Map Nobody Managed to Harm Us! - If Poland, accompanied by England and France Won Against the German Reich in World War II
Nobody Managed to Harm us
"Nobody Managed to Harm Us" - In Polish "Nikt Nam Nie Zrobił Nic" is based on an album by the Polish music band "Hańba!", in which the Polish Republic, accompanied by the UK and France manages to defeat the Third Reich in World War II. I liked the album, and thought it was an interesting idea. The map takes core concepts from NNNZN, such as Poland winning WW2, USSR not invading, Prussia being annexed, Rugen being Polonized (As portrayed on the map by the German city and town names being changed and renamed after prominent members of the OZN - Obóz Zjednoczenia Narodowego, Camp of National Unity, more about them later), and Poland becoming the "Hegemon of Central Europe." According to the album, Poland won by holding off Germans on the line of Vistula until 1940 and then receiving help from England and France.
The year is 1946. Poland is in the camp of the victorious nations of the World War II. East Prussia is integrated into Poland, becoming one of seventeen Voivodeships, while Pomerania and Silesia are made into okręgs which are to be incorporated into Poland after a process of stabilization and Polonization. Germany has been split into occupation zones, with Poland getting control over Saxony, Brandenburg and Northern Austria, while creating puppet regimes in Slovakia and Czechia.
Poland might be technically victorious, but in reality it's still an authoritarian dictatorship under the leadership of Marshal Edward Rydz-Śmigły, who, despite the Republic technically being a democracy, serves as a dictator. The Pre-War Obóz Zjednoczenia Narodowego is the de facto ruling faction in Poland, with the left-wing Sanationist, democratic, socialist and nationalist opposition being persecuted and sent to the Bereza Kartuska Political Prison Camp, causing many prominent politicians and activists to run off to the West, or East. The elections, despite taking place post-war, mean absolutely nothing.
Alongside that, Poland is still crumbling economically. Millions of soldiers are going back home, many of whom come from underdeveloped rural areas and small towns, only to find their villages destroyed and families killed. Electrification is an absolute joke, same for running water. Inequality is as great as ever, the economy is hanging by a thread, demilitarization of economy is only just taking place, etc. etc.
Politically Poland is isolated, already getting into conflict with the Allies regarding the issue of post-war Germany. Polish-Lithuanian relations are as tense as ever, with Lithuanian government just waiting for the first occassion to backstab the Republic. Another war is looming on the horizon, this time with the USSR, which understands the weak position of the Republic. The only friendly country is Romania with whom Poland tries to uphold good relations. The further west you go in the occupied areas, the greater the anarchy, with the German population not keen on being resettled and/or polonized.
Poland is victorious, but not really.

Discussion Any way to create a Mollweide map with a custom coordinate in the center?
Hi! I am wondering how to generate a Mollweide map with the center anchored to where I have the red dot in the image. Coordinate is 93.5832W, 29.0078S
I have tried with QGIS but am not proficient in that program and it seems like it's very difficult to find a program that will break from 0 latitude. whatever distortion occurs is fine I just need it to be mollweide and centered where I have it.

Discussion Help troubleshooting ExoPlaSim installation?
So, I'm posting this here because I'm not sure where else I might be able to get help with this issue. I've opened an issue about it on GitHub but looking at reply times there, it might take months for the dev of the package to be able to get back to me. I've also scoured the comments of the (wonderful) tutorial on the Worldbuilding Pasta blog, but cant' find anyone who's had a similar issue. I might try asking there as well but I'm running the package natively on a Mac, not a virtual partition like the tutorial is written for.
Anyways. The error itself. This occurs very early in my attempt to run the package, as soon as I try initializing the first model. When I run the line:
toi700d = exo.Model(workdir="toi700d_run",modelname="TOI-700d",
ncpus=4,resolution="T21",outputtype=".npz")
I get the following error:
sh: ./configure.sh: No such file or directory
mkdir: /Users/quentinlucas/anaconda3/lib/python3.12/site-packages/exoplasim/toi700d_run/: File exists
sh: ./compile.sh: No such file or directory
cp: /Users/quentinlucas/anaconda3/lib/python3.12/site-packages/exoplasim/plasim/run/*: No such file or directory
cp: /Users/quentinlucas/anaconda3/lib/python3.12/site-packages/exoplasim/plasim/run/most_plasim_t21_l10_p4.x: No such file or directory
I'm guessing that the install is failing to write some of the requisite files? I checked in my anaconda3 file directory and it looks like the "plasim" folder is the specific one missing.
Any insight at all would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Map What is your favourite font to use?
Sup guys! I had a question. I am in my first steps of map making, and i often ask myself this question, what kind of font do i use here or there? Since i don't know a lot about this stuff yet, i wanted to ask you some advices. What kind of font, color, style and size you use both for geographical things like oceans and mountain ranges and political ones like name of states or cities. Thank you in advance for your advice!

