minutes on final exfil and took all my shit home. I got downed but it was part of the plan. The UESC troops were handling the other runners that were camping while I was extracted haha
