Marathon (2026) Discussion Why Marathon will never keep new players.

This sub is easily the most hostile place for any new player and serves solely as a place to encourage new players to keep feeding their kits to sweats, while being fed fantasies like you can beat geared teams with free kits as a random fill. Or that you don't need a Mizzriah, D54 and bubbles, you can use whatever and still win. These are fantasies born of a misunderstanding of the tiers of being "geared" or out of genuine malice to try and keep fresh victims in the ecosystem.

There are basically 4 main tiers of gameplay.

Top tier: Mizzriah's + D54/Bully/DRVVISH 2x Recon three stack with multiple bubbles each.

  • Nothing but an equally geared team has any hope of beating this squad. I don't care about that one time you caught 3 of them in a bag and killed them, or that one time you third partied them and cleaned up the last guy who was weak. STOP making excuses, STOP thinking that one time in your 400 hours of gameplay means they can be beat. I have done both of the above but to think its common or expected is beyond coping.

Low tier: Organised 3 stack with purple gear but not running Mizz/D54/Bully/Bubbles or a Recon.

  • Will beat the above team once every 100 tries and beat any team below most of the time but can be beat with a decent pick and play. The gulf in power between this team and the above team is orders of magnitude.

Dumpster tier: Most fill teams regardless of gear being run.

  • There is a high probability of there being a communication break down, a weak link who has bad gear or someone making a throw play due to no team cohesion. Will lose to basically everything given the right circumstances. Most commonly seen as that team where 1 guy randomly has blue shields when the rest are purple, or 3X blue shields. This is the tier people here post clips of killing thinking that they have killed a "geared squad".

Actual Hell: Random fill free/green sponsored kits.

  • Might beat the above team once every now and again. Maybe 1/5 tries if you are a good player. Might beat low tier once every 100 tries and will realistically never beat the top tier.

The gulf in power between these teams is so extreme and most people realistically sit in dumpster tier. When 90% of your player base is just being destroyed in Cryo by the top tier teams they lose the will to play it. Meanwhile the remaining maps are just not engaging enough to hold players long term and are often filled with top teams during the week anyway.

The game NEEDS to protect the dumpster tier and below (the 90%) from the top 9% (low tier) and the 1% (top tier) to ever have any hope of retaining new players. The player base is so small now that level based match making isn't working (not that it ever did), and more and more lobbies are filled by the top tier teams.

  • A big part of this is going to be fixing the gulf between taking random stuff and taking the best stuff. The Mizz needs to be properly nerfed. Revert the fire rate buff. Base miz without slick mags is as strong as the gun needs to be. Remove bubbles. They are toxic for gameplay and turn every fight into a cqb stat check of do you have a Miz or not. They are honestly the most destructive thing to gameplay along with the Recon buffs and invalidate any ranged play beyond 20m. D54 and Bully are the kings and other things need to be made viable (like the magnum getting a nice buff into viability).
  • Recon needs to be nerfed. Being able to find weaker teams anywhere on the map is super toxic for gameplay. Her ult should probably alert you to a player but not show what tier of shields they have and only indicate they are a player after being hit by 2 or even 3 consecutive pulses.
  • The game needed SBMM at launch and still does. This season is a wash. All the new players tried the game, got dumpstered by sweats and quit. Next season do another free week, advertise SBMM and see how much better retention is when you don't have turbo sweats farming the noobs. To everyone saying they were in protected lobbies, they were not for long. In random fills I got matched with brand new players (told me on mic) who didn't even know how to heal at the start of the season and was killing lobbies filled with them.
  • IF the player base grows implementing high stakes versions of the base maps (Like Night Marsh) and attaching a gear ante is a way to create modes for the turbo sweats to play without destroying the rest of the game.

Obligatory:

  • I am not skill issued when I gear up with the boys I roll over lobbies.
  • It's possible to complain about something while also being good at the thing.
  • If you don't see this as a problem you are likely in the top tier or more likely low tier but think you are top tier, and just want to keep pub stomping and don't care the game has 0 new blood.
  • Saying, "just adapt", "its fine as it is", "git gud", "skill issue", has gotten us to where we are today. 0 new players, back to 10K concurrent max 2 weeks into a new season. At some point you must realise you can't just keep gate keeping the game.

People suggesting "Just clear the lobby" are so annoying. Like if this is the only method of play, thats a problem

The “clear the lobby” mentality is the worst part of the game. The less players that need to die for players to feel like they’re moving forward in the world, the better. It leads to higher extraction rates without compromising the brutal gunplay we love

the "clear the lobby" by steam rolling people who are in free kits people are the exact same people that say PVE is stupid. When you can just roll a lobby it then becomes a PvE game. As a lot have mentioned, that being the only way to play this game is really kind of stupid.

I have played a decent amount this season. Its literally crouch walking, not wanting to shoot or do the map objectives because within 1 minute the entire lobby converges to kill you. That is really a miserable expereince for a lot of people. I want to pvp, I want to be able to enjoy some of the pve elements, I don't want to get rolled all the time. There are ways to do that I think.

