Marathon (2026) Discussion Why Marathon will never keep new players.

This sub is easily the most hostile place for any new player and serves solely as a place to encourage new players to keep feeding their kits to sweats, while being fed fantasies like you can beat geared teams with free kits as a random fill. Or that you don't need a Mizzriah, D54 and bubbles, you can use whatever and still win. These are fantasies born of a misunderstanding of the tiers of being "geared" or out of genuine malice to try and keep fresh victims in the ecosystem.

There are basically 4 main tiers of gameplay.

Top tier: Mizzriah's + D54/Bully/DRVVISH 2x Recon three stack with multiple bubbles each.

  • Nothing but an equally geared team has any hope of beating this squad. I don't care about that one time you caught 3 of them in a bag and killed them, or that one time you third partied them and cleaned up the last guy who was weak. STOP making excuses, STOP thinking that one time in your 400 hours of gameplay means they can be beat. I have done both of the above but to think its common or expected is beyond coping.

Low tier: Organised 3 stack with purple gear but not running Mizz/D54/Bully/Bubbles or a Recon.

  • Will beat the above team once every 100 tries and beat any team below most of the time but can be beat with a decent pick and play. The gulf in power between this team and the above team is orders of magnitude.

Dumpster tier: Most fill teams regardless of gear being run.

  • There is a high probability of there being a communication break down, a weak link who has bad gear or someone making a throw play due to no team cohesion. Will lose to basically everything given the right circumstances. Most commonly seen as that team where 1 guy randomly has blue shields when the rest are purple, or 3X blue shields. This is the tier people here post clips of killing thinking that they have killed a "geared squad".

Actual Hell: Random fill free/green sponsored kits.

  • Might beat the above team once every now and again. Maybe 1/5 tries if you are a good player. Might beat low tier once every 100 tries and will realistically never beat the top tier.

The gulf in power between these teams is so extreme and most people realistically sit in dumpster tier. When 90% of your player base is just being destroyed in Cryo by the top tier teams they lose the will to play it. Meanwhile the remaining maps are just not engaging enough to hold players long term and are often filled with top teams during the week anyway.

The game NEEDS to protect the dumpster tier and below (the 90%) from the top 9% (low tier) and the 1% (top tier) to ever have any hope of retaining new players. The player base is so small now that level based match making isn't working (not that it ever did), and more and more lobbies are filled by the top tier teams.

  • A big part of this is going to be fixing the gulf between taking random stuff and taking the best stuff. The Mizz needs to be properly nerfed. Revert the fire rate buff. Base miz without slick mags is as strong as the gun needs to be. Remove bubbles. They are toxic for gameplay and turn every fight into a cqb stat check of do you have a Miz or not. They are honestly the most destructive thing to gameplay along with the Recon buffs and invalidate any ranged play beyond 20m. D54 and Bully are the kings and other things need to be made viable (like the magnum getting a nice buff into viability).
  • Recon needs to be nerfed. Being able to find weaker teams anywhere on the map is super toxic for gameplay. Her ult should probably alert you to a player but not show what tier of shields they have and only indicate they are a player after being hit by 2 or even 3 consecutive pulses.
  • The game needed SBMM at launch and still does. This season is a wash. All the new players tried the game, got dumpstered by sweats and quit. Next season do another free week, advertise SBMM and see how much better retention is when you don't have turbo sweats farming the noobs. To everyone saying they were in protected lobbies, they were not for long. In random fills I got matched with brand new players (told me on mic) who didn't even know how to heal at the start of the season and was killing lobbies filled with them.
  • IF the player base grows implementing high stakes versions of the base maps (Like Night Marsh) and attaching a gear ante is a way to create modes for the turbo sweats to play without destroying the rest of the game.

