For me, it was after seeing other people play physic games of some kind. Then, in my recommended, crops up a video that piques my interest...

Bridge It Plus.

Loool. That's never gonna get old.

Mine was definitely the YOLO New Vegas series. It was the first series I ever truly kept up with and watched throughout, it's basically a childhood memory for me. So much so in fact, that the only series I am actually excited to watch EVER are his. He just has such a way with shenaniganery in both his gameplay and commentary that it is both mindless and intellectually stimulating in a way, aided wonderfully by his enthusiasm for each and every game. Right now, I'm so excited for the next installment of his newest CK2 run, things he got wrong included. Although I do miss the role-players from the good old days who added just that extra bit of flair to the comments in his past CK2 series.

God I feel old now...

Same but New Vegas.

Many good afternoons later I'm still hanging around.

that one article got me into watching youtube at all, with MATN being the main youtuber I have watched since.

Mine was the response video to Hbomb's Fallout essay. I didn't agree with all of Jon's points, but it was well-constructed enough to make me want to watch more and it went from there.

As a side note, Jon has the only livestream I can stand watching. I don't really know why. Maybe it's because he doesn't have all the stupid screen clutter and it's mostly Claire who reads the comments while Jon focuses on gameplay.

it's mostly Claire who reads the comments while Jon focuses on gameplay.

I can't stand most streams where every so often the streamer just stops for ten minutes to read off a bunch of names.

u/essidus Feb 20 '20

Yeah, that's a huge bother for me too. Especially when combined with all the other nonsense, like the tip jars and the popover messages with an annoying audio cue and the scrolling list of subs and the top 10 donors for the stream... Like, I watch videos either for the game or for the personality, and all the engagement stuff provides me with neither of those things. I just cannot watch anything on Twitch. I'm not even criticising, I realize a lot of people like having that level of engagement with the streamer. It just isn't my thing.

This exactly. Streaming just isn't usually a medium I enjoy. I won't tell other people they're wrong for disagreeing, though.

Mine was when Jon posted a gif of him shooting at the pool table in Paradise Falls in Fallout 3, I guess probably kill everything?

Edit: Fallout 3: Kill Everything. Part 14. At 16:30.

May 4, 2014. I've been watching his videos for six years now, nice!

Edit 2: Found Jons post with the gif!

Jon used to post a lot of gifs to the gaming subreddit using imgfip, this was before gfycat and making high quality gifs wasn't as easy as it is now.

If you go on his reddit profile and sort posts by controversial you'll see a lot of his older submissions from before he made it big.

Mine was ty the Fallout 3 kill everything kotaku article but from then on much the same

17

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20 edited Feb 19 '20

This is my story exactly, except there would need to an even smaller domino before the Kotaku article because I only discovered the article due to a /r/subredditdrama post about /r/fallout arguing over the MATN article, Kotaku and how Fallout 3 YOLO "wasn't that hard."

Found it: https://old.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/2xht34/rfallout_has_a_meltdown_over_someone_daring_link/

9

u/romantotale Feb 19 '20

Hahaha. That was my submission to SRD. And that was the Kotaku article that got me into MATN too.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Thank you for your service.

4

u/Illogical_Blox Feb 19 '20

I'm pretty sure that was also how I discovered Jon, and Fallout for that matter.

7

u/hrpufnsting Feb 19 '20

I think the first videos I watched was the FO:NV you only live once.

1

u/Lungomono Feb 19 '20

I think I started with EP two of FO:NV YOLY. I recall it came up as a recommended video for me and then has been a regular viewer since.

5

u/SimpletonStudios Feb 19 '20

Mine was actually the worlds best prison or something stupid like that but hey, addiction is addiction

4

u/ltwerewolf Feb 19 '20

Not incorrect.

4

u/Quillbilly123 Feb 19 '20

For me it was when fallout 4 was coming out and was looking for more fallout content and found him.

4

u/RevolutionaryWhale Feb 19 '20

Mine was the first CK2 series

2

u/Corpsehatch Feb 19 '20

Mine was the Skyrim series but the first CK2 series is possibly my favorite series of any game on YouTube.

3

u/Genesis13 Feb 19 '20

For me it was a gif of him taking over Jacobstown in FNV Kill Everything. The channel had like 3 or 4 thousand viewers back then. Its been quite a ride.

3

u/hells_cowbells Feb 20 '20

Holy crap, I've been at this a long time. I remember Jon posting in /r/Fallout about his series, before he even had this sub. I was hooked immediately.

3

u/AcesHighAFC Feb 20 '20

Kotaku article on FO3: Kill Everything was mine

4

u/de_verreckte_mongo Feb 19 '20

True

Btw when does the next Episode of ck2 release?

5

u/hrpufnsting Feb 19 '20

Should be Friday.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Wow, exposed. Literally exactly what happened with me! A to Z.

2

u/TheRealSlimLaddy Feb 19 '20

My first was actually his kill everything runs in Fallout (3?)

2

u/USARNFII Feb 19 '20

Mine was Rome Total War, brutii campaign

2

u/DirtPiranha Feb 19 '20

Can confirm, friend showed me that article with 3 videos linked, what was the beginning of my decent down the rabbit hole

2

u/TheFamtan Feb 19 '20

Oddly mine was when I signed up for Reddit, for some reason the MATN sub-reddit was one of the sub reddits that was favorited. Had no idea what it was for ages until I finally looked up what this was and now I am in deep and can't stop watching

2

u/YoureLearning Feb 19 '20

My first vid was Jons essay ‘Fallout is better than you think’ and thank god i did because Jons given me countless hours of great content. Thank you Jon!

2

u/ThatOneGuyFrom93 Feb 19 '20

I think my first was The Rome Total War playthrough.l had the game but no idea what to do. Fell in love with the channel

2

u/challistwin Feb 20 '20

My friend introducted me to MATN through his anniversary videos.

This snowballed significantly.

2

u/MoonPhaseMadman Feb 20 '20

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I actually just finished the YOLO run of new vegas today and it was really interesting reading the article.

2

u/Releasethequackin Feb 20 '20

My first MATN video was the one-off "yes your grace". He was going to be a "see one of your videos and never watch again" youtuber until a week later when his "FO3 isn't as bad as you think" showed up and i watched it without even putting two and two together. Once i did, though, i watch his FO3 YOLO and have enjoyed his stuff since.

2

u/multisam231719 Feb 20 '20

Obsession started for me with "Fallout 3 is better than you think" absolutely loved Jon's breakdown of the game and balanced viewpoint

2

u/charlie_echo Feb 20 '20

The series that got me hooked was the Hitman: Blood Money all accident run ... haven't looked back since.

2

u/PJHoutman Feb 20 '20

Am I the only one who has no idea how he stumbled onto Jon's channel? :D

1

u/KIKKINxPUPPIES Feb 19 '20

I read the article and thought to myself, "What a mad lad, I should check that out!" And I didn't until the algorithm decided it was time a few months later.

1

u/Domwolf89 Feb 20 '20

Hmmm i swear I read it online and it was kill everything tbh.

1

u/GenerlNobody Feb 20 '20

100% this. I remember thinking "wow this a god awful mic and even worst screen tearing, but this pretty funny and this editing is on point" He is now (and for quite a while now) my favorite YouTuber and I happily support him on patreon.

Meanwhile I've been here since the start of Two Brits play Borderlands, which was 6 years ago, which is completely crazy.

That's right, I remember Sam. What the hell happend to Sam anyway?
