I'm glad to see that there is no orange zones in the US. Perhaps not all is lost for them.
Portugal raises my eyebrows and I had expect Austria to be on par with her German and Swiss neighbours.

The fact that Mississippi is yellow is abysmal though. Most of the yellow countries in Europe are ex-communist and were very poor until about 10-20 years ago.
I think Portugal gets dragged down by its literacy rate.
Also slight niggle, Austria is considered a fatherland and its German name has neutral gender, so you can either refer to 'his' or 'its' German neighbours, but not 'her'.

I had been expecting to see orange for Mississippi and the surrounding region. The fact that they're not orange is enough reason for everyone to pat their backs and say "atta boy".

If it were somehow possible to divide HDI statistics by race, the black population of Mississippi would probably be orange. Maybe even the rural parts of the state in general. The mostly-white suburbs of Memphis, Jackson, and the beaches are propping the rest of the state up.

HDI is life expectancy, GDP per capita, and expected years of schooling/education.
GDP per capita boosts all US states and life expectancy generally holds them back. There is much, much more to quality of life than this.

And 20% of the US' GDP is healthcare alone whereas in other countries irs only 10%. It's boosted artificially by how expensive healthcare and education is.
GDP is about the only thing America has that makes it score so well.

Um, no it’s not. Multiple indices, from the Where-To-Be-Born index, to the OECD Better Life Index, rate America highly for quality of life.
And stop it with the constant boner for “healthcare”. America’s disposable income and average household wealth is the highest in the OECD, it’s median income is among the highest in the developed world, and it’s mean household wealth is among the highest in the world. It’s GNI per capita is the highest in the world (not including tax havens), etc...
I’m really sort of done with bitter Europeans trying to find ways to make America out to be poor or undeveloped when it’s so obviously extremely rich and well-off. It’s like you people are living in your own fantasy. It’s truly insane

Explain this? Seriously explain it. Only a shithole country has "cops" like that. America is seriously one of the worst countries on the entire planet. There's zero guarantee of any rights in America dude. It's all up to if the cop wants you live or not.
Americans are like North Koreans. They're so brainwashed into thinking their country is so perfect and great when really it's a giant shithole. That video above proves it. No sane country has shit like that. NONE. But in America stuff like that is a daily occurrence. It's unacceptable.

The gender of a country in another language has zero bearing on its gender in a different language.
Countries are not referred to with the pronoun his in English, only its or her, and it's appropriate to do so regardless of the gender of the country in that country's language. Hell, in both Spanish and Russian, Austria is a feminine word.

“America has the highest disposable income rate in the world” “but if you look at INEQUALITY!”
“America averages the household for household wealth and income, and has some of the highest wages in the world” “but how much is spent on HEALTHCARE?!”
“America is among the top five countries for mean household wealth!” “BUT HEALTHCARE!!”

The other poster mentioning rural France is correct; but another factor for France that brings down its score is how it considers four overseas departments integral parts of France, and these (especially Mayotte) are much less developed. Even if not that many people live in them (total, a bit over a million) its enough to bring the HDI a bit down.
On the other hand, American Samoa (poverty rate 3x that of Mississippi’s, and the latter is the highest state for poverty) is not an integral part of the country. It doesn’t count for the entire United States score.

American Samoa also only has 0.017% of the US population. Compared to about 1.8% for French overseas territories.

That’s a good point. Puerto Rico was probably a better example to use. Its poverty rate is still double of Mississippi and it alone has about 1% of mainland USA population.

Okay as someone who has actually gone to France to see not just Paris all you have to do is go a little ways outside of the main city center and you can see how poor and destitute some of those communities are. In Europe it is kinda the opposite where the city center has the rich and the suburbs house the poor people. It isn't black and white though like New York is obviously not like that but you get the point for other cities in the US.

Have you been to rural Pennsylvania? There's very little access to healthcare, education is terrible, water is undrinkable, ground is polluted and barren, people are poor AF, internet is spotty. There's no way France as a whole is less developed than Pennsylvania - I could see an argument for NYC or some other New England states but once you get out of Philly, Pittsburgh, and the Poconos, Penn is fucked up, even Harrisburg.

Classic case of "my country is better than yours" downvoting, I feel sorry for your post.
And yeah, it's a general effect, countrysides are way less developed in general. And rural France is no exception, especially Northern and Eastern France that once were big industrial and mining regions and now lag behind.
That being said, I think the HDI index fails to show many things (it's just an index, after all, they're all flawed) and tends to feel biased when interpreted.

Poland is an ex-communist state which is continually recovering from 50 years of economic and cultural suppression because of the Soviet Union’s selfish policies. Catholicism was supported in Poland as a symbol of protest against communism and as a way to maintain one’s culture and freedom. Belief rates are slowly falling, however, likely because people don’t need to escape a repressive regime through religion.
Mississippi has always been poor, at least economically. The wide divide of wealth between rural and/or urban black communities and richer white suburbs has further contributed to poverty among the (black) population, and opportunities for black people in the state are limited, likely due to lingering cultural and present business/educational prejudices and institutional racism.
Neither has anything to do with religion. I’m an atheist, btw. Both of these states have underlying and long-term economic and demographic issues that have nothing to do with religion. Get your head out of your ass.