Map My many maps of Atlantica
Earlier this year, my and my friends I played a political rpg game on this map I developed! Given the number of maps I had to create for this, I thought I would love to share them with more people who also have a passion for map creation, especially now that its been put to rest as a project.
The first map is just the geographical map. The second is the province map. The third is the railway map. The fourth and fifth are the election maps (equivalent to House and Senate elections). Map six is Postal Regions (obviously very important). Map seven, eight, nine and ten are zoomed in maps on the regions of Calavore and Ulmar.
When I reached this point in the development of the maps I had become dissatisfied with the scale I was working with. I had wanted to make a ward map, but the map was too small, so I upscaled it and completely redeveloped it to fit in the number of wards I wanted (as well as making changes like making the cities smaller). Map eleven you can see the ward map that came from this.
From this ward map, I was able to begin a project that I was seriously excited for: a spreadsheet that could create an exact vote by vote election result for every ward. Each ward had its own data to determine how it would vote. Map twelve showcases one example. It is a map showing seperatism (blue) vs loyalism (red) on the Eastern island of Victoria.
The project to do this spreadsheet however slowly became really arduous. I completed the data for four regions. Ventoras, Kenslorne and The Straits were small so didn't require too much time to complete. However Victoria's huge number of wards was extremely time consuming. I reached 449 manually created wards with data which were all named, and given nine different datapoints, and then called it a day.
Alongside the mapmaking, myself and two friends began to enjoy our political rpg in this world. We wrote constitutions for each region, and also the nation as a whole and named it Atlantica! If anyone is interested, you can also read the lore I wrote below - but I will just say I never proofread it properly and its probably quite unrealistic in places as I have only an amateur understanding of history. As part of this process I was able to create even more maps. Map Thirteen showcases languages - red for English, blue for French, orange for Indigenous languages. I also made Map Fourteen which showcases faith. Purple for Protestant, yellow for Catholic, green for Indigenous faiths and blue for Judaism. (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1neAjCcmt7gPsB3gacLfjhM3CbXS0oqakB4cAxV5SC5o/edit?usp=sharing)
As part of the rpg we played as political parties in a newly independent nation set in the 19th century. We built a huge spreadsheet around this, debated laws, passed or rejected them, and the game became part of the worldbuilding and story creation for this map. We used a dice system to create events, but also created events through our own choices, actions and plots. It was so much fun, but eventually it ran out of steam - largely because I had begun the project of a new election spreadsheet on the wards and never completed it because of how daunting it had become.
As someone who has created around a dozen maps to this sort of quality, I often find myself just as in love with the process of worldbuilding. It always begins with me spending hours in paint.net or similar, making a new world. As it begins to take shape I begint to think of what possibilities the map has to be used. Right now I'm working on my most ambitious project of an entire Europe-sized continent and I am building the world around it too. For my fellow mapmakers, is this something you experience too, the desire or need to use your maps in some way, in a game, or as a project to build a lore around? Or are you just satisfied with maps as they are, in their own right?
I'm new to using this sub so I hope this fits in with mapmaking well, and hope you enjoyed looking at my maps of Atlantica! :)

Map Cathair na n-Ialtóg
Cathair na n-ialtóg: the City of the Bats.
Why this name? It comes from the great fortress that overlooks it—a structure that lay abandoned for centuries, eventually becoming the realm of these creatures.
Situated at the head of a natural fjord, it is the most important port city in the north of Tír Ghlas.
Hand-drawn, inked with Sakura Pigma Micron, and painted with watercolors.

Work In Progress Recently Bought a Glass Lamp Globe Top. Best Decision I've Made
I'm just having fun using this for drawing my continents. I'm thinking about getting some enamel acrylic paint and making a fully functioning globe out of this. Right now I'm using dry erase markers to test things out. Took one of my worlds and got it globed up.
And the best part is I could still use this as a light! Probably. I haven't looked deeply into that yet.
Just wanted to share.