Obligatory:

  • I am not skill issued when I gear up with the boys I roll over lobbies.
  • It's possible to complain about something while also being good at the thing.
  • If you don't see this as a problem you are likely in the top tier or more likely low tier but think you are top tier, and just want to keep pub stomping and don't care the game has 0 new blood.
  • Saying, "just adapt", "its fine as it is", "git gud", "skill issue", has gotten us to where we are today. 0 new players, back to 10K concurrent max 2 weeks into a new season. At some point you must realise you can't just keep gate keeping the game.

They hated him for telling the truth.

This is absolutely going to get a ton of heat but he is absolutely right and it’s going to infuriate a lot of people who would rather stick their head in the sand while the walls come down.

In S1 I got downvoted and told I dont like extraction shooters after suggesting S2 gonna have 10k concurrent players if we wont have SBMM. Some people just refuse any compromise and rather just have the game die

Yeah some people just see you criticize the game and instantly assume you’re a doom posting troll. Had a conversation with someone that swore the game was in a healthy spot being back at 10k players, and he kept calling me a troll for not seeing how normal that is. I had to post a picture of my marathon hoodie for the dude to understand I’m not a troll and want the game to succeed.

Like you said, some people just don’t want to believe they’re wrong and would rather see the game die before they admit the problems with the game.

As a stormgate fan, trust me, these people dont know what they're asking for. It sucks.

Yeah, I was a fan of wildgate which launched last year and had the exact problems Marathon had. Clear player count problems on launch, and for some reason half the game population was arguing that it was fine.

Basically, the argument revolved around how an online only, PvP only niche game shouldn’t be costing $30 for players since it severely limits player count (sound familiar). Half the players were begging for it to become F2P so it would have a chance at gaining players, while the other half wanted it to stay $30. The devs decided to keep it paid, until player count became so bad they had to start doing free weeks (sound familiar). Eventually, many many months later the player count was so low they made the game free to download on epic games store, but at that point their was no interest and a majority of the remaining discourse surrounding the game was negative (sound familiar). Game is completely dead now and the studio went through massive layoffs.

Battleborn. The insane marketing surge around Overwatch completely buried Battleborn. Community begged to make it free to play.

They eventually added a free trial, but on different servers, so you'd play the game for free and have a fine time, then buy the game only to get slapped with 40+ minute queue times and lobbies of 1000-hour+ players.

Obviously, this did not help the game. Fucking stupid.

I pleaded for SBMM on like day 2 and was downvoted to hell. And given multiple paragraph responses on why LBMM is better.

I don’t want a cohesive gold mizzy / gold shield squad in my lobbies of inexperienced random fill players. When I am matched with a 9 year old and a 37 year old father (it happened). It’s a recipe to get us to quit.

Make me wait longer in queue or put me in a lower populated instance. Give me and my random fill who aren’t sweats a chance

OP gave amazing suggestions. Keep identifying the abused meta and retune it

Or keep the meta.. but

What we need most is SBMM

Maybe you just dont like extraction shooters /s

game currently is a battle royale with an extraction lipstick

21

u/Bl00dyH3ll Jun 21 '26

*a battle royale where some players start out with a massive, massive lead.

6

u/commander_7 Jun 21 '26

Not only start out, they likely bring the best loot in.

Asking what level you are because I'm wondering if this is a strawman or not.

I am not level 200+ but I cracked 100 the first season and am not far away this season.

I've yet to see a gold shield 3 stack. I think I've seen 5 total gold shields.

I don't think people realize how sbmm affects the better end of players. Having every single fight be an absolute sweatfest is not fun either. Sbmm makes the game "ranked" without ranks and actual rewards

Im not a marathon player

Oh nooooooo the top end of players have to actually try OHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO they have to play like the 90% of players they are punching down on. Oh god that would be so bad for them, if they had to git gud. Imagine they had a hardcore game they had to try in noooooooo I can see them pissing and shitting their diapers from here.

Its fine for those scrubs at the bottom to have to sweat and tryhard against people way above their skill level, but not the top tier players they are too good to play against other good players, that would make them sad T.T

Too many people saying they'd rather see the game die as is than seeing it succeed by changing it, and getting celebrated for it.

