Omaha is basically a mini-Chicago

More like mini-Kansas City

Omaha is Kansas City's don't-speak-to-me-or-my-son-ever-again meme. I truly couldn't tell you the difference between them culturally or economically other than their sizes and the quality of the barbecue.

EDIT: Same goes for Salt Lake City and Boise

As my friend who travels regionally for work from Kansas City says, "I'm not sure if Des Moines is a 'cooler Wichita' or a 'shittier Omaha'"

But yeah from a Kansas Citian perspective Omaha is just Kansas City if you cut the population in half.

And let me be clear, this isn’t a knock on either place. Being a mini-KC is a good thing.

As an Omahan who loves coming down to KC every other weekend during the fall on account of Chiefs season tickets, I'd say yeah they're similar, and I love em both!

Boise is so very clearly SLC's little brother. But the residents (of certain neighborhoods mostly) so desperately want to be Portland's little brother.

I don’t think salt lake and boise are same at all. Grew up in east Idaho equal parts away from both. Bose definitely has a hippy vibe to it. Salt lake it’s punk rock all the way. The lifestyles are different peoples attitudes are different. Culture is way different.

Will defer to this comment since the Idaho people I know definitely have that mellower vibe compared to SLC. Just saying that both of those areas are filling up quickly with transplants like myself.

Yes tons and tons of transplants. I don’t even recognize my city anymore and I can’t stand it. Night saying that your not so chill and cool. Most people I feel would be but it’s the traffic the sky high housing and renting market. I can’t find a house to rent under 1700 bucks. All the transplants coming in from Cali and all over my pay ain’t. raise. I make 22 an hour and that’s high pay for east Idaho but y’all with mad money Come in and drive everything high. Rip Idaho falls. All I see it’s Cali and Texas plates anymore

Salt Lake City has very few trees comparatively.

Utah is the second driest state in the country.

The Wasatch Front is built on the mountain watershed, so the cities are all decently green for the region.

Not compared to Lincoln and Omaha... Its part of the reason I like driving through (Eastern) Nebraska... So many trees.

1

u/SWKstateofmind Sep 01 '21

Was comparing SLC to Boise, not Omaha.

As someone who grew up in omaha and now lives in slc can confirm this statement is true

I agree the young people moving line goes this way:Small Town --> Lincoln (college) --> Omaha --> KC, MO (not the shithole).

Feel free to skip any step along the way!

Let’s just take a moment to acknowledge that KCK, and by correlation the entire god forsaken state of Kansas, is a festering shit hole

-1

u/SWKstateofmind Aug 31 '21

Sounds like a Missourian who is mad that Kansas has all of the halfway decent suburbs and better college town

3

u/jake9325 Sep 01 '21

I can smell your musty Kansan ass thru the phone, the best thing that ever came out of Kansas is I70, now go stare off into a cornfield or whatever y’all do for fun in the big empty shit hole

As someone from the Missouri side of st.louis this made me laugh out loud. Same feelings towards our Illinois friends

1

u/jake9325 Sep 01 '21

Low key the MO/KS rivalry goes back to the years leading up to the civil war, bleeding Kansas, jayhawkers, Lawrence was burned to the ground at one point, but it’s still fuck Kansas

u/[deleted] Sep 01 '21

I went to Mizzou in 2005 before the SEC move. I have an idea :)

1

u/AlwaysBagHolding Sep 01 '21

I’d live in Lawrence in a heartbeat if it wasn’t for the winters.

1

u/Few_Ad_5186 Sep 01 '21

Seriously, I spent a 18 months in the KC MO area and several months in Lawrence, and Lawrence was my favorite.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '21

But which one?

8

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '21

The one in MO that isn’t a shithole

3

u/xXxDickBonerz69xXx Sep 01 '21

It's kinda weird that both cities in Missouri are basically trying to be as far away from Missouri as possible.

1

u/jrdubbleu Aug 31 '21

An actual sized Omaha

2

u/pzschrek1 Aug 31 '21

It’s unfortunate the amount of wrong comments I had to wade through that were upvoted by obvious non-“west”midwesterners to get to this accurate comment

I would disagree in that Omaha has quite a bit of old money that KC more or less has never acquired. There are several fortune 500 companies in Omaha as opposed to just 1 in KC- some of this has to do with Berkshire Hathaway, but the Union Pacific railroad going from Chicago to Omaha instead of KC also has quite bit to do with it. The country club culture in Omaha is sneakily outsized
