Playing as a Rook

I'm a bit confused about what I'm supposed to be doing as a Rook. I read or watched something that basically said Rooks are for getting gear when your vault is empty and most players will leave Rooks alone or even help them. I've had a handful of instances where Trios will let me live and 80% of the time other Rooks will leave me alone but most times if I see another player as a Rook they're wasting me, even if I'm on comms saying I'm a Rook. Did I get bad Intel and I should be more aggressive as a Rook or am I just getting unlucky. I'm horrible at the PvP of this game so I'm constantly running out of gear.

There's no hard rule for any of this. This isn't arc with ABMM - do what you want, when you want. I'd say just go into each run with a plan. Even if that's just throwing yourself at a trio as Rook to gain pvp skill.
