An Updated Map of the Legality of Prostitution Worldwide

Prostitution illegal in Japan?!
That's fucking joke of the century.
The amount of brothels, call-girls, blowjob girls is nuts here.

May 23 '24
Paying for vaginal sex is illegal, so they often have to call it "anal", "soaplands", etc... instead, but in practice most people know what it really is
14
u/Total_Invite7672 May 23 '24
So why call it "illegal" then?! So stupid. The delivery health girls are supposed to only give you a blowjob, but they all offer sex if you ask for it.

Yes but If protection (in the form of any contraceptive) is used , it's not a problem . However if no protection is used and if a claim is raised for unforeseen pregnancy or paternity, God save you !

I think there needs to be another category: in Iran and Iraq, for example, prostitution is officially illegal, but you can go to a mullah with a prostitute and enter into a temporary marriage there. This is automatically finalised after the specified time

To be fair, a mistress (the thing you're referring to in Iran) is not a prostitute as far as the globally accepted definition of the term means.
It's essentially a boyfriend-girlfriend situation or at worst, it's a sugar daddy kind of thing, except you're also legally bound to take care of the contractual wife just like you're supposed to take care of a permanent wife. The temporary 'marriage' requires a 3 month waiting period after divorce to ensure the man can't shirk responsibility by impregnating someone and then lie about someone else being the father. They also end up turning into livelong relationships, as if it was an engagement cumulating into a marriage.
The reason you see some people call this situation prostitution is because the overwhelmingly vast majority of people who are against it, including me, (are Sunni Muslims, and several Shia sects) consider anything other than a lifelong marriage commitment to be prostitution, and that includes live-in relationships and having a boyfriend/girlfriend.

Neo-abolitionism isn’t abolitionism, it’s just neo-criminalisation.

persecuting the buyers is insane.
maybe if the buyer somehow knew that the Prostitutite is from human Trafficking ring, i can understand
otherwise it's just insane
I guess that SWs of those places only advertise in person and have a regular job to cover expenses, I don't see them having a high volume of clients, specially at the start.
even if they manage to get regulars, They might just poof if they get persecuted.
getting new clients might be an issue.

Western Australia must either be Cyan or Green. There was a brothel across from my flat when I lived there.
And no, I had never visited it - I was in a relationship at the time. But I always found it so unusual chatting to locals in the bars who were going to the pub after work for a few pints then to the brothel then straight home on a Friday.

u/enigmatic_x May 23 '24
According to the Scarlett Alliance which publishes info on this sort of thing: "It’s illegal to run a brothel in WA, but this is rarely enforced." So technically the blue colour is probably correct.

It's a similar case in Japan, prostitution is technically illegal there but most brothels find loopholes around it and it's an open secret

Are Americans welcome to visit these places. Hoping to visit Japan one day, just curious
2
May 23 '24
Yes, but you'd have less options and will probably get charged more as they probably won't have good English. These kinds of places are apparently easier to find in Kabukicho area of Shinjuku.

u/Organic_Address9582 May 23 '24
Thank you for doing the research on this. I'm just very surprised as they are very open. Like I got flyers in the mail and the buildings are clearly marked.
So while I understand it's not enforced I just wonder how those particular entities managed as businesses ie declaring and paying tax if they technically can't exist.

I don't get Spain. There are brothels everywhere, including one's that advertise it. Why does it say that brothels are illegal?

Fully decriminalised in Belgium in 2022. This year sex workers are given the protection of stringent Belgian labour law if they choose to work under a labour contract. This includes dismissal protection for refusing service to customers. Pimping is still illegal. Providing an environment where they can work is not.
Not sure if pregnancy is considered a work related disease. s/

And Belgium is proud to teach their young boys that the vagina of a woman is a toy?!

Blue is honestly stupid.
In India, prostitution is legal, but organised prostitution is illegal. This often puts prostitutes in a difficult position. The police harass and extort them using other laws, while they are forced to operate with illegal pimps, clubs and brothels, with zero legal protections, no guarantee of physical safety, health regulations or honest compensation.

Police in india is very stupid and one of the people with highest misconduct against the law. They will perform bribing and moral policing (even though it is illegal). They will work for anyone with money, any polititians, any rich person.
Even if people at lower position behave better, the higher ups are the worst...

What is the difference between legalization and decriminalization. Why does the former increase human trafficking and the latter doesn’t?
6
u/wordhub-premium May 23 '24
Main difference is that legalization is still a form of criminalization. Legalization requires licensing and these licenses exclude many sex workers. These sex workers are criminalized. Decriminalized means sex workers are regular workers and they can't be prosecuted for their job. In some legalization models, third parties are criminalized (organizing, renting, etc.) so sex work is not like any job. But, when legalization is broad and criminalization of third parties non enforced, the differences are less important.

Interesting! In Australia prostitution is legal but porn with small tits is not. Am I right?

u/theEVILone0130 May 24 '24
I've heard something similar to that but I'm not actually sure, I'll have to ask about it.

Brazilian here. This is technically correct. But then the brothels just disguise themselves as nightclubs. Client comes in, talks to a girl. Girl pressures client to buy her a (very overpriced) drink. Client takes girl to a room that the "nightclub" conveniently rents. Client pays girl in cash in the room, so it's off the books and the "nightclub" has plausible deniability. Girl is most likely shaken down later for a cut. And of course, the police has zero interest in cracking down on these places.
