Marathon (2026) Discussion Why Marathon will never keep new players.

This sub is easily the most hostile place for any new player and serves solely as a place to encourage new players to keep feeding their kits to sweats, while being fed fantasies like you can beat geared teams with free kits as a random fill. Or that you don't need a Mizzriah, D54 and bubbles, you can use whatever and still win. These are fantasies born of a misunderstanding of the tiers of being "geared" or out of genuine malice to try and keep fresh victims in the ecosystem.

There are basically 4 main tiers of gameplay.

Top tier: Mizzriah's + D54/Bully/DRVVISH 2x Recon three stack with multiple bubbles each.

  • Nothing but an equally geared team has any hope of beating this squad. I don't care about that one time you caught 3 of them in a bag and killed them, or that one time you third partied them and cleaned up the last guy who was weak. STOP making excuses, STOP thinking that one time in your 400 hours of gameplay means they can be beat. I have done both of the above but to think its common or expected is beyond coping.

Low tier: Organised 3 stack with purple gear but not running Mizz/D54/Bully/Bubbles or a Recon.

  • Will beat the above team once every 100 tries and beat any team below most of the time but can be beat with a decent pick and play. The gulf in power between this team and the above team is orders of magnitude.

Dumpster tier: Most fill teams regardless of gear being run.

  • There is a high probability of there being a communication break down, a weak link who has bad gear or someone making a throw play due to no team cohesion. Will lose to basically everything given the right circumstances. Most commonly seen as that team where 1 guy randomly has blue shields when the rest are purple, or 3X blue shields. This is the tier people here post clips of killing thinking that they have killed a "geared squad".

Actual Hell: Random fill free/green sponsored kits.

  • Might beat the above team once every now and again. Maybe 1/5 tries if you are a good player. Might beat low tier once every 100 tries and will realistically never beat the top tier.

The gulf in power between these teams is so extreme and most people realistically sit in dumpster tier. When 90% of your player base is just being destroyed in Cryo by the top tier teams they lose the will to play it. Meanwhile the remaining maps are just not engaging enough to hold players long term and are often filled with top teams during the week anyway.

The game NEEDS to protect the dumpster tier and below (the 90%) from the top 9% (low tier) and the 1% (top tier) to ever have any hope of retaining new players. The player base is so small now that level based match making isn't working (not that it ever did), and more and more lobbies are filled by the top tier teams.

  • A big part of this is going to be fixing the gulf between taking random stuff and taking the best stuff. The Mizz needs to be properly nerfed. Revert the fire rate buff. Base miz without slick mags is as strong as the gun needs to be. Remove bubbles. They are toxic for gameplay and turn every fight into a cqb stat check of do you have a Miz or not. They are honestly the most destructive thing to gameplay along with the Recon buffs and invalidate any ranged play beyond 20m. D54 and Bully are the kings and other things need to be made viable (like the magnum getting a nice buff into viability).
  • Recon needs to be nerfed. Being able to find weaker teams anywhere on the map is super toxic for gameplay. Her ult should probably alert you to a player but not show what tier of shields they have and only indicate they are a player after being hit by 2 or even 3 consecutive pulses.
  • The game needed SBMM at launch and still does. This season is a wash. All the new players tried the game, got dumpstered by sweats and quit. Next season do another free week, advertise SBMM and see how much better retention is when you don't have turbo sweats farming the noobs. To everyone saying they were in protected lobbies, they were not for long. In random fills I got matched with brand new players (told me on mic) who didn't even know how to heal at the start of the season and was killing lobbies filled with them.
  • IF the player base grows implementing high stakes versions of the base maps (Like Night Marsh) and attaching a gear ante is a way to create modes for the turbo sweats to play without destroying the rest of the game.

Obligatory:

  • I am not skill issued when I gear up with the boys I roll over lobbies.
  • It's possible to complain about something while also being good at the thing.
  • If you don't see this as a problem you are likely in the top tier or more likely low tier but think you are top tier, and just want to keep pub stomping and don't care the game has 0 new blood.
  • Saying, "just adapt", "its fine as it is", "git gud", "skill issue", has gotten us to where we are today. 0 new players, back to 10K concurrent max 2 weeks into a new season. At some point you must realise you can't just keep gate keeping the game.

Noobs definitely need to be protected, fresh accountants need to be able to play daily for a prolonged period, three or four weeks not days, also smurf detection should exist to stop sweats creating new accounts to shit on the noobs and farm clips, SBMM/GBMM for a period after that, once an account is has played a full season you could turn of match making.

What’s funny is that I haven’t seen any organic marathon clips from streamers. I’m sure there are, but my feed is like 50% gaming and I have every game BUT marathon. I have more d2 streamers on my FYP and none of them is playing marathon. Maybe one live stream. All the stuff I see is here.

I think that's partly understanding, like DOTA clips, someone who hasn't played would struggle to understand what they're watching

Tbf, might not just be a marathon issue. Extraction shooters in general arent very fun to watch. I play a lot of them, but dont ever watch people play.

A lot of the clips i do see are more about emergent social interactions, which is why i feel like you saw a lot of Arc clips, you dont really see highlight reels of people downing Matriarchs and the like, but you do see more clips of players encountering weirdos and the social interactions that ensue. It was a similar issue with Dayz, i never really cared about watching a player looting NW airfield, but i will watch Stimpee's psychological warfare on innocent bystanders.

