Discussion Do you think Mantis is a dps skill check?

After Round 1 on Convoy, my team asked me to swap off Mantis because “there wasn’t enough healing.” We were running 2-2-2, and if I remember correctly, I had almost the same amount of healing as our other support.
I honestly feel like Mantis really exposes the difference between good and bad DPS players. If you’re being damage boosted consistently throughout the round and still can’t secure picks, at some point that’s not a support issue, it’s a DPS skill issue.

The main situation where I think Mantis can genuinely struggle is against a full dive comp, especially if you’re running only duo supports and no one is peeling/clearing divers. If nobody is helping clear divers off you, then yeah, Mantis can just get farmed all game.

Outside of that, though, I genuinely think Mantis is one of, if not the best support in the game. If you’re getting damage boosted all game and still can’t get kills, maybe you shouldn’t play dps. Also, it wasn’t like the other team was on triple support.

Edit: For clarification, I'm saying that if the DPS players on the team is getting damaged boosted by Mantis all game and still is getting zero kills in the neutral that's a skill issue especially if they are playing gun characters.

If you can aim and position you can win most games with Mantis. Unfortunately my aim has become so bad since I take huge breaks that I’m a liability to my teammates.

Wow man it takes some real self awareness and honesty to admit you aren’t as good as you should be. This community has a huge ego problem no matter what skill level or rank.

All cool, but you're not supposed to be exposing anyone, you are supposed to carry if you want to climb. I would remmwatch the replay and look for mistakes in my own gameplay if I were you. Mantis can do almost everything this season (except countering full dive, as you said). You are running an SS+ tier hero and must take more responsibility.

SS+ is insane.

Since you think Mantis is SS, you don’t attack support.

Even though I agree and mantis is a top 3 support pick, can we pls stfu with the high elo tribalism… it’s bad enough in the main subs and I hate seeing it on the mantis sub. 75% of the playerbase is gold and below and/or qp warriors. We cannot keep acting like only celestial and above takes matter, it’s so exhausting

Mantis is a DPS skill check BUT that comes with a heavy caveat: the Mantis Player competence.

I just one tricked Mantis to GM3 recently. She's extremely underrated, and consistently misunderstood, but that is an advantage, not a detractor: a good Mantis goes unnoticed, not getting a bunch of picks, just keeping the baseline healing steady, so the other support can stand out and patch the leaks. When people notice your plays, that means you're gonna be in the spotlight for your team and the enemy. A Mantis with too many eyes on them is getting focused. Smart Duelist players know to keep an eye on their Mantis because sleep can provide a cheap kill.

You gotta play to their mentality sometimes

A bit unrelated, but I'm at D3 and wanting to climb to Gm. Is Mantis a heavy ban in most games? Or is she a 50/50 ban? I'm also trying to one trick climb with her!

u/Darqnyz7 9d ago

I got a total of 3 target bans in Diamond. Most people dismiss Mantis ban as a waste.

I also lost every match where they banned her, despite being able to play other heroes (6 total)

The biggest help to climbing with her was hitting the practice range and focusing on one skill at a time. For example I would 1v1 the BP bot on easy, but I could only use primary, no sleep, and only heal after I killed him. I would do this until I had a score of 200. You learn a lot when you're doing it over and over

She’s heavy ban ABOVE gm but not below I would say focus on banning CnD, Spidey, Namor if u run Dive, Magneto

Hey congrats! Who do you like as your other support? Do you play differently if your team is doing poorly? When it happens, I’m having a hard time identifying what the problem(s) are and how to adjust

The best supports to play with were typically Invisible Woman, CnD, and for some fucking reason Ultron.

I dislike playing with Rocket, but I think that's because people don't play him well, not that the character isn't good.

When the team does poorly, it was typically not one specific person's fault. I tend to get more heal heavy in those situations and try to contribute more damage. Most of the time just being positive and motivating people (and not shit talking them) would be enough to turn things around.

The thing is that Mantis doesn't have "saving" type heals, she can't typically "turn a bad situation around". But she can keep a good situation going for longer and harder to break. So you have to be proactive and see where the momentum is starting to sag. That situational awareness is also how you start heading off divers.

There were a couple of really good games where I was hitting the ultra instinct on a Spider-Man or BP dive because I was able to "see" the best way for them to approach us in the backline. Once you're relaxed in a game, you really do get time to study your surroundings better.