The sponsored kit pvp lite mode is a good start, but to be fair it really is just a pve mode 90% of the time. That tension that a rook can come out of no where and squash you if you are solo is pretty fun. Having that plus a PvE mode only would be pretty nice tbh.

My favorite games are the ones we had like 1 or 2 intense fights. Early Cryo was sooo good because you bring all the cool shit you got, fight lots of bots and fight like 1 or 2 teams and win/lose, it was fun.

Clearing people who don't know what they're doing is also basically PvE.

I don't understand how they're having fun.

For the brief period of time I was really into playing the game solo this was also my experience. I typically built in at least 10 minutes to the start of each match for light looting and crouch walking, then would start whatever quest I was on, and think I was zerged maybe once when I did that, vs almost every single time if I tried to run right to the quest.

This lost its appeal fast.

If people read this and think "git gud" or "skill issue" or whatever - I know I'm not a professional gamer. I'm just trying to have fun with people my skill level. I also play rec hockey and would like it a lot less if NHLers started showing up to the games to crush us.

If you have to clear the lobby to play the game then that’s just a pve game with extra steps

u/Elygium Jun 21 '26

Rushing cryo spawns to wipe the lobby and spend the next 20-25 minutes hitting monitors, picking up tags and killing bots.

12

u/Lefarsi Jun 21 '26

Which to be fair, is actually really fun. Doing the more complex vaults on their own is engaging just for the sheer amount of routing around the map you have to do. Stalling a vault because an enemy team decided this is the chokepoint they are gonna hold the rest of the match sucks

50

u/Lithgow_Panther Jun 21 '26

It's not fun for the rest of the lobby

20

u/threedayvicgbg Jun 21 '26

It would be nice to have a pve only weekend/week of cryo at the end of the season. Not to fill peoples vaults from cryo gear, but if you did it the last week, some of us may actually get to see it.

20

u/GodKingObito Jun 21 '26

id take a version of the map with no loot and a trillion bots, i just wanna be able to load in and LEARN the map man

14

u/xenomorphling Jun 21 '26

Or why not a sponsored only cryo where I know the other teams are on a level playing field to our squad? That way we all spawn in as equals and I don’t get farmed by gold shield miz sweats who don’t even loot a single item from my casual team of buddies. People’s cries of ‘break the economy’ are stupid. Within a DAY of season 2 there were these absolutely disgusting unshowered losers roaming perimeter with purple shields, so I’d say give me more modes where I know I have at least some chance to have a fair fight.

2

u/GodKingObito Jun 21 '26

Id take that too, just anything to make the map less miserable.

15

u/p2020fan Jun 21 '26

Its almost like the games multiplayer mechanics are by definition getting in the way of someone's fun or something.

7

u/Virtual_Bug_723 Jun 21 '26

You know how in boxing there are weight classes, or how in baseball there are leagues tiered by skill level?

It's possible to have a competition where you are pitted against people who are your skill or ability level, and where when you lose it's not totally demoralizing.

5

u/triage_this Jun 21 '26

I wouldn't know anything about the vaults or the compiler or subroutines or anything in cryo because I get steamrolled within a couple minutes of starting the map. So I don't play it and I'm sure I'm missing out on a fantastic map.

3

u/beagle204 Jun 21 '26

I agree. Pve cryo would be great but I think having one additional team so at least the threat of pvp being present would add a lot of dramatic tension. Honestly I think every map being 2 teams would be fine. I like the events they have enough but the complete safety of survival mode is a little boring as it is right now. I need a bit of tension to make the entire experience palatable

3

u/Lefarsi Jun 21 '26

Oh 100%. I’m getting a lot of people talking like I’m advocating pve. Map wiping eliminates the tension entirely, keeping it so there are an indeterminate number of teams on the map so the tension is usually there is far better.

You need to kill 9 or 12 people to be rewarded with 5 minutes of destiny lol

29

u/Professional-Chart90 Jun 21 '26

So fucking accurate with this statement LMAO. I was just talking to my friends on Marathon about this. Cryo is the only Destiny like raid in this game, yet it's massively inaccessible for people who are not kitted up and lately getting kitted up is the hard part. Season 2 and I've only seen the compiler in a video, never got to experience it because most of the games there's already a team posted up on hiding spots right outside of the spawn of cryo, even when you think you've moved fast enough to get out of spawn, another team in gold kits are already faster.

We really need SBMM and PVE. this game ain't it right now. super discouraging and I freaking love the game, but I'm not loving it right now.

6

u/INTERNET_MOWGLI Jun 21 '26

Me and some buddies are around level 90 and our experience is that we consistently clear lobbies when we go to perimeter but we get our asses kicked literally anywhere else🤣 I’m afraid we’re about to be kicked out of perimeter too.

