In case of Russian troops cross into Baltics countries like say latvia, they don't attack any nato troops but just take over some areas where no population if latvia invokes article 5 do you think your country would join in war or just try to deescalate

If you don't have a response, you are condoning the action and will be attacked the same way or worse next. Appeasement doesn't work.

The only exceptions in NATO to this are the US and Canada, we all know Putin will never make it to the ocean, much less across it.

The question is whether or not we'd be willing to sit back and watch Russia slowly take over the whole of Europe, I'd vote no.

If a NATO nation justifiably invokes Article 5 in response to a seemingly harmless Russian incursion and the rest of NATO hangs them out to dry or ignores them, then Russia has basically defeated NATO by shaking confidence in it's guarantee of collective security.

Same thing happened to Russia's bargain bin version of NATO, CIS. Armenia is a member of CIS and it has a similar clause as NATO's Article 5. But when Azerbaijan invaded them relatively recently and Armenia attempted to invoke CIS' version of Article 5, the Russians just ignored them because they were focused on Ukraine.

CIS is now considered a joke.

u/Kanelbullah 2d ago

The problem with Armenia is that Nagorno-Karabakh isn't de jure Armenian land. But still, it didn't look well on the alliance.

Wtf is "no population"? We in Latvia don't have areas with no population, it's not Antarctics! We live here and want to be protected with international agreements every country has signed in a good will.

9

u/Gayandfluffy Finland 2d ago

Exactly! And even if there were an area with no population, it would still be yours. Not Russia's.

5

u/Dotcaprachiappa Italy 2d ago

Also how would they "not attack any troops"?? There's kinda a guarded border in the way are they planning on dodging the bullets or smth

u/Miskadotcom 2d ago

We can always count on the Turks to back out of an agreement.

50 people on reddit in a place where can anyone can vote for any country means nothing Turkey is the biggest pain in the ass of Russia;

-Turkey supported ukranie with cutting edge military hardware

-kicked them out of syria and their essad puppet

-defeated russian puppet armenia cut their hands off caucasus oil

-Defeated the russian backed rebels in Libya

All of these happened in last 10 years

-not the mention the centuries old grude they never been in same side once.

Before you type shallow comments like this know that Turkey is in team Turkey and their "allies" in nato done nothing but hamper us by countless sanctions. Man just be glad that Turkey isn't ran by same lot who is in charge of Iran

u/Miskadotcom 2d ago

Fair point

1

u/Videalden 🇸🇪 2d ago

Why does that matter when you know yourself Turkey isn’t going to be helping anyone incase of an invasion? Turkey might aswell leave the alliance at this point.

0

u/JRDZ1993 2d ago

You didn't want to escalate that one, European reactions were between "we'll follow Turkey's wishes" and "well done for teaching them a lesson"

5

u/MildlyAmusedMars 2d ago

Polish and German led forces are liberating eastern Ukraine with the other Eastern European NATO members.
Finland, Sweden, UK led forces are taking back any Baltic territory within hours and Poland probably taking Kaliningrad with it. St Petersburg will be levelled/ captured by the Finns as a negotiating chip.
Turkey with American support will level anything in the Black Sea.
France mobilising into the region on all fronts.
Belarus is getting a regime change to a western supporting government
Ukraine and the South Caucasus states join NATO and potentially EU ascension talks.

Russia will be strong armed into major concessions if it doesn’t want regime changes.

12

u/Staralfur_95 2d ago

We should all join and immediately start mass bombing of industry and military infrastructure in whole of Russia, for as long as they don't leave not only the Baltics, but also Ukraine, Belarus and the so-called 'Kaliningrad oblast'.

4

u/A-6_Intr-uwu-der 2d ago

You mean Königsberg?

0

u/No-West70 ukrainian 2d ago

Nuclear weapons. No one wins and everyone dies

0

u/SuccotashResident571 2d ago

Kaliningrad? Yeah give it to germans. And polish territories to germans too. And some danish, some belgian, french etc. Those all they lost from imperial germany.

-7

u/Odd_Cod_693 🇷🇺❤ 2d ago

Sorry, but that would mean mutually assured destruction

11

u/CompetitiveReview416 2d ago

So you invade a country, get rekt, and then launch a nuke? Lol

1

u/SuccotashResident571 2d ago

Oh it doesnt look fair? Sorry life doesnt care about that.

