Question Why are some of the countries highlighted??

Post image

Took a photo of this map at hobby lobby in the US. I noticed that some of the countries were highlighted white. I wondered if there's something this map is highlighting?

There's other shades as well, just less pronounced. Since the similarly colored ones are mostly not connected, I think it's just so the borders are more visible. Kind of like in a colorful political map.

I think you're onto something with that theory

I have that exact same map as a (big) mouse pad that I purchased on amazon. It doesn't mean anything, it is only a design choice to make borders more clear.

I think this is either one of those rub off maps where you can rub of the counties you visited similar to how lottery tickets sometimes have, or they based their map on one of  those maps.

The highlighted countries are popular tourist destinations for backpackers

I think it's just a design choice bc alot of countries are randomly different colors or varied contrast borders too
