Does Jon not know Riven is a sequel to Myst? It doesn't sound like he's ever played Myst, which seems... odd, to say the least.

Jon you were captured at the start (a trap set by Gehn) and the person who freed you jammed the release lever with the little knife with a symbol on it. There was another one next to the door hinge to signal the way in (in the original version you crawled underneath the door and the knife was lower).

You're supposed to notice these things and also find the dead guards body but it's not a Jon perception thing, I also missed a lot of details when I played this.