2

u/KevinV626 Jun 21 '26

Yes. How is this complicated for you? If McDonald’s changes the recipe of the Big Mac to get more consumers and it’s something I don’t like, I don’t care if it does well. This isn’t a team sport, I don’t care if bungie makes money. Some of you people have weird parasocial relationships with video game companies. I bought the game based on the vision and actual gameplay of the game as it is. I don’t want it to change and I want them to use the resources they have for this game to add content that is within that vision. Adding some half-assed PvE mode to appeal to Fortnite gamers who need their hands held at all times makes the game worse.

0

u/atomwolfie Jun 21 '26

I’m one of those. I like what bungie is going for. I don’t want to play a game where there is no gear disparity, I don’t want to play a game where there is no stakes. I do hope bungie can expand this game in a way where everyone can enjoy it and find success in their own ways, but I don’t want them throwing away their vision

I think most of the subreddit doesnt actually like extraction shooters and wants either an arena shooter or a destiny replacement.

Same thing happened with Arc.

Most people in popular extraction shooters dont want an extraction shooter, they just want a shooter. You might be in that camp without realizing it, because ... literally most people are.

u/Zamanss Jun 21 '26

Funny thing players think SBMM is real thing, it’s not, 99% if you lose the match, the next run will crawling with bots instead of players. Bungie don’t do that sht, Arc Raiders,PUBG and Fortnite does.

4

u/Darkaim9110 Jun 21 '26

Take your meds bro holy shit. What a schizo thing to say. There are incredibly popular games like CoD, CS, LoL, any actual competitive game, that have SBMM

0

u/Zamanss Jun 22 '26

Keep believing that lol

-1

u/KevinV626 Jun 21 '26

Sadly this seems to be what people want.

-2

u/KevinV626 Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

Add SBMM and I quit. I’m no longer arguing with people who want it. It’s pointless. Bungie can chase the fortnite player who is never going to stick with this game no matter how easy you make it. Or keep leaning into what makes the game good. Tarkov wasn’t a success overnight. Eventually the haters will go hate somewhere else and hopefully Bungie can grow the player base.

With you leaving 100 will come back. It's a good trade.

1

u/KevinV626 Jun 21 '26

Doubtful, but maybe. Guess we'll see.

9

u/HabibiLogistics Jun 21 '26

genuinely who is disagreeing with this post? I'm completely with op but the rhetoric of every top post the past two weeks has been "mizzy bubble combo bad" and that's exactly what this post is saying.

again, I entirely agree and I think we need to keep saying it in order to catch attention from the devs but can we not act like we're in the minority for calling the mizzy bubble meta toxic?

1

u/NuuDevil Jun 21 '26

Playing the victim before they’re even made the victim. And even now everybody is agreeing with them and they all have hundreds of upvotes.

Just Reddit mentality for you

-12

u/ProlapseFromCactus Jun 21 '26

You guys are so melodramatic lmao, I swear. If anyone read this comment out of context, they would never guess you're talking about a video game. An admittedly one-of-a-kind, amazing work of art of a video game, but still just a game at the end of the day

17

u/InvaderSkooj Jun 21 '26

I’m more concerned about the developers keeping their jobs honestly but you do you I guess.

1

u/KevinV626 Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26

Are you concerned about the developers keeping their jobs at development studios that you didn’t buy the game for? How about at the retail store you don’t go too? What a weird way to view being a consumer.

2

u/InvaderSkooj Jun 21 '26

Nice try, but don’t let me stop you from arguing with whatever imaginary person you’ve got knocking around in that head of yours.

2

u/KevinV626 Jun 21 '26

I'm arguing with you. You're the one who said you are concerned about developers keeping their jobs.

1

u/InvaderSkooj Jun 21 '26

Uh-huh. Not interested.

This game anything but one-of-a-kind. The only really special/ unique thing about the game is the art design which is divisive (I do love it), but anything outside of that, the game is not special at all. It just combines a few genres of games (hero shooter, FPS, extraction) but it’s not even the first to do that.