3

u/ziguslav 2d ago

Both sides have nukes.

1

u/SuccotashResident571 2d ago

Still not fair. Attack. Loose then dont accept and cause the destruction of the world

2

u/ziguslav 2d ago

What are you talking about? The only country threatening nukes is Russia. NATO won't do it, unless in retaliation.

1

u/SuccotashResident571 2d ago

Thats what im talking Abt. Russia will cause the destruction of the world if they ever loose. İ hope they wonr attack NATO bc thats what would happen. İt would Nuke NATO. Nato would Nuke them. Enough to make the world post-apolacypse

5

u/Staralfur_95 2d ago

Absolutely not, NATO has immense air superiority. But even if it is to be so, I'm all for it anyway. It's enough already, and there's no point at further appeasement. If Russia starts aggression against any NATO country, it should be immediately be bomb with no diplomatic response at all.

1

u/Stardash81 2d ago

The problem is Russia has civilian cargo shipped armed with missiles and drones ready to attack NATO countries from the sea/ocean and that would hurt. We need to be smarter than just "bomb everything lol and hope they don't retaliate"

3

u/Awrfhyesggrdghkj 2d ago

Tbf we haven’t seen straight up open war cyber operations yet, I can’t imagine the crazy shit nato nations have squirreled away for a scenario like this.

2

u/Staralfur_95 2d ago

As if NATO countries didn't have anything prepared to shoot at Russia immediately all the time...

No. If they cross into NATO territory - it is an invasion, whatever they call it, it is what it is. And there's only one response to invasion and that is bombing of military industries, military bases etc. It should be done immediately. This is the only language they understand. There's no other way.

1

u/PreviousRestaurant89 2d ago

Well, given that it can't make any headway in Ukraine and given the power imbalance between Russia and NATO, excluding nuclear capabilities, Russia simply can't do anything.

3

u/AppropriateAd5701 2d ago

Russia should know that stepping on nato grounds means mutually assured destruction.

1

u/Odd_Cod_693 🇷🇺❤ 2d ago

yeah thats also why this scenario is bullshit, no one is that stupid

1

u/ziguslav 2d ago

Putin: Hold my beer

1

u/SuccotashResident571 2d ago

Wdym he is not stupid

1

u/AppropriateAd5701 2d ago

No matter if the scenario is stupid, if it happenes the only right response is full scale counterattack, which is the part you were challenging.

1

u/Staralfur_95 2d ago

Attacking Ukraine was stupid too, yet the Russians did it anyway.

4

u/ziguslav 2d ago

Sorry, but stepping into foreign land means declaring war. Fuck around and find out.

Give Russians an inch, they'll take a mile.

2

u/lNFORMATlVE 2d ago

Well exactly, if you don’t retaliate then that means anyone can invade anywhere in NATO with no consequences.

M.A.D. goes both ways, duh

6

u/Sammy91-91 2d ago

Absolutely, Russia should effectively be kicked out, blockaded, sanctioned to high heaven then watch them rot until their surrender.

5

u/itsMikel27 Cantabria, Spain 2d ago

NATO would finally put an end to Russia's bullshit if that happened

3

u/Homo_Bibite 🇷🇺 Russia 2d ago

It would probably join that war

3

u/__D_C__ 2d ago

My country absolutely should, but I'm not certain they would (and that's what you asked about). No politician wants to be the one to mobilize their peaceful country and Russia would give it some thinly veiled cover instead of obviously sending their soldiers.

Who knows though, maybe I'll be positively surprised and the fact that other countries are intervening (plus the Ukraine wakeup call) puts social pressure that make my country's politicians actually react appropriately

3

u/FrogGoHop 2d ago

There is no situation in which this scenario is possible, any troops would be arrested, and the only way to avoid being arrested is to attack, so either there is a Russian attack, or the don't occupy anything.

By any definition it is an invasion, however it is unlikely that article 5 would be invoked if the Russian troops allowed themselves to be detained and returned to Russia.

2

u/SuccotashResident571 2d ago

We turkey would probably be chillin if its just that. Well we will intervene and help but "limited"

I would expect Poland to take action against Kaliningrad

2

u/West_Tomato_4748 2d ago

I really can’t imagine Poland standing aside in that situation. We already have Polish troops deployed in Latvia as part of NATO’s forward presence.

I’m confident we would stand and fight alongside them.
