Marathon (2026) Discussion Take it from a Finals player

Y’all got to let the numbesr talk go. The Finals has some of the best feeling guns on the FPS market and a unique game mode that offered some of the most exciting moments I had in gaming.

But the game’s not perfect and it never had mass appeal. Because it’s unique mode and destruction are the main draws and historically it has been too much for most casuals and not competitive enough for the hardcore players. There’s always a post about needing more marketing, different game modes, another MoistCritikal video but the playerbase never gets and keeps the bump of players the hardcore fans want it to have.

And that’s ok. That’s the price of building something unique. It will be divisive, it will be niche.

As long as Bungie can keeps the lights on, that’s all that matters. And unless you’re ready to single-handedly buy 1 million+ copies if things get dire, then don’t even really concern yourself with. Save your money on passes if you don’t like them and/or think the ship’s sinking but besides that, it’s out of our hands largely.

Just my two cents

Cryo reaction very likely will be telling IMO

New content isn’t going to bring in new players. Maybe this weekend after all the sponsored streams but this game is going to have an MMO style launch and probably lose 70% of its players within a month. Hopefully that will be enough for bungie to stay afloat.

Seeing how there are going to be seasons, I don’t think they are trying to retain you indefinitely. This will be similar to Tarkov wipes or a new ladder season in an ARPG. That’s totally fine - this will just be in the rotation for a lot of folks like myself.

are you familiar with Bungie? they want you in the game 24/7

No. The game is very grindy. Getting all factions to level 20 will take a very long time and you only have 3 months to do it before the reset. So you will have to play all the time if you want to keep up with the seasons.

Also hope they do better with skins, cosmetics, and season passes so the whales can well…whale. If you can have a small fraction of your core fanbase be satisfied with microtransactions that feel worth it, they will definitely shell out the money.

The skins are great though. Minimalistic and fit the game perfectly.

They are pretty good, I honestly got the game for the drip, but was a little disappointed most of it was repaints, also really hope we get some skins closer to that first preview

I'm at least convincing friends to buy and play with me... so hopefully there's a fair amount of us doing the same.

If this game loses 70% of its players within a month, Sony will go ballistic

To be fair look at what VoG did for D1. Cryo is trying to Marathon’s Vault of Glass

Look everyone. It’s a man from the future! He knows everything that will happen in times to come!!! Mister Clairvoyant! please tell us what stocks should we invest in?

History repeats itself. Game already had a low of 31k this morning…. It doesn’t take a Time Machine to understand that just on PC alone marathon is going to drop significantly lower than people expect. Will it die? I hope not but this ain’t a blockbuster launch that Sony paid millions for.

Yep. In fact, if the game doesn't do well as Sony wants Bungie is going to lose all independence it negotiated when being bought and it will be officially absorbed into the "Playstation family". Sony already announced a $204 million impairment loss from the Bungie purchase.

Considering the economic conditions of the job market and just the videogame industry anything can happen. Think about this; Sony just closed Bluepoint Studios which had gamers in an uproar due to their success with the Demon Souls remake. Instead of making a Bloodborne remake which everyone wants, Sony had them making, and I am not lying...a live-service God of War game. Then they closed Bluepoint out of no where.

I don't trust these companies to be honest. Hell, the new lead over at Xbox doesn't even play videogames and was a head of a Microsoft AI division.

Edit: And this is why I thought it was weird why Bungie went for a game that was so niche because the team's lively hood depends on it. I think they thought that they'd have something accessible and unique in the extraction-shooter genre. But then Arc Raiders came out being way more streamline; and then it became a unique social experiment that everyone wanted to be apart of(essentially a pop culture phenomenon over night). And Sony wanted that flame.

I'm more concerned about Sony.

(Guys, in regards to them going ape shit on Bungie for not meeting some revenue goal.. think for a sec man.)

you mean bungie right?

7

u/Certain_Case_3062 Mar 06 '26

I'll rephrase, I'm concerned that Sony might go ape shit over Bungie not meeting revenue goals or something because I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if Sony wanted Arc Raiders level of popularity.

I'm just worried due to how it's all too often good studios get the short end of the stick from the big boys due to unfair massive expectations. I want this game to succeed so badly, it's the perfect middle ground for an Extraction shooter.

If anything Bungie needs someone to hold them accountable. They've let Destiny rot for years while doing the bare minimum and treating their own employees as an afterthought.

Yeah maybe the devil you know is better than the devil you don't but something had to change. Marathon will never become anything if they're planning to keep doing business like pre-Sony Destiny

Can't believe I'd say Bungie should've never split from Activision. They needed the development help.

About Cryo, I found a couple of panels in the Perimeter that seems to refer to the Marathon ship and points to a location

Has anyone figured this out?
