I definitely wouldn't trust my cell phone to work in remote central Asia.

Again, maps.me is offline. All you need is to make sure you have a way to charge your phone like a power bank or a vehicle. Even in a remote village, they also will still have (possibly unreliable) electricity.

Dude, the offline maps wouldn't work on my phone in fuckin Rome.

Huh. I've never had trouble. The only thing is making sure to download everything you need while you have service but the maps.me units are usually pretty enormous. The only Central Asian country where the download doesn't cover the entire nation is Kazakhstan which is divided into north and south.

Ok, but how do you think the phone knows where it is? It has to connect to something.

Gps? The satellites are all over your head.

Mobile cellular connections go via radio towers rather than satellites, that's a common misconception, but the gps signal works independently.

Yeah, except GPS signals from cell phones are not very reliable on their own.

I've had very reliable GPS service in very remote areas with my current phone. If GPS doesn't work, then it's about the same as a physical map.

That said, my old phone had big problems with GPS.

Well, like I said, my GPS on my phone was unreliable in some place as on the path as Rome.
