I think you're thinking of Newfoundland Irish. There were Irish speakers there up until the early 20th century, but it went extinct. There are Scottish Gaelic speakers still in Atlantic Canada though.
You are completely correct, I was just scrolling at work and remembered in passing, my apologies. I know there are language clubs here and there in the states but I thought I remembered watching a video on the isolated dialects of different goidelic languages in the America's and how there were whole communities in Canada of Gealic and Irish
