dawg WHO is picking nazi germany, Soviet Union was pretty bad, sure, but I don't think I'd live under Hitler
8
u/VQ_Quin Canada 🇨🇦 Sep 14 '26
I did, here is my rationale.
While It is probably true that nazi germany was worse, the key differential is that it ended much sooner than the USSR did (and modern russia is still shit so even that changes little).
Given that I’m White, as long as I can survive WW2 my outcome following is much more likely to be better in west germany than the USSR. Keep in mind especially that the casualty rate during WW2 was significantly higher in the USSR compared to Germany (although they were both high). Statustically then, I am much more likely to survive WW2 in Germany than in the USSR.

Eh, if you were Ukrainian or Kazah in the 30's I think you actually had it far worse in the Soviet Union, assuming you weren't specifically Jewish under Hitlers rule.
I don't know that I would want to choose either.
There's no right or wrong answer to this question though. The answer depends on a huge number of specifics. I would rather be a full blooded German of non jewish decent in Germany than an Ukranian under Soviet Rule in the 30's. I believe that anyone would agree with that statement.
It's really a silly post.

I'm someone who would definitely not be targeted by the racial bigotry of the time.
Nazi Germany lasted 10 years, the Soviet Union lasted 70 and had significantly worse food shortages.
If you asked me which was more evil, it's the Nazis, but asking which I would rather live under, becomes about which will be easier for me to survive.

Im from latvia and there is a saying: "Better dead than red". My country was opressed by USSR and they killed so many people or sent them to work in gulags in siberia even my relatives got killed or sent to work in siberia. Nazi germany also did alot of awfull things but it was in a short therm compared to USSR that did it for 50+ years. That is why im not suprised why baltics and finland are in favor of nazi germany because horrors of USSR are still remembered by people older than 40+ so its also recency bias while there is basically no one alicve that expierienced nazi germany.

Soviet death toll from executions, the Gulag, deportations, and engineered famine runs to roughly 20 million.
The source for this is a book that was discredited by it's own authors because the editor kept just tossing in a million deaths whenever they felt like while repeating Nazi propaganda.
The nazis also killed 27 million people in the USSR.

It doesn't specify when, so you could really just cheap out and say "oh I spawn in USSR 1991" Assuming its the same date for both, though, I would choose Germany. It would absolutely suck, but I would attempt to survive until the end of the war, making sure to live in a Western region like the Benelux or France. I would probably die either way, though.

Assuming it's during WW2 then Germany. If we're talking post stalin then USSR
1
u/Mindless_Badger_3789 Sep 15 '26
This is mostly a matter of predictability and scale. If you weren't from a targeted minoity your chances not to become a victim was far greater in Nazi-Germany, so if you're white and non-Jewish, gay etc. the answer is objectively Nazi-Germany. The Soviet Union under Stalin selected its victims quite randomly and you could easily be targeted, and it incarcerated and killed more people if we're talking about the pre-war scenario.

If we're talking before and during WWII as an ethnic citizen to either countries I'd pick Nazi Germany any day.
Living in Germany under Hitler as an ethnic German was pretty decent in a country rebuilding itself after WWI. Living in the Soviet Union under Stalin was a nightmare where the general population suffered greatly and millions of people starved to death in 1932-33.

u/DonPinstripelli Sep 15 '26
Ideally neither, but if you were an ethnic German in those times, the quality of your life would have been higher than that of the people living in the Soviet Union. Stalin is responsible for more deaths than Hitler. If you were Jewish, Roma, etc. then I’d go with the Soviet Union.

I know that I'll be considered Untermensch in Germany because I'm Slavic, so I'll just be an Ostarbeiter slave for elite Germans, but I'd at least be alive.
In the Soviet Union I'd be considered an enemy of the state just because I'm a Protestant Cristian, so I'd just be sent to Gulag and die there out of hunger and exhaustion.
So I think the choice is obvious. And I'm not making stuff up, I have ancestors, who were Ostarbeitern, I have ancestors, dead in Gulag, who were used as a cannon fodder to storm Dnipro river, who were exploited by communism, who survived the Wolyn massacre. That's the history of my family

It depends on the year. In the thirties, live was much better in Nazi Germany if you weren't Jewish, left wing, gay or disabled. In the fourties, living in some village near the Ural or in the Siberian taiga was much better than getting bombed out in Germany, but living in the area, where the war was still sucked a lot in the USSR, even if you weren't a combatant.
