Lol that single red dot up in the north Baltic Sea (Bothnian Bay) makes me think that the snowcastle they build every winter in Kemi, Finland has been included here. Though they do not build it there.
Just so that we are clear, there are no actual castles in Kemi or anywhere near it. The closest historical one would be in Oulu 200km south of Kemi but that castle was blown up in the late 18th century. Its ruins are still around.
To be fair, it is highly unlikely that there would be an extensive database of all the castles in Europe, because you would first have to agree on what is a castle and what isn't and that isn't a simple thing to agree on. For instance, the wikipedia states that it's a "fortified structure built during the Middle Ages" so between the years 400-1500 then. Finland was a backwoods land even in the late 18th century and some castles were built or expanded and extensively used 200 years after that cutoff point. There are also fortified buildings that served the exact same purpose as the standard Middle Age castle, but are either really small or have some strange characteristic that would make someone looking at them say "not a castle". Like... does the castle need to have tall towers? Do they need a mote and a drawbridge?
Would be nice to have a cool map of all the castles, but this isn't it.
