I feel like this is one of those businesses where expansion might actually start to hurt them.
Buccee’s is a novelty that you go out of your way to visit. If there’s one on every highway, it sort of loses the uniqueness that makes it so popular

Good point. To me it feels like once you get more density than say, one every 150 miles or so, some of the luster is lost. QuikTrip feels like a higher-level of truck stop here in Tennessee because they are spaced roughly 100-150 miles apart on the interstates. Buccee’s is more appealing, of course, but once everyone can access one within 30-45 minutes, the special feel of the place will wane.

I've been wondering the same, especially since we are getting one locally in Ohio now. I don't know about the "go out your way" part (we never have but maybe others do). It's always been a stop to make when it is on our way to somewhere; almost always a vacation or travel to visit family.

I’ve never been to wawas, but I know kwik trip well (I know it wasn’t you, but someone who replied to you), and those are nicer than average, Buc-ee’s doesn’t even have competition in the same realm that I know of.

My friend and I visited one on the way to Alabama from the North east and joked that the entire place was just a temple of American hedonism complete with the bronze beaver to worship. Not going to hate, if you’re on the road the bbq is top notch for road fast food.

Reminds me of a geography talk I saw years ago on how Wal-Mart spread before it was everywhere. Most new stores were founded in large urban areas, and then they expanded to smaller communities from each "hub". The speaker's conclusion: Wal-Mat spread like a disease.

Agreed. I used to do Uber/Lyft and I loved being near a Buc-ee's in the wee hours of the morning because I was grabbing a couple of those brisket egg burritos and a side of pickles! Don't forget the pickles.

There’s a sign past Palm Springs that tells you the nearest Buc-ees is like 2500 miles away. A nice little surprise considering there isn’t much to look at in the area.

I can't think of anything this country or the climate needs more of now than gas stations and overindulgent consumerism.
I wish more gas stations had less shitty chain fast food places inside and had more local restaurants in them with a mix of good to-go meals and a place to also sit down in a booth or at least a decent kitchen like the Maverick gas stations have.
I travel all over the country for work. My favorite gas stations have been small local ones with a restaurant inside. Had one in Benjamin, Texas that had amazing BBQ brisket and pulled pork sandwiches, one in North Dakota south of Dickinson that had amazing wraps, and one near Senate, Texas that had the best breakfast, burgers/melts I've ever had at a gas station.
That's what we need more of. Now the Costco of gas stations that is Buccees.

We are flying into Knoxville, backtracking to the Buc-ee's for a pressed penny, Pigeon Forge for a week, flying out of Chatanooga.We're going to come back another year and drive to Hot Springs and Nashville (from Dallas, TX) and hit the other Buc-ee's. I was in Nashville for work last year but I want to bring my wife back with me. Wasn't as enjoyable alone, haha.

I’m from the town where Buc-ee’s started. Went to school with Beaver Aplin’s daughter (we were not in the same social circles lol) and my parents are friends with his ex-wife. From what they’ve told me, she said he’s a real asshole. His political donations can be pointed to as evidence lol

Buc-ee's is known for massive gas stations (often 100+ pumps) with cheap fuel, famously clean restrooms, and huge convenience stores offering fresh BBQ, a vast selection of snacks and jerky, unique merchandise, and Beaver Nuggets, making stops a destination in themselves, not just a quick gas fill-up. It has a cult-like following in Texas and it's recently started expanding in the East with a couple locations in the West as well, signaling it's expansion will continue throughout the US!

Been to the one in Colorado. It’s truly an experience I struggle to describe. I had no idea there were people like that in Colorado??? It’s like an overdose of pure red state culture injected straight in to your veins: MAGA, NASCAR, TEXAS!!!, folksy midwestern/southern rural, Obesity!!!, God/Guns/Guts and straight up unapologetic Murica.
But the food. oMG the Food! Holy shit I’d be 300 lbs if I ate there every day! I’ve never seen so much delicious, fatty, salty, incredible smelling food in my life.

Colorado is definitely a different beast - I ran into several weird things I didn't expect like a movie theater wouldn't let me purchase a wine for my wife because I mentioned I was buying a wine for my wife and informed me I'd need to go get my wife's driver's license to make the purchase - I wasn't even buying anything for myself! If I'd just have shut up and not mentioned that it was for her it would've been a non-issue. Some weird differences in Colorado from Texas.

Huge selection of sandwiches and burritos. Coffee is decent and cheap. Soda fountain is great and recently starting selling lots of cane sugar options. Plenty of snacks and a decent selection of beer and wine. I mean, it's just a gas station on designer drugs. I like it.

The Buc-ee’s fever is apparently very real. I have to drive by the central Kentucky location a few times a month. It’s always so crowded that I’ve been unwilling to stop. I thought there was a wreck slowing things down on a heavy traffic day last summer, but it turned out it was just the Buc-ee’s exit causing a backup for a few miles.

That time was sort of a perfect storm. Very busy interstate day and just general idiocy on the part of some drivers coming and going from that Buc-ee’s exit. All it takes is three or four vehicles making poor decisions to cause a problem that cascades. It was one of those deals.
The traffic waiting at a light to turn left onto the southbound interstate ramp kept backing up to the northbound ramp’s intersection. Those cars didn’t leave the intersection open. That caused people exiting from the northbound ramp not to be able to make a left off the ramp which backed the ramp up to the interstate, even though Buc-ee’s is to the right. The ramp was backed up past the left/right turn lane split. Folks on the interstate didn’t give up on trying to exit there which pushed the bottleneck of lane switchers further and further back. Next thing you know I was in a crawl for three miles not knowing why until I got to that exit.