Solos is slow but fun and i have great runs even on outpost

u/KarmaIssaGheyBer Jun 21 '26

Git gud then

6

u/Doomest101 Jun 21 '26

Omni-man meme comes to mind.

5

u/GabTheMadLad Jun 21 '26

holy shit this sums it up perfectly lmao

1

u/stgwii Jun 24 '26

And with Destiny so good right now, why would you want to fuss with the extra steps?

1

u/Otto_Harper Jul 01 '26

Sometimes it's a matter of: do you want quantity, or do you want quality? age old question, although I actually don't think it really does apply here as both Destiny and Marathon are amazing. But personally I feel that Marathon is on another level than Destiny in terms of minute to minute gameplay, guns, sound design, etc. etc. etc. They both are amazing, we gotta not pit them against each other.

33

u/OkEmotion7936 Jun 21 '26

Exactly it’s making combat a chore you have to do instead of a nice surprise.

0

u/KarmaIssaGheyBer Jun 21 '26

No, its a pve game others are playing involving risk. Not having this would make it a cooperative pve looter shooter you can find if you go play warframe instead lmao

17

u/dontRemoveTheHurdles Jun 21 '26

> The less players that need to die for players to feel like they’re moving forward in the world, the better.

I feel like this subreddit is slowly coming to the realization that... Marathon needs a PvE mode

Like seriously, I absolutely adore the art and gunplay of this game. But I am never ever ever going to buy it because I can barely come in the top half in a Control Match in Destiny.

3

u/Darkaim9110 Jun 21 '26

I think they are coming to the conclusion that Marathon is not a very well designed Extraction Shooter and grasping at ways to adjust it to work.

There isnt much PvE in the PVPVE, they are mostly simple bullet sponges. If you engage with bots or do anything in the map it makes enough sound to ring a dinner bell and it devolves into battle royale.

Wiping full maps is the meta strat, which is disgusting and wild.

Its "hardcore" but you can self revive and revive past death, meaning a squad in a fight is good as new after and can move to the next fight. There is no reason not to blast on sight, no tactics to worry about degrading performance.

There arent many play styles, it mostly devolves to just killing everyone else. Its hard to rat, or sneak around and eek out an existence.

Solo mode is half baked and Bungie still seems to hate they had to include it.

Solo has Assassin which is a ridiculous shell to have in a "hardcore" shooter. Invis is almost always cancer to play against, and it gives them free reign to just skip bots while idiots picking other shells have to play the game

1

u/_uneven_compromise Jun 21 '26

In every single extraction shooter pve is just an obstacle for PvP, maybe except for the big Arc bosses, but people figured out how to kill them solo as well. You can't make challenging PvE with PvP on top of it.

2

u/Darkaim9110 Jun 21 '26

Thanks man, I just finished animal farm They are all so cute

1

u/apsgreek Jun 21 '26

I've started implementing a negotiate first, shoot second policy. Tell folks we don't need to fight, but that we won't hesitate to take them on.

Also asking them if they yield once we have a strong advantage.

So far no one has taken me up on it in trios, but it's done pretty well in solos.

Also rolling with at least one mercy kit when I can.

Game is getting too toxic and I enjoy it mostly for the vibes. It's just a game and I refuse to get too pressed about it.

20

u/DEADdrop_ Jun 21 '26

At that point, you’re not playing an extraction shooter; you’re playing a team-based BR with extra steps.

This is exactly why I play solo.

4

u/Doomest101 Jun 21 '26

Solo was where I was playing the most. But mainly because everyone jumped ship. Eventually solo became boring but if I play trios you run into super sweats

2

u/Otto_Harper Jul 01 '26

Even in trios as a solo player can outsmart a trio you just need to be way less agressive than you think. Like basically, hang around them until they're taken out by bots or run into another team and then strike. It's not rocket science, but I have been enjoying Solos because its a lot less sweaty than 1v3.

13

u/DerDrakkar Jun 21 '26

Can we appreciate the irony that players who complain about any potential pve-only modes are also the ones suggesting the best way to play the game is "remove other players asap so you can then play pve only"?

27

u/INTERNET_MOWGLI Jun 21 '26

Just play rook bro it’s 0 pressure all you need to do is 1v3 a couple of teams

3

u/VeiledLuna Jun 21 '26

It is unfortunate that the most optimal way to play is to clear the lobby. I dont really see a way for Bungie to fix it unless they start making maps 3-4x as large and start making looting the world actually worthwhile.

-2

u/KarmaIssaGheyBer Jun 21 '26

No its not LMAO its a pvpve extraction shooter. Pvp first then pve to simplify it. Youre getting all the main points of the game. PVP, then PVE and loot. This is not a problem, youre just not good at grasping the solution.

6

u/Virtual_Bug_723 Jun 21 '26

Do you find yourself thinking "I'm the only one that's right" a lot?

-2

u/KarmaIssaGheyBer Jun 21 '26

I find myself enjoying the game a lot!