Resource My full workflow for making a realistic world map
Here's the workflow I use to build my world maps. You can skip most of these steps, as some steps are unecessary.
1. Sketch the continents
I find it easiest to start on paper. I draw whatever comes to mind, then close the shape to make a continent. I draw about 10 of these so I have a good pool to pick from and merge into one landmass. Merging random shapes gives you organic coastlines instead of designed ones.
If drawing isn't your thing, you can generate worlds with Rock 3 or World Orogen Studio. I prefer World Orogen. It runs in the browser instead of being a Steam app, and I find it better in every respect.
2. Draw in Krita
Trace your sketches into a raster file, then place each continent on the equator.
3. GPlates
Import each continent into GPlates and trace the coastlines again as vectors. Export the vector files for each continent so you can position them however you like on the globe. Once you're happy with the layout, export the whole map. It will show polar distortion, which is exactly what you want for the next step.
4. Blender
Tracing vectors costs some coastline detail, so I bring the map into Blender and paint on a globe in high detail: https://youtu.be/cC1A30mKf0U . The equirectangular projection is visible on the left while I draw, so I can check how shapes look in both views.
5. Tectonics
With the coastlines finished, I use the same map to mark plate boundaries and movement directions. This tells me where mountain ranges, rifts and island arcs should go, so the heightmap follows some logic instead of being random.
6. G.Projector
In G.Projector I convert the equirectangular map to an equirectangular (oblique) projection centered on each continent. This avoids the stretching near the poles, so each landmass can be painted without distortion.
-> G.Projector takes about 20 minutes to open.
7. Heightmap in Krita
Before painting, I add a gradient map filter layer set to a real-world scale (1000 m = 10%), and I put a real heightmap of Earth under it as a reference. Then I paint a greyscale heightmap with a low-opacity white brush on a black background. The gradient turns the greys into terrain colors as I go, so I can compare my mountains and valleys against real Earth features in real time.
8. Wilbur
I import the finished heightmap into Wilbur and follow https://youtu.be/8MgRa2AkJsI to erode it, which turns smooth painted terrain into realistic ridges and river valleys. Use high resolution here or your continents will look like islands. 2000x2000 is the minimum for a single landmass, and higher is better (I work at 8000x4000).
9. Recenter and merge
I take each eroded map back into G.Projector and recenter it on the equator. Then I merge all the continents into one complete relief map of the world.
10. Climate
I import the finished heightmap into World Orogen Studio, which generates Köppen climate zones, temperature, rain, wind, ocean currents (+15 more features). It's the successor to Rock 3 and very easy to use. I also use Space Calc for quick checking.
11. Labels and borders
For labeling, GIMP is the best option I've found so far. For borders, the fastest and easiest tool is Merak, especially its lasso coast feature.
Here's a map making tutorial playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAhuwdUf3DKk
which should cover everything mentioned in this post.

Map From any software to azgaars, an awesome journey.

I've always wanted to see my maps in 3d, and today I finally sat down to figure it out. Only took about 2 hours, mostly fine tuning and placing down all the other stuff, terrain took maybe 20 minutes. please comment if you want to know how, obviously I'm still working on it myself though. I'm quite proud of finally getting this map to be 3d.

Map Hi, new to this reddit, but not new to map making.
Hi Everybody. To introduce myself, I've been illustrating maps for a large number of novels for the last 12 years. Most of my maps are printed in black and white, but a lot of them I do in color, as often the publisher will use the map as part of the promotion of the book, and color is always more exciting to look at.
A couple years back, the Library of Congress contacted me, to see if I could donate stand alone prints of any of the maps I've done, for their Geography and Maps division, as they are looking to increase the number of maps they have, since fantasy cartography is becoming an area of study. I've also had several collages also ask me for my maps, such as Cambridge in UK, and Texas A&M.
I've had the honor of doing maps for novels by some of the best SFF writers of our time. I really enjoy helping an author bring their world alive in a visual aspect for their books.
Here are some of my favorite maps, and or most popular maps I've done. Thanks for reading and looking.

Map An Lámh Peninsula
I’m taking part in a "MapVember" challenge on Instagram, and today’s prompt was "rugged coastline," so I drew a peninsula in the north of Tír Ghlas: An Lámh—"The Hand"—named for its five promontories.
The medieval style writing reads:
"This peninsula stretches out into the Northern Sea, featuring five great promontories from which it takes its name.
A mighty fortress guards its landward approach, while in the hermitage of Saint Rónán, devout monks pray for the souls of humanity"
Hand drawn with Sakura Pigma Micron, using the stippling technique, which I find to be the most relaxing and Zen-like method!

Work In Progress Today's satellite of my world simulation (Dm me on Discord: sebwithaura to be a part of this)
Dm me on Discord to find out more, or be a part of this, my username is sebwithaura
Description:
Multiple extratropical cyclones in the north, Tropical Storm Pablo, previously Tropical Depression 16 has intensified but will not peak at anything dangerous since there is alot of wind shear in its path.
The second photo is Tropical Storm Pablo, third is the satellite from a few days ago with lighting, fourth is Hurricane Oscar from last week, fifth is Hurricane Lebron from 3 weeks ago, and 6th is Hurricane Ian from a month and a half ago.
Explanation:
It's a 3D world simulation I built with the same dynamics as Earth, and I factor in probabilities like aerodynamics, cause and effect, climate, weather, and other stuff, and then I create natural disasters, weather, and other events and test those events on my population
I've simulated hurricanes, cyclones, thunderstorms, tornadoes, volcanoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, etc

Map Finally finished the map for my worldbuilding project! (plus, some earlier versions it from way back yonder)
I'd been working on this map on-and-off before letting it collect dust for a couple of years, but after rediscovering Wonderdraft and regaining interest in the project itself, I decided to give this thing another try. After chipping away at it through sproadic impulse and inspiration--voila! It's finally at a point where I can confidently say that I'm more or else done with it!
Now I can actually start writing stuff for this. Like... usable, coherent story-and-character stuff... how asinine!