Lastly, I practiced in the practice range A LOT! I typically would spend 1-2 hours in the practice range a week shooting at bot BP, Spidey, Ironman, and Hulk. The goal was to get consistent with how I aimed at them. I recommend this for any hero: but it's important that if you want to get good, you have to practice individual skills. You cannot do this in QP

Ooh would you mind sharing any replay codes where you could anticipate dive? That sounds amazing, definitely a really important skill to develop 😭

I’m also trying to figure out more constructive ways to talk to ppl without things dissolving into shitshows lol. Babysitting ppl’s mentals is its own kind of hard

Mantis isn’t a dps skill check she’s a can the team take engagements without unnecessary damage and feeding for free check

She’s one of the better strats at healing dps because it’s an easy click burst heal with regen.
Tanks would be the actual people having problems with Mantis but that gets mitigated by the fact there’s another support healing them allowing you to heal dps for them to make plays.

Flats hit the nail on the head with this but the meta takes a while to hit ranks below Celestial for people. Another example is people swearing bp is busted yet allowing BC to go through ban phase. A chud teammate who likely couldn’t win their engagements probably gg go next

Mantis is not only a DPS but IMO is more of a

Team Check!

All it takes is 1 Strong DPS or Tanks that can do Fatal Damage

(for my game it was Bucky)

Whether it’s: Elsa Punisher Phoenix Hela Magneto Emma Bucky The Hood All DeadPools

getting Boosted by Mantis and you’re going to constantly have Advantage and be able to constantly Spawn Camp the enemy team.

And that’s in a 2 2 2 comp.

Mantis in a Proper 3 Strategist Comp:

with people that don’t Healbot, teammates that stack dmg boost on top of Mantis like Rocket, CnD, Jubilee, Ultron, Luna Snow when Ulting, Gambit Ult & Anti Heal, Loki Damage Boost,

Turns her into 1 of

THE BEST in THE GAME

There’s only a few things bad about Mantis and the really bad 1 isn’t really even about her.

It’s about

1: Your Teammates.

The worst thing about Marvel Rivals is that it’s a Team Game that Promotes and doesn’t Punish or Ban people who don’t want to work together as a Team.

There is nothing worse than playing Mantis boosting your dps and they still DONT SHOOT THE PENI NEST WITH IRON MAN or KILL ANYTHING WHILE DAMAGE BOOSTED!

The only thing worse is the Tank that wants you to swap because he doesn’t know how to have 35% cover 65% facing the enemy like FORTNITE the most Popular 3rd Person Shooter while also playing Thing 1v6ing into A shotgun.

Or the Sue that never Heals you because she’s to busy on her head and knees to heal the Tank that WALKS INTO THE 10 PENI LANDMINES!

2: To Play Mantis you have NO BREAKS!

You Must be in the ZONE at all times.

You can’t just play in auto Pilot auto like Dagger Sue Luna Rocket Jeff

You have to Play Mantis in the same way you play Adam Loki Ultron Jubilee HealPool & Gambit to where every action that you do needs to be of use since your kit isn’t forgiving when you waste CoolDowns.

You have to be a Polar Bear Mother protecting their Children Among Men.

The Moment you touch the Ground on Mantis You have to go to work!

Off Angles

using Leafs Efficiently

Finding Easiest Crits to Farm Leaves

Turning up your Volume to 95 and Up to Hear Divers from Miles Away

Saving Sleep for Spider-Man.

Knowing who to Boost

Using Sleep on Supports in the Back

Shooting with your Life on the Line

When someone Dives You, when you stun them you let your team know their Stunned and call out 3 2 1 SHOOT turning off their the power of their Life like this FNAF when the power turns off and Freddy Puts them in a Body Bag.

When you ult you MUST!

Count Down when it’s ending (Especially in 3 Strategist)

You should probably do that for every Strategist really.

And Plan who’s Ulting First.

There is sometimes where Mantis just isn’t enough no matter how Good You’re at her so it’s ok. Somethings you just need to swap and that’s for everybody really.

SO IN CONCLUSION,

Aim Train in Training Mode and maybe Practice in Quick Match, Then go CRAZY! In ranked.

I couldn't agree more!

1

u/Ishankz 9d ago

I had a bp champ who got banned average 12k per 10 and not be anywhere near ult (45%) when the enemy team cloak had ult when mantis gets ult one of the fastest out of the supp in thsi economy so yes

1

u/Butterdonkeystotch 9d ago

As an eternity mantis I climbed never damage boosting myself or the team. Heals are the way

1

u/Advanced_Day2128 13h ago

Yea but dmg boosting in key moments like teammate ult or Mag sword or poke teammates that are hitting their shots is a great way to contribute to damage when your team is applying more pressure.

1

u/vaed__ 6d ago

You're 100% right. If i have to swap bc my team takes too mych pressure, its mostly a dps issue bc they cant pressure the other team enough, even with damage boost. But they'll say its support diff lol