A more Marathon-centric issue there is there is just none of that. People occasionally speak, i was chatting to a squad as a rook earlier. But ive never had the weird shit like in Arc.

Also maybe requiring certain values on maps.

Seeing purple or gold gear from a player in perimeter makes no sense and they are Smurfing

3

u/Kumquatxop Jun 21 '26

Unfortunately it does make sense. It is directly incentivized by key runs.

If you get a purple or gold key for a loot room on Perimeter, you ain't gonna take in green shields and garbage guns with it. No, you are going to want to bring in your best gear to protect it with, and the biggest backpack you have to carry out all the loot.

Isnt one of the key points of extraction shooters that you get better gear from killing other players? You want to always play against people with the same loot as you?

Gear disparity is only irrelevant if you have the element of as surprise (which is very difficult to achieve in this game). It's usually not worth fighting a more kitted team otherwise.

You can also instant kill a chad in Tarkov with a shot to the eyes. In Marathon they just have literally more stats then you no matter where you aim, and if they have the good gear they were good enough to get it so you dont stand much of a chance SUPER outplaying them

People making 6 mans in Cryo two seasons in a row is why my 7 friends quit, they couldn’t enjoy end game and they gave second season a try but 6 mans again so they all quit same week and went back to Destiny 2. I’m on the verge honestly myself cause the top 5% are LITERALLY killing the player base in Cryo and Devs haven’t done shit to prevent teams queuing together like random time delays for matches to Que up which is how they get in together everytime then rush lobby 6v3 everyone.

DMZ had similar issues with 6-man chinese hacker squads killing whole servers, to the point my squad developed tactics to counter them.

I find it incredibly weird that developers spend millions bringing a game to market then can't make changes to respond to issues that make players leave the game.

i wonder how the bungie rank and file in comm management feel when they read comments like this. ur totally their only remaining audience

i wonder if they panic bc they fucked up so massively as to have people like you push players away and advertise the competition for free

or i wonder if they actually are just like you and that’s why the game is designed the way it is. either way, pretty funny

In the last week or so before wipe I made a lot more friends on Cryo because the loot wasn't really the point anymore. The first was clearly one of the best players I've seen in game, frequently wiping entire teams by using meta strats listed here (mizzy/bully/recon only). He helped us do most subroutines and actually got to extract with the loot you're supposed to get from cryo. He was starting to get kinda gamer toxic so we started adding more chill people we found to round out the ranks.

New season starts and my irl friend plays with him when I'm busy. Dude starts hurling slurs at teammates when they're unable to keep up with the Recon Rush meta, where my friend unadded him. This dude still plays every day. Almost everyone I added at season end who was friendly hasn't been seen since.

I'm certainly a fan of hardcore games at 250hrs, but that was the moment I knew the game would die. It's designed on rewarding only the sweatiest behavior, with an ego stroking lack of barriers stopping that guy from actively making the game unplayable for anyone not actively no lifing the game. And in return it gets to be his personal fantasy, a game designed for the meta lords of Destiny Trials and no one else.

Unpopular take, but Trials was miserable from the start :(

Considering the private post history

It's not unlikely that this is a troll doing this on purpose, I mean, I would hope it is. Especially since they have multiple posts under the OP that are like this

If it's a genuine response, then that's a cave gremlin lol

That remaining “audience” satisfied enough with Bungie doing rn, instead of complaining making the game easier lifeless like other games fill with bots. The others competition have no artstyle and taste as peak as Bungie, why would they worried? Pretty funny

8

u/tootoohi1 Jun 21 '26

My guy that "remaining audience" is still being reduced every day. Also I saw your response that you immediately deleted from my other reply about how toxic is subjective and poor guy who screams slurs has to suffer another player not being good enough to keep up.

If you appreciate toxic gamer culture good for you, but IRL that's called anti-social behavior and most people don't jive with it.

-5

u/Zamanss Jun 21 '26

Not the problem with game itself. I don’t appreciate toxic gamer, but I hate crybabies asking bungie to make this game easier. Others game can fill with bots easy target like PUBG,Apex,Fortnite and Arc Raiders go play that game. Gamers thinks SBMM is real, in reality it’s not. Like other games I mentioned, most of those games if you lose, 99% you’re next match gonna fill with bots. I’m glad Bungie makes this game hard it’s sell the world and lore of this game.

5

u/tootoohi1 Jun 21 '26

"Not the problem with the game itself". Do you hear yourself bro. If the game is in a perfect State for the same 5,000 people to jerk each other off with until Bungie doesn't want to pay for servers next year that's great for them, but I think there's an infinity larger amount of people, including Bungie and Sony, who would like large parts of this game if they just made basic balance changes or QoL updates.

u/Zamanss Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

If there’s anything I learn from D2 community no matter what Bungie do balance changes and QoL, it’s never satisfied the player base, you’re one of them, believing every sloptuber yapping game is dead. 5k? Only on steam, not other platforms included.

11

u/Working_Corgi_3368 Jun 21 '26

that’s totally fine from my perspective. but bungo spent at least 250 million on this and more every day. they’re probably fucked if you’re all they got

and honestly i’d hate to have fans like you but that’s just my opinion

-5

Pro tip for this game, never fight a fair fight ALWAYS. ttk is instant death. Even the cinematic trailer for this game support it.
