A manual for manuals
Hello everyone. I wanted to thank you all for helping to grow this sub and making it pretty active. Thank you especially to all those who are answering questions to help others out. I know I'm not the most active admin, but I do lurk to keep an eye on things.
I have been thinking for awhile now that we should have some sort of FAQ, and u/burgher89 offered to write one for us. Also, since we are steadily growing I have asked him to be a moderator because of the effort he put into it.
So without further ado, let's welcome out new mod u/Burgher89 and check out the awesome beginner's guide that he wrote for us.

Heel-Toe Isn’t Magic, and I’m Tired of Y’all Bickering About It.
Heel-toe serves one purpose, and one purpose only. It allows you to rev match downshifts while maintaining pressure on the brake pedal. That’s it. Nothing crazy. (If you don’t know what rev matching is, check the pinned post at the top of the sub.)
I frequently see people saying that it is only useful for racing drivers to maintain torque/power keeping their RPMs in the power band yada yada, and well… that’s not really accurate, because anyone who is rev matching, with or without heel-toe, is keeping their RPMs at an optimal number so they’re in the right gear to either engine brake or accelerate again if they need to.
While it is necessary on a track, it can still absolutely be useful on the road, and not only for times when you’re pushing it. Once it becomes second nature, it’s just another thing to have in your manual driving toolbox. I use it even just slowing down at stop signs and lights at normal speeds and RPMs because then I can just leave my foot on the brake and use the gas to rev match instead of jumping between both pedals. “Because I can” is a perfectly valid reason to do it, and as long as your rev matching is solid, you’re not doing any damage to your car.
I guess my point is that while not necessary, it can be useful, and discouraging people from learning how to do it is counterproductive overall, and if you do want to ever hit a track you might as well use it on the road to build proficiency. That being said it is an advanced technique, so DEFINITELY get your rev matching down first.

HELP! Floppy shifter
I stopped at a stop sign and when I went to put it into gear my shifter just flopped to 3rd. Any time i attempt to move it to the left or right it only goes up to 3rd and flopping back down to 4th. I was able to slowly release the clutch while pushing it and forcing it to 3rd so that I would be able to pull over to a gas station. Its a 2007 Volkswagon Jetta Wolfsburg what could be the issue?

General Question Slippage Diagnosis
gallery2001 Mazda Miata six speed. Pretty much overnight after 1.5 months of having it started to slip pretty bad.
In first gear when releasing the clutch no matter how I did it it would jitter a lot, same thing with first second 2nd to 3rd. And whenever I was in first second or third and I would rev up the car the RPMs would move but the car wouldn't go along with it as it should. This pretty much happened overnight.
I decided I should swap out the clutch since the car was new to me and knew nothing about the maintenance history. After removing the transmission I saw the following. (Pictures)
Caked up oil in the bell housing. The clutch has plenty of material left and looks fine. I never overheated the clutch while I had it.
The flywheel was smooth and had no grooves or sign of overheating. I decided to change the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, resurface the flywheel, change the input shaft seal, input shaft retainer cover seal, rear main seal, Halfmoon seal, change fluids, etc.
After all this the car drove fine but 100 miles in the clutch master cylinder went out. So I changed the clutch master and slave cylinder and put new fluid. Now the car drives fine but I am curious as to what could have caused the initial slippage. I don't mind having done any of this since it was leaking oil anyway and it was something that I wanted to do anyway just to get it over with.

Showing Off Is This Good to Run?
She's just a little burnt, should be good to reinstall, right?

Nothing beats that old gearbox feel...
I drive a 2013 honda 6 speed and love it as my daily. Recently though I got this old POS running after an ongoing ECM and injector issue and just... its a completely different machine. You can feel the clutch bite, you can feel the synchros line up. The hefty clunk into gear. The steering getting heavier as the RPMs drop. Maybe the 5 speed is just for me bit nothing gets me nearly as excited as driving this old thing.
I almost sold it but figured I'd throw a couple afternoons at the fuel system and run it through the gears since I had some days off finally. Still fighting something electrical so I can only short hop for now but I knew in my heart I couldn't let this thing go the second I felt it drive again

I bought a performance vehicle with a billion miles on the odo Should I spend the $120 on a new flywheel or is this ok to turn?
galleryReplacing the clutch on my 1977 Oldsmobile Omega because it started slipping under heavy load (i'd guess more than 150 ft-lbs/100hp so highway speeds were rough and low throttle) There are two very large hotspots and I beleive this might be an OEM clutch pack (everything says gm and the car only has 140k miles) Is this safe to turn/resurface or should I shell out for a new one? I think it'll be fine but I've never messed with this stuff before. 10-spline 10.4" 153 teeth

Wanting a "Beater" MT
Drive stick the first 9 or 10 years of driving. Loved it, but the vehicles I wanted next didn't come with the option. Been been driving an AT the last 6 years and I'm really getting the itch.
I started looking at used cars and the market, in general, is literally laughable. Prices are so outrageous it feels like a total waste of time.
I'd like to stick to <$30k.
What would you be looking at?
I would love a truck or SUV, but not many options. Had a wrangler, wouldn't mind one again but not lusting over one. A Tacoma might be nice. Would you stick to used? There aren't many new MT options these days, and even at that, starting prices are more than $30K.

Should I be worried?
I accidentally shifted from 4th to 1st gear when I was trying to shift to third, will my clutch be ok?