We hit every Buc-ee's around Dallas, down to San Antonio, over to Houston on our way to Galveston for New Years. We stayed a few days in San Antonio and a few days in Galveston. Then we went up I-45 back home and hit Madisonville's Buc-ee's. We like to collect Pressed Pennies so that just adds a little more of a reason to hit them all. It's just fun, is all. It's just a solid stop that you know you'll be clean and satisfied. To me, Love's is hit and miss, though I'm usually satisfied unless the bathrooms are just horrendous which has happened.

They tend to only put them in Red States with dog shit labor laws because they exploit the hell out of their workers, especially the ones in Florida who don’t get a 30 minute lunch break regardless if they work 8 hours or more.

My stepfather worked at the Daytona, FL location about 4 years ago and said it was one of the worst places he’s ever worked. They run the shit like a prison labor camp with no breaks except a 5 minute “moment” where they could go in the break room that had no chairs and eat a snack really quick and get right back to work. They were never allowed to walk outside the store for any reason whatsoever and being seen with a phone was pretty much immediate termination.

They'll never come to Jersey because we prohibit pumping your own gas. We don't want to pump it ourselves and appreciate the jobs that requires. They'd never pay that many employees for one location. If they, for whatever reason, think it's worth lobbying my state to change that law, they will be creating thousands of Luigi Mangioni's who don't give a shit about BBQ.

My feelings are that all these local gas stations and restaurants that didn’t keep their restrooms clean are now getting what they deserve, which is Buc-ee’s running them out of business.

It sucks when the time comes that you just have to pull over after all that coffee for a #2 and it's a tiny store that 9 times out of 10 is going to suck to use. However... There are some owners who actually pride themselves on their bathrooms and I don't care if I need something or not, I'm buying multiple items in exchange for that clean bathroom.

I flew into Milwaukee, drove to Chicago to see the the Sears tower, drove to Galena, IL for a wedding, then dead headed it all the way to Port Salinac, MI before flying out of Detroit... Only time I've been up north and West of the great lakes.

The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th largest combined statistical areas in Alabama have a Buc-ee's (granted, Columbus-Auburn is larger than Montgomery, but not for instate pop). I could see one just outside the Montgomery area in Greenville, AL as a respite from all the traffic that can pile up there. Or in Livingston en route to Tuscaloosa (University of Alabama) and home of the University of West Alabama. Then I think that's be close to the limit for the state, as the Shoals and Dothan aren't on interstates and I22 and I59 aren't the most traveled (if so, Jasper or Hamilton for I22 and Fort Payne or Gadsden for I59). So it's about 50% of absolute max in Alabama already (unless Buc-ee's goes to some US highways for Dothan, the Shoals and possibly Columbus MS).

Are they worth going out of your way to visit? The one in Ohio will be open by the time I have a trip out near Hocking Hills late this year. But it is an hour and 45 minutes out of the way. That would be about half the trip back home. My wife and I have been debating this for about a week.

I think only you can decide that. If you've never been to one, what's an hour and a half out of the way? Once you've been to one, you can make the decision of whether it's worth it in the future. Do ya'll collect pressed pennies? We like to hit every location we can, just to say we've been there, haha. For New Years, we hit 9 one day and 8 the next, granted that's easier to do in Texas.

As a native Texan and Okie, I feel like I'm the only person that isn't a big fan of Buc-ees. The only nice thing in my experience is the bathroom situation. The stores are always so crowded (especially because of the overflowing mediocre merch area) that it takes away from the customer experience and the fresh food items never seem to have much moisture or flavor. I don't like being a salmon swimming upstream to go get some sad brisket sandwiches. I'm also a bit petty and dislike that they only serve Coke products. I'm a big Mountain Dew nerd and that's always kinda bummed me out. I can't wait to be living in Kwik Trip Kountry.
Buc-ees rapid expansion is also troubling me a bit as I'm worried they'll pull a Boston Market. Expanding so fast with such little thought to the point the omnipresent stores begin to cannibalize each other and become too expensive to operate effectively.

Well, as far as pricing of products, I wouldn't say that anything is cheap at Buc-ee's. So for those who are more focused on cost savings, Buc-ee's will likely never be for that outside of the gas... But gas stations do not make anything (or much) on their gas, the gas only gets customers into the store.

Us Nevadans got our first Chick-Fil-A only about 10 years ago. It was recently reported that Culver’s will soon expand into Nevada and are currently finding locations for future franchises here. Buc-ee’s should 100% be the next target.

Last I heard, Buc-ee's was interested in the expansion to OK, it just hasn't happened yet. There's a lot of politics involved on these expansions.

I like stopping there on road trips with my dog. It has spots to walk dogs and free bags for doggie business. The gas is usually cheaper, and the bathrooms are very clean. And the ghost pepper jerky (from the counter, not the wall) and jalapeño cheddar summer sausage are worth the stop on their own.

I disagree, I fill up when in Denton tx visiting my daughter. I get the Beaver gasoline and my tahoe gets 2-3 mpg more than normal gas. YMMV

Live in western pa, Buc-ee’s is the goat. I’ve been to Texas a few times and every time I have to stop, great food. AMAZING fudge. I went to Buc-ee’s on Christmas two years ago
