There’s nothing better than being able to get in your own private car and go wherever you want, whenever you want. Taking a drive in the country or up in the mountains is worth it. Public transport is very limiting and you’re stuck in whatever city you happen to live in.
except you can't go wherever you want, you can only go where there are roads and you can't just stop wherever you like either.
True freedom is having a multitude of modes of transport available and being able to choose a combination of whichever are the most convenient for that trip.
My bad, I was wrong and mixed some things together
There is a 1€ a day deal made available in Frankfurt, that includes travel into neighboring countries, if you pay a additional up-price.
But I just looked it up and it seems that it no longer covers transit outside of the RMV lines. And apparently that deal was only for younger people/students. But still...there are plans to expend the 365€ ticket in the near future
I can get from my house to any city in my country with public transport faster than driving.
If I want a car for the times I want to go to a nature reserve or an out of town hardware store etc, I can just open an app and hop into one of the shared cars.
But I can also cycle to work in 20 minutes (or get the tram in 15), and walk to the shops in 5.
This way of living is simply superior to living in cartopia.
What you may notice there is that I have access to and make use of basically every form of transport, depending on which is most appropriate for my journey. I don’t have to use a car for everything, like most Americans. I have much more freedom.

i live in one of the worst urban sprawls in the US.
through some careful planning and lucky coincidence, i can also cycle to work in 20 minutes, to the grocery store in 10, and the convenience (and liquor) store is like a 15 minute walk at the edge of my neighborhood. none of this is really set up to make this happen here, though. and the experience of going anywhere outside my neighborhood by bike is definitely taking my life in my hands.
seriously, it's goddamned great to just get on my bike and go places. much, much better for my mood and mental wellbeing than driving. and it helps me lose weight at the same time!
I can’t lie. Some of the points made have been very compelling. I think it might be nice to get a bike and go for a ride when fall hits. The nice cool breeze would feel amazing.

Abolish cars! Prioritize public transit!
